Rust is on Xbox and PlayStation as Rust Console Edition, a separate version of the game made by Double Eleven with Facepunch. In 2026 you can buy and play it on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The PS4 and Xbox One versions are gone, and Rust is not on Game Pass or in the PS Plus games catalog, so you have to buy it.
This guide answers the buying questions: which consoles have Rust, what each edition costs on the PlayStation Store and the Microsoft Store, what Game Pass and PS Plus actually give you, where to buy it safely, and how to get the best price. All prices and store details were checked against the PlayStation and Xbox store listings and Double Eleven’s own pages in October 2026. For updates, wipes and servers, see our Rust Console Edition hub.

Which Platforms Is Rust On?
| Platform | Can you play Rust? | Version and price |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | Yes | Rust Console Edition, from $49.99 |
| Xbox Series X|S | Yes | Rust Console Edition X|S, from $49.99 |
| PS4 | No | Removed from sale May 2025, servers closed October 30, 2025 |
| Xbox One | No | Servers closed October 30, 2025 |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Only if you own it | Stream your own copy with Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate |
| PC (Windows, Mac) | Yes | Rust on Steam, $39.99, a separate game with separate servers |
| Nintendo Switch | No | No version announced |
| Mobile | Not yet | Rust Mobile by Tencent is in closed beta with no global release date |
Console and PC are two different games that never share servers. PS5 and Xbox players can play together, but not with Steam players. Our Rust crossplay guide covers every platform pair.
Is Rust on Xbox?
Yes. Rust is on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S as Rust Console Edition X|S, the native new-gen version that launched on June 26, 2025. It replaced the old Xbox One version, which ran on Series consoles through backward compatibility from May 2021.
- Xbox One: no longer playable. The Xbox One servers shut down on October 30, 2025.
- Upgrade: anyone who owned Rust Console Edition on Xbox One got the Series X|S version free, with a one-to-one edition match (Deluxe owners got Deluxe, Ultimate owners got Ultimate). In the Microsoft Store, the version with “X|S” in the name is the one to own.
- Online: Rust is online only, and playing it on an Xbox console needs Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate (Essential replaced Game Pass Core).
Is Rust on PS4 and PS5?
Rust is on PS5 as a native version that also launched on June 26, 2025. Rust is no longer on PS4: the PS4 version was removed from sale on May 29, 2025 and its servers closed on October 30, 2025.
- Upgrade: PS4 owners could claim the PS5 version for free from June 26, 2025, and extras from Deluxe and Ultimate were added to the account automatically. One catch from Sony’s listing: a PS4 disc owner using a PS5 Digital Edition (no disc drive) can’t get the free PS5 version.
- Online: you need a PS Plus subscription (Essential is enough) to play Rust online on PS5.
- Download size: about 18 GB on PS5, before updates.
Is Rust on Game Pass?
No, Rust is not on Game Pass, on Xbox or on PC, and it never has been. Facepunch and Double Eleven have not announced any plan to add it. The confusion comes from the Xbox store listing, which says “Cloud playable with Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate. Game purchase required.” That means:
- Game Pass catalog: Rust is not included at any tier.
- Xbox Cloud Gaming: if you buy Rust Console Edition, a Game Pass membership lets you stream your copy to a TV, PC, tablet or phone without downloading it.
- Online play: on an Xbox console you need Game Pass Essential or higher just to join a server, even though you paid for the game.
- PC Game Pass: PC Rust is only sold on Steam, so it is not on PC Game Pass or the Microsoft Store for PC.
The same goes for PlayStation: Rust is not in the PS Plus Extra games catalog, and PS Plus is only needed for online play.
How Much Is Rust on Xbox and PS5?
Rust Console Edition costs the same on the PlayStation Store and the Microsoft Store in the US. UK prices start at £39.99, and other regions vary.
| Edition | US price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $49.99 | The full game, Public Test Branch access, a Press Start garage door skin (red) |
| Deluxe | $59.99 | The game, Tech Noir skin set, Press Start garage door skin, 1,100 Rust Coins, Public Test Branch access |
| Ultimate | $84.99 | The game, Orion’s Fury L96 skin, Tech Noir skin set, Press Start garage door skin, 4,600 Rust Coins, Public Test Branch access |
Every edition is the same game; the extras are cosmetic. Since September 3, 2026, the Public Test Branch is open to every owner, so the Standard edition gets early test builds like Overground Trains too. That was Deluxe and Ultimate only before.
Rust Coins are the console currency for the in-game skin store and are sold separately: 500 for $4.99, 1,100 for $9.99 and 4,600 for $34.99. Single skin packs on the stores mostly cost between about $4 and $18. If you want the 4,600 coins anyway, Ultimate is the better deal ($35 more than Standard for the coins plus extra skins). If you don’t care about skins, Standard is all you need. PC players get skins a different way; see our Rust skins guide and the PC Item Store.
Where to Buy Rust for Xbox and PS5
- PlayStation Store: search “Rust Console Edition” on your PS5 or on the PlayStation website and pick the PS5 version.
- Microsoft Store: on your Xbox, in the Xbox app or on xbox.com, buy Rust Console Edition X|S. Avoid the old listing without “X|S”, which is the Xbox One version.
- Gift cards: PlayStation and Xbox gift cards from big retailers work for the game and for Rust Coins, which is handy if you don’t want a card on your console account.
- Double Eleven’s site: the official Rust Console Edition buy page compares the editions and links to both stores.
- Key resellers: sites that sell codes can be cheaper, but check the region, the platform (PS5 or Series X|S) and the edition before you pay, and stick to authorised sellers.
When Is Rust on Sale on Console?
Rust Console Edition goes on sale several times a year on both stores, usually in the big seasonal sales and around major updates. Price trackers show the Xbox Series X|S Standard edition hit its lowest price of $24.99 (50% off) on July 16, 2026, and the PS5 version dropped to about $31 in May 2026. There was no sale running when we checked in October 2026.
If you aren’t in a hurry, add Rust to your wishlist on the PlayStation Store or Xbox so the store tells you when it drops. Monthly official servers wipe on the last Thursday of the month, so buying just before that gives you a fresh start; see our Rust console wipe schedule for every date and time.
Should You Buy Rust on Console or PC?
| Question | Console (PS5, Xbox) | PC (Steam) |
|---|---|---|
| Base price | $49.99 | $39.99 |
| Extra subscription to play online | Yes, PS Plus or Game Pass Essential | No |
| New content | Months after PC | First, every month |
| Players | Smaller, PS5 and Xbox together | Much bigger, see the Rust player count |
| Mods and modded servers | No | Yes |
| Skins | Rust Coins store, DLC packs | Steam Workshop, Item Store, Twitch drops |
| Best for | Playing on a TV with a controller | The full, newest game and the most servers |
Buy on the platform your friends play on, because console and PC can’t meet. If you have a decent PC, Steam is cheaper, gets content first and has many more servers. If you want to play on the couch with a controller, the console version is built for it. PC Rust has supported controllers too since November 5, 2026 (see our Rust controller support guide), but console is still the only way to play with PlayStation and Xbox friends. Rust Console Buying Tips
- Wait for a sale. Half price has happened; full price is $49.99.
- Standard is enough. Every edition plays the same, and all of them get the test branch now.
- Buy the right version. PS5 on PlayStation, “Rust Console Edition X|S” on Xbox.
- Count the subscription. PS Plus or Game Pass Essential is an extra monthly cost for online play.
- Coins stay on one platform. Rust Coins and skins never move between PlayStation, Xbox and PC.
- Check where your friends play. If they’re on Steam, buy PC Rust instead.
