Is Rust Cross-Platform? Rust Crossplay on PC, PS5, Xbox & Mac (2026)

Rust platform guide, October 2026

Is Rust cross-platform? Only partly. Rust on PC and Rust Console Edition are two separate games, so a Steam player can’t join a friend on PlayStation or Xbox, and nothing you own carries between them. Inside each version it is a different story: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players share crossplay servers, and Windows and Mac players on Steam play on the same servers as each other.

This guide covers Rust crossplay for every platform in 2026: PC and console, PS5 and Xbox, Mac, Steam Deck and Linux, cloud streaming with GeForce NOW, and what happens to your progress, skins and Rust Coins when you switch. Everything here was checked against Facepunch, Double Eleven and platform-store information in October 2026.

TL;DR No, Rust is not crossplay between PC and console. Rust (PC) is made by Facepunch and sold on Steam; Rust Console Edition is a separate port by Double Eleven. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S do crossplay with each other on Console Edition, and Windows and Mac players share the same Steam servers. There is no cross-progression: accounts, skins and DLC stay on the version you bought. Steam Deck and Linux have no official support because of Easy Anti-Cheat, but since July 2026 you can stream your Steam copy through GeForce NOW and join normal PC servers from a Steam Deck, Chromebook or phone.

Is Rust Crossplay? The Short Answer

Rust has partial crossplay. Which players you can meet depends on which version of Rust you own, not on the device you hold:

  • PC and console: no. Steam players and PlayStation or Xbox players can never be on the same server.
  • PlayStation and Xbox: yes. Rust Console Edition puts PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players on shared crossplay servers.
  • Windows and Mac: yes. Both run the same Steam game and connect to the same PC servers.
  • Cross-progression: no. Your account, skins, DLC and Rust Coins do not move between PC and console.

If you only take one thing away: everyone in your group has to own the same version. That’s the whole rule.

Rust Versions and Platforms in 2026

Rust versions and platforms: Rust PC by Facepunch on Steam runs on Windows and macOS, not Linux or Steam Deck; Rust Console Edition by Double Eleven runs on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, PS4 and Xbox One closed; phones only by streaming, no Nintendo Switch version, GeForce NOW streams the PC game
Two games share the Rust name.

There are two Rust games on sale today, and they don’t talk to each other:

Rust Console Edition first came out on May 21, 2021 for PS4 and Xbox One. Native PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions launched in June 2025 with a free upgrade for old-gen owners, and the PS4 and Xbox One servers shut down on October 30, 2025. Our Rust release date guide has the full timeline.

There is no Rust on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, and no Rust you can install on a phone or tablet. The only way to play on those devices is to stream the PC game, which we cover in the GeForce NOW section below.

Is Rust Crossplay Between PC and Console?

No. Rust is not crossplay between PC and PS5, PC and Xbox, or PC and any console, and there is no official plan to change that. A Steam player can’t see console servers in the browser, and a console player can’t see PC servers.

Why Rust PC and console can't crossplay: separate developers Facepunch and Double Eleven, console gets content later, mouse versus controller aim balance, no Oxide or Carbon mods on console, Easy Anti-Cheat on PC only, separate Steam and PlayStation and Xbox stores
Different code, different updates, different stores.

The reasons are practical rather than political:

  • Different codebases. Facepunch builds PC Rust. Console Edition is a separate port maintained by Double Eleven, so the two games aren’t the same build and can’t share a server.
  • Different update schedules. Console gets PC content months later. The tech tree reached console almost a year after PC, and items like the Chandelier and the Tugboat arrived on console on their own dates.
  • Mouse against controller. PC Rust’s recoil and aim are tuned for a mouse. Putting controller players on a PC server would hand mouse players a huge edge.
  • Mods and admin tools. PC servers run Oxide and Carbon plugins and the F1 console; console servers do neither. See our Rust server mods guide and admin commands guide.
  • Separate anti-cheat and stores. PC uses Easy Anti-Cheat and the Steam store; console uses Sony and Microsoft’s systems and stores.

Is Rust Crossplay Between PS5 and Xbox?

Yes. Rust Console Edition supports crossplay between PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Official console servers mix PlayStation and Xbox players, so you can join the same server, group up and build together with a friend on the other console.

Rust Console Edition crossplay: official servers mix PS5 and Xbox players, community hosts can lock a server to PlayStation or Xbox only, team up with friends in game, in-game proximity voice, progress stays on each console, console updates come after PC
PlayStation and Xbox meet on the same console servers.
  • Crossplay servers. Most servers are open to both PlayStation and Xbox players.
  • Platform-locked servers. Community server hosts choose between Xbox only, PlayStation only or crossplay. A server locked to one platform is hidden from players on the other one, so if you can’t find your friend’s server, that setting is the usual reason.
  • Teams and voice. Once you’re on the same server you team up in game, and in-game proximity voice works across both consoles.
  • Old consoles. PS4 and Xbox One are no longer supported. Their servers closed on October 30, 2025, so everyone needs the PS5 or Xbox Series version.
Console tip Console Edition runs behind PC on content. If a guide on this site mentions an item or monument you can’t find on console, check the date it reached PC. For example, the Military Tunnels only came back to console in late 2025.

Does Rust Have Cross-Progression?

No. Double Eleven has said that cross-platform progress transfer is not an option in Rust Console Edition, and nothing on PC carries to console either. Rust wipes servers regularly anyway, so the progress you’d lose is mostly what you own outside a wipe:

Rust cross-progression and skins: PC to console moves no account, no skins or DLC and no hours; PS5 to Xbox gives crossplay but no shared account, skins or Rust Coins; PS4 and Xbox One owners got a free upgrade in 2025, PlayStation Rust Coins were kept, and old servers closed
You can play together, but your stuff stays put.

