Wallpaper is how you make a Rust base look like a home instead of a concrete box. With one cheap tool and a stack of cloth you can cover the walls, floors and ceilings of your base in vintage patterns, carpets, tiles and, if you own the packs, dozens of extra styles.
This Wallpaper Rust guide covers how to craft the Wallpaper Tool, how to place and change wallpaper, how much cloth a room costs, the free styles every player gets, the paid wallpaper packs, and what wallpaper does (and does not do) when your base gets raided.
What Is Wallpaper in Rust?
Wallpaper is a decorative covering you place on your building blocks. It first arrived with the Time to Kill update in September 2024, when it could only go on walls and came as a deployable item. On July 3, 2025 Facepunch turned it into the Wallpaper Tool: it now works like a Building Plan, takes cloth straight from your inventory each time you place a tile, and covers walls, floors and ceilings (the ceiling side being the underside of a floor or roof).
The in-game description sums it up: “A nice touch of style – until the next raid, at least.” It changes how your base looks and nothing else. It is a nice way to spend spare cloth once your base is safe, and it pairs well with other decor like a rug, a sofa or a ceiling light.

How to Use Wallpaper in Rust
- Craft the Wallpaper Tool. It costs 10 cloth and needs no workbench, so you can make it from your inventory on day one.
- Equip it on your hotbar and stand inside a base where you have building privilege from the Tool Cupboard.
- Look at a wall, floor or ceiling and right click. This opens the style menu. Wall, floor and ceiling styles are separate sets, so the menu shows the ones for the surface you are looking at.
- Left click to place. Each tile takes 10 cloth from your inventory. Keep a stack of cloth on you while you decorate.
To change a style, just place a different one on top of the old paper. Wallpaper can also be reskinned in a Repair Bench before placing, or repainted where it hangs with a Spray Can. To remove it, use a Hammer while you have building privilege, the same way you pick up other deployables.
Free Wallpaper Styles
You do not need to buy anything to use wallpaper. Every player has these free styles:
| Surface | Free styles | Added |
|---|---|---|
| Walls | Vintage Blue (default), Vintage Red, Vintage Green, Vintage Yellow | September 2024 |
| Floors | Tan carpet (default), burgundy carpet, blue vintage tiles, yellow vintage tiles | July 2025 |
| Ceilings | 4 plain default styles | July 2025 |
Floor wallpaper goes on floors and foundations, and ceiling wallpaper goes on the underside of floors and roofs. A wall style cannot be put on a floor, and the other way round.
How Much Cloth Does Wallpaper Cost?
Wallpaper is cheap per tile but adds up across a whole base. Each wall, floor or ceiling tile costs 10 cloth:
| What you cover | Tiles | Cloth |
|---|---|---|
| Wallpaper Tool (once) | – | 10 |
| One wall, floor or ceiling | 1 | 10 |
| 1×1 room, inside walls, floor and ceiling | 6 | 60 |
| 2×2 room, inside walls, floors and ceilings | 16 | 160 |
| 2×2 base, two floors, all inside surfaces | 32 | 320 |
Cloth comes from picking hemp (10 per wild plant), killing animals, and recycling items like tarps, which give 60 cloth each. Our Rust cloth guide covers the fastest ways to farm it.
Rust Wallpaper Packs (DLC)
Extra styles come from paid packs in the Rust item store. Once you own a pack, its styles show up in the Wallpaper Tool menu and are tied to your Steam account, so they work on every server.
| Pack | Price | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Wallpaper Starter Pack | $12.99 | 22 wall styles (September 2024, Time to Kill update) |
| Floor & Ceiling Wallpaper Pack | $12.99 | 34 floor and ceiling styles such as parquet, marble tiles, tatami mats, subway tiles and metal treadplate (July 2025) |
| Glowing Wallpaper Pack | $12.99 | Glowing wall, floor and ceiling styles that light up a dark base |
Prices are the Steam store prices in USD and can change during sales. For the rest of the cosmetics in the game, see our Rust skins guide.
Does Wallpaper Protect Your Base?
No. Wallpaper adds no health and no protection to the wall, floor or ceiling behind it. Raiders still need the same explosives as before, and the paper itself breaks after about 3 rifle rounds. If you want a tougher base, upgrade the building grade instead: our Rust building guide and armored wall guide cover what each tier costs to raid.
There is one placement rule to know. Wallpaper can go on both the soft side and the hard side of a wall, but hard side wallpaper must face the inside of your base and be closed off. Any hard side wallpaper that is exposed to the outside gets removed on the next decay tick. So you cannot paper the outside of your base to change how it looks from the street.
Wallpaper Tips
- Spend spare cloth only. Early in a wipe, cloth goes into armor, bandages and sleeping bags. Wallpaper can wait until those are covered.
- Paper the inside only. Exposed hard side paper is wiped at the next decay tick, so it is wasted cloth.
- Start with the rooms you use. Your main loot and crafting room gets the most screen time. Halls and honeycomb can stay bare.
- Mix it with decor. Floor wallpaper, a rug and a couple of lights make even a small base feel lived in.
- Swap styles freely. You can place a new style over an old one at any time, so experiment.
