Rust Rose: Where to Find Roses, Seeds, Clones, Farming & Scrap Value (2026)

Rust farming guide, updated October 29, 2026

The Rose is one of the three wild flowers Facepunch added in the Crafting Update on March 6, 2025, next to the Orchid and the Sunflower. You will not craft anything with it and you cannot eat it, but a rose is free to pick, it hands you a seed every time, and the farm vendors at the Ranch and Large Barn pay scrap for it.

This Rust rose guide covers where wild roses grow, what a rose, Rose Seed and Rose Clone actually are in the game files, how to grow a rose bed, what roses sell for, how they compare with orchids and sunflowers, and the uses people get wrong.

TL;DR Wild roses grow on the forest floor of the temperate (green) biome. Press E on one to get 1 Rose and 1 Rose Seed, no tool needed. Plant the seed in a planter, clone the best plant, and harvest the ripe bloom. The Ranch and Large Barn vendors buy roses for a default 50 scrap per 12 roses (about 4.2 scrap each), which drifts with server demand. A rose stacks to 20, composts for 0.1 fertilizer, never spoils, and is used in no crafting recipe. The current game files also give it a fishing bait value of 0, so it is not bait.

What Is the Rose in Rust?

The Rose is a decorative flower item. In the game files it is rose with item ID 1414245519, an Uncommon item in the Food category with the description “Romantic AF.” It stacks to 20 and despawns 20 minutes after you drop it. Despite the Food category it has no eat option, so it gives no calories or hydration.

Facepunch first showed the flowers in February 2025 and shipped them on March 6, 2025 in the Crafting Update, the same patch that added the Cooking Workbench, bees and the Chicken Coop. Three flowers came out together: the Rose, the Orchid and the Sunflower. A June 2025 patch then let the farm vendors buy them in quantities greater than 1, which is what turned flowers into a small scrap source.

Where to Find Roses in Rust

Where to find roses in Rust: an in-game screenshot of a wild red rose growing under birch trees in a temperate forest, with cards showing 1 rose and 1 Rose Seed per pick and that mushrooms and hemp share the same ground
Wild roses grow on the temperate forest floor. Every pick also gives a seed.

Wild roses spawn as a collectable (rose-collectable) in the temperate biome, the green part of the map. They sit on the forest floor and in grassy clearings under trees, the same kind of ground that rolls wild hemp and mushrooms. You will not see them in the desert, the snow or the jungle. Our Rust biomes guide shows where the temperate band sits on a normal procedural map.

  1. Head into a temperate forest. Birch and oak woods between the beach and the snow line are the best ground.
  2. Look low. A wild rose is a single knee-high stem with one red bloom. It stands out against ferns and grass.
  3. Press E. No tool is needed. You get 1 Rose and 1 Rose Seed.
  4. Keep the seed. One seed is all you need to start a rose bed, and clones do the rest.
Tip: Wild roses respawn over time like hemp and mushrooms, so a forest you cleared on wipe day will have new ones later. Grab them on your runs to monuments instead of making a separate trip.

Rose Seed vs Rose Clone

Rose Seed vs Rose Clone in Rust: the Rose Seed stacks to 50, despawns in 5 minutes and has random genes, the Rose stacks to 20 and composts for 0.1, the Rose Clone stacks to 50, keeps its genes and is taken from a mature plant
Seeds come from wild roses. Clones come from your own plants and keep their genes.

Both plant a rose, and both stack to 50. The difference is the genes. A Rose Seed rolls random genes when it grows, just like a seed from wild hemp. A Rose Clone is a cutting from one of your own rose plants and keeps that plant’s exact genes. The game describes the seed as “Rose seeds can be found when picking wild Roses” and the clone as “A clipping of a rose plant”.

So the plan is always the same: plant seeds, find the plant with the best genes, then clone it and fill your planters with copies. Our Rust farming guide explains genes, crossbreeding and cloning in full. Roses only crossbreed with other roses, not with berries or hemp.

How to Grow Roses

Rust rose growth stages using the real in-game rose models: seedling, sapling where the clone menu opens, mature where you clone it, ripe with a red bloom ready to harvest, and dying
The real rose models at each stage, from the game’s own prefabs.

A rose grows exactly like every other crop. It goes from seedling to sapling to mature, blooms when it is ripe, and then starts dying. The four conditions are the same too: light, water, ground condition and temperature.

  1. Pick a planter. A Large Planter Box holds 9 plants, a Small one 3, and a Single Plant Pot holds 1, which makes a nice single rose on a shelf. See our Rust planter guide for the costs.
  2. Give it light. Sunlight or ceiling lights are the only light sources that count.
  3. Water it. A sprinkler on a water pump or a barrel keeps the planter wet without you watering by hand.
  4. Feed the soil. About 1 fertilizer per plant per grow cycle keeps ground condition high.
  5. Clone at Mature, harvest at Ripe. Hold E on the plant to take clones or harvest the bloom.