On PC, skins live in your Steam inventory and DLC is tied to your Steam account, so they follow you to any PC or Mac you log into. Our Rust item store guide and inventory value guide cover what those skins are worth.

Can You Play Rust on Mac?

Rust on Mac, Steam Deck and cloud: Mac Steam players join PC servers on an Apple M1 or newer with macOS 12 Monterey or later; Steam Deck and Linux can't join official servers because Proton is blocked by Easy Anti-Cheat; GeForce NOW since July 2026 joins PC servers with a Steam copy on a Steam Deck or phone
Mac yes, Steam Deck only through the cloud.

Yes. Rust has a macOS version on Steam, and Mac players are on the same servers as Windows players. When you buy Rust on Steam you get both, so you can switch between a Windows PC and a Mac with the same account, skins and DLC.

Steam lists macOS 12 Monterey and an Apple M1 chip as the minimum, with an M1 Pro, Max or Ultra and 16 GB of RAM recommended. Older Intel Macs struggle to run the current game. Rust is a demanding game on any Mac, so lower your settings first; our best settings guide helps.

Secure servers Since March 2026 some servers carry a Secure tag and require TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, and Facepunch has been switching more official servers over (six more on October 1, 2026). Those checks are built around Windows PCs, so Mac players should expect Secure servers to turn them away and pick an untagged server instead.

Can You Play Rust on Steam Deck or Linux?

Not natively. Facepunch stopped shipping the Linux version of Rust in September 2019 and refunded Linux players. Rust uses Easy Anti-Cheat, and Facepunch has never turned on EAC’s Proton support, so a Steam Deck or Linux PC can’t join official servers or most community servers. Facepunch’s COO Alistair McFarlane has repeated that there are no plans to support Proton or Linux, because when Linux was supported it attracted more cheaters than real players. The same applies to Valve’s new Steam Machine.

You can still launch Rust through Proton with anti-cheat off, but that only gets you onto the few servers that don’t use EAC. For real play on a Steam Deck, stream it instead.

Rust on GeForce NOW

Since July 2026 Rust is playable on NVIDIA GeForce NOW. You stream the PC version from NVIDIA’s servers using the copy you own on Steam, so you join the normal PC servers with Windows and Mac players. GeForce NOW runs on a Steam Deck, Chromebook, phone, tablet, smart TV and low-end laptops, which makes it the only legitimate way to play PC Rust on those devices.

  • You still need to own Rust on Steam. GeForce NOW doesn’t sell the game.
  • It is still PC Rust. Streaming doesn’t give you crossplay with console players.
  • Ping matters twice. Pick a server close to your GeForce NOW region; our Rust servers list is sorted by region.

How to Play Rust With Friends on Other Platforms

Playing Rust with friends on other platforms: if your group is split between PC and console pick one version, a console friend without a PC can try GeForce NOW, a PS5 and Xbox group picks a crossplay server, Mac and Windows already crossplay, Steam Deck streams via the cloud, and teammates share a sleeping bag to spawn together
Everyone in the group needs the same version of Rust.
  1. Agree on one version. If half your group is on PC and half on console, someone has to buy the other version. There is no workaround.
  2. Console group: pick a crossplay server, not one locked to PlayStation or Xbox, and team up in game.
  3. PC group with a friend who has no gaming PC: they can buy Rust on Steam and play it through GeForce NOW on almost anything.
  4. Spawn together. Put down a sleeping bag and assign it to your teammate so you start the wipe in the same place.
  5. Time the wipe. Start on a fresh map so nobody joins late; check when the next Rust force wipe is.
New to PC Rust? PC players get a few extras console doesn’t have: crosshair codes, F1 console commands, aim training servers and Twitch drops that land in your Steam inventory.

Rust Crossplay FAQ

Is Rust cross-platform between PC and console?

No. Rust on PC (Steam) and Rust Console Edition (PS5 and Xbox Series X|S) are separate games with separate servers, so PC and console players can’t play together.

Can PS5 and Xbox play Rust together?

Yes. Rust Console Edition has crossplay between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Most servers mix both, but a community host can lock a server to one platform, which hides it from the other.

Does Rust have cross-progression?

No. Accounts, skins, DLC and Rust Coins do not transfer between PC and console, or between PlayStation and Xbox. Windows and Mac share everything because both use the same Steam account.

Can Mac and PC play Rust together?

Yes. Mac players run the same Steam version of Rust and join the same servers as Windows players. Steam lists macOS 12 Monterey and an Apple M1 chip as the minimum.

Can you play Rust on Steam Deck?

Not natively. Rust uses Easy Anti-Cheat without Proton support, so the Steam Deck can’t join official servers, and Facepunch says it has no plans to change that. You can play it on a Steam Deck by streaming your Steam copy through GeForce NOW.

Is Rust on GeForce NOW?

Yes. Rust has been on GeForce NOW since July 2026. You need to own Rust on Steam, and you play on the normal PC servers.

Is Rust on Nintendo Switch or mobile?

No. There is no Rust for Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, phones or tablets. On a phone or tablet you can only stream the PC version through GeForce NOW.

Will Rust ever get PC and console crossplay?

Nothing has been announced. The two versions are built by different studios on different update schedules, and PC’s mouse aim would unbalance console servers, so PC and console crossplay is unlikely.

Does Rust Console Edition still work on PS4 and Xbox One?

No. Native PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions launched in June 2025 with a free upgrade for old-gen owners, and the PS4 and Xbox One servers closed on October 30, 2025.
