Rug Rust: Cost, Comfort, Bear Skin Rug & Placement (2026)

Rust base building guide, 2026

The rug is one of the cheapest things you can put in a Rust base, and one of the few decorations that actually does something. Stand on it or next to it and you get comfort, which makes your health come back faster and helps you warm up. There are two of them: the plain cloth Rug and the Bear Skin Rug made from leather.

This rug Rust guide covers what each rug costs, how to get the blueprint, how much comfort they give, where you can place them, how much health they have, how to get rid of one, and which rug is worth crafting.

TL;DR The Rug costs 25 cloth and the Bear Skin Rug costs 20 leather. Neither needs a workbench, both have 100 HP, and both research for 15 scrap. They go on floors, walls and ceilings. The cloth rug gives about 25% comfort, and the bear skin rug gives a lot more, up to full comfort when you stand close. Comfort does not stack, so one good rug per room is all you need. A single molotov or a few seconds with a hatchet destroys either one.

Rug Cost in Rust

Both rugs craft straight from your inventory, so you can make one on day one without a workbench.

Cloth comes from hemp plants and from skinning animals. Leather only comes from skinning animals, and bears give the most of it, which is where the bear skin rug gets its name.

Rug Blueprint

Rust rug blueprint: research a rug at a research table for 15 scrap, or unlock it on the Workbench 1 tech tree for a 15 scrap node plus the nodes before it
Two ways to learn either rug.
  • Research table: put a rug and 15 scrap into a research table. The rug is used up.
  • Workbench 1 tech tree: each rug is a 15 scrap node on the Workbench 1 tree, but you have to unlock the nodes in front of it first, so the full path costs a lot more than the research table.

The Rug and the Bear Skin Rug are separate blueprints, so learning one does not unlock the other.

Rug Comfort: What It Does

Comfort shows up as a status on the right of your screen when you are near a comfort source. The more comfort you have, the faster your health regenerates, and it also helps you warm up when you are cold.

Rust rug comfort: the cloth rug gives about 25 percent comfort nearby, the bear skin rug gives much more up to full comfort, and comfort does not stack so only your best source counts
Comfort from rugs, and why one is enough.
  • Rug: about 25% comfort when you stand on it or right next to it.
  • Bear Skin Rug: much stronger, and guides list it as able to fill your comfort all the way when you stand close.
  • No stacking: comfort only uses your best source, so two rugs side by side do not give more than one. A lit campfire, a chair or a sofa also give comfort.
Tip: Health only regenerates when you are fed, watered, warm, not bleeding and not hit in the last few seconds, so a rug works best when you have eaten and had a drink.

Where You Can Place a Rug

Where to place a rug in Rust: on floors, on walls, on ceilings, and you need building rights from the tool cupboard to place one inside a base
Rugs fit on floors, walls and ceilings.

Both rugs can go on any flat building surface: floors, walls and ceilings. A bear skin rug on a wall looks like a trophy, and a rug on the ceiling fills an empty roof. Inside someone’s building range you need to be authorised on the tool cupboard to place one.

Rugs are pure decoration. They do not block bullets, doors, ladders or players, and they do not add to your upkeep.

How to Destroy a Rug

How to destroy a rug in Rust: 1 molotov, about 7 seconds with a hatchet, about 4 seconds with a salvaged hammer, 2 F1 grenades, 2 beancans or 1 satchel charge, the same for both rugs
100 HP, and rugs burn.
ToolAmountNote
Molotov Cocktail1Cheapest, no sulfur
Fire arrows3From a hunting bow
Hatchet1About 7 seconds of hits
Salvaged Hammer1About 4 seconds of hits
F1 Grenade2120 sulfur
Beancan Grenade2240 sulfur
Satchel Charge1480 sulfur, overkill

Nobody raids a base for its rugs, but these numbers matter if you want to clear one off a ceiling or a raider sets your base on fire. Both rugs share the same 100 HP, so the numbers are the same for each.

Rug vs Bear Skin Rug

Rug vs Bear Skin Rug in Rust: 25 cloth vs 20 leather, both no workbench, 100 HP and 15 scrap to research, about 25 percent comfort vs up to 100 percent, early wipe vs main base
Same health and blueprint cost, different comfort.

The cloth rug is fine for an early wipe starter base when cloth is easy and leather is not. Once you are killing animals, the bear skin rug is the better pick: it costs a little less material, has the same health, and gives far more comfort. Put it where you spend the most time.

Rug Skins

The plain Rug has a large number of skins from the Steam Workshop and the in game store, from patterned carpets to themed designs, so it is an easy way to make a base look lived in. See the Rust skins guide and the Rust Item Store guide for how skins and the weekly store work.

Rust Rug Tips

Rust rug tips: put a bear rug by the tool cupboard, skin bears for leather, put a rug by your sleeping bag, keep fire away, chairs give comfort too, and rugs have many skins
Small item, handy perks.
  1. Bear rug by the TC. You spend a lot of time sorting loot and paying upkeep, so heal while you do it.
  2. Skin bears. One bear gives plenty of leather for a bear skin rug.
  3. Rug at the bag. Put one next to the sleeping bag or bed you respawn on in your base, so you heal faster after a death.
  4. Keep fire away. Rugs burn, so do not put them where a raider’s molotov can reach them easily.
  5. Chairs work too. Sitting in a chair also gives comfort if you have no rug yet.
  6. Use a skin. Rugs are a cheap way to show off a skin you own.