Roses do not spoil, so you can leave a ripe rose standing as decoration for the whole Ripe phase, or harvest and bank the roses in a box until you go to sell them. Higher yield genes (Y) give more roses per harvest, and faster growth genes (G) shorten the wait.

How Much Do Roses Sell For in Rust?

Rust flower prices at the Ranch and Large Barn vendors: Orchid about 6 scrap each, Rose 50 scrap per 12 or about 4.2 scrap each, Sunflower about 3 scrap each, next to a shot of farm animals at a ranch
Default vendor prices before dynamic pricing moves them.

The farm vendors at the Ranch and the Large Barn buy flowers. Both are safe zones, so you can walk in with a bag of roses without getting shot. The default rose trade is 50 scrap for 12 roses. NPC prices have been dynamic since July 2024, so the price you see goes up and down a bit with how many players sell the same item.

Roses soldTradesScrap at default price
12150
242100
484200
968400
120 (6 full stacks)10500

That is our own math from the default trade, so treat it as a ceiling on a busy server and a fair guide on a quiet one. It is not a main scrap source, but a rose bed that you water once and visit on the way to the Ranch is scrap for almost no effort. For bigger, faster scrap, see our Rust scrap guide.

Rose vs Orchid vs Sunflower

Rose vs Orchid vs Sunflower in Rust: the orchid sells for about 6 scrap each, the rose about 4.2, the sunflower about 3, all stack to 20 and compost for 0.1, with their in-game descriptions Smells nice, Romantic AF and Very tall
Three flowers with the same stats, apart from the price.
FlowerItem IDDescriptionDefault priceScrap eachStackCompost
Orchid734320711Smells nice.6 scrap per 16200.1
Rose1414245519Romantic AF.50 scrap per 12~4.2200.1
Sunflower-611118083Very tall.3 scrap per 13200.1

All three flowers come from wild plants, give a seed when picked and grow in the same planters. The Orchid pays the most per flower, so if you only have room for one flower bed and you want scrap, plant orchids. Roses are the middle pick and look the best in a base. Sunflowers pay the least but are the tallest plant you can grow.

What Are Roses Used For in Rust?

What roses are used for in Rust, checked against the game files: yes to selling at the Ranch and Barn, yes to composting at 0.1 fertilizer each, yes to decorating with a ripe plant that never spoils, and no to fishing bait, eating or crafting, with 0 of 662 recipes using a rose
We checked every use against the current game files.

We checked the rose against the current game files (all 1,307 items and 662 crafting blueprints). Here is what it does and does not do:

  • Sell it. The Ranch and Large Barn vendors buy roses, 50 scrap per 12 by default.
  • Compost it. Each rose gives 0.1 fertilizer in a Composter, so 10 roses make 1 fertilizer. One piece of horse dung is worth 100 roses, so only compost roses you cannot sell.
  • Decorate with it. A ripe rose in a Single Plant Pot or a planter by the door is the whole point of the flower for a lot of players.
  • Not a crafting ingredient. None of the 662 crafting blueprints uses a rose, an orchid or a sunflower. Use our crafting calculator to check any recipe.
  • Not food. It is in the Food category but has no eat option and no calories.
  • Not fishing bait. Some item sites still list the flowers with a bait value of 1. The current game files give the rose, orchid and sunflower a bait value of 0. Berries, corn, potatoes, worms and grubs are the plant and bug baits that count. See our Rust fishing guide for real bait.

Rose Farming Tips

Rust rose farming tips: pick every wild rose for a free seed, clone the plant with the best genes such as GGYYYY, and sell roses in batches of 12 for 50 scrap, next to an in-game shot of a planter bed
Small habits that turn a flower bed into steady scrap.
  • Pick every wild rose you pass. It costs one key press and gives a free seed.
  • Clone the winner. Plant a few seeds, keep the one with the most G and Y genes and clone it. GGYYYY is a common target, the same as for other crops.
  • Sell in batches of 12. The vendor trades in blocks of 12, so stack your roses in twelves before the trip.
  • Pair the trip with the farm vendors. The Ranch and Large Barn also sell horses and farm supplies, so sell roses on the same run. Our livestock guide covers what else they trade.
  • Pick orchids if you only want scrap. They pay more per flower than roses.
  • Plan around the wipe. Planters, genes and roses all go on the force wipe. Check the Rust force wipe countdown so you sell your stock before the map resets.
