The Power Plant in Rust used to be a quiet loot run. You solved a keycard puzzle, grabbed a red card, and left. After the Power Trip update on 6 August 2026, the Power Plant rust players once ignored became the single most important monument on the map, because it now powers the entire server.
Feed it enough Heavy Fuses and a map wide electrical grid switches on. Roadside poles carry power you can wire straight into your base. Gas station car lifts, supermarket freezers, water stations, Airfield airdrops, Dome crude oil pumps and a brand new satellite crash event all come online. And the recyclers, every recycler on the server, run better or worse depending on whether the plant is lit. One monument, and it changes how the whole wipe plays.
This guide covers everything: the classic loot puzzle and which keycards you need, how Heavy Fuses work, all four power levels and what each one unlocks, how to wire the poles into your base, the Dome crude oil and the Crashing Satellite, radiation and gear, and the smaller Power Trip changes that quietly reshaped base building. Every number here is checked against Facepunch’s own devblog and the monument data, not copied from a two year old guide.

What Is the Power Plant in Rust?
The Power Plant is one of Rust’s large radtowns, built around two big cooling towers and a three story main building full of machinery. For years it was known for two things: a solid recycler setup and a keycard puzzle that hands out a Red Keycard. It has no radiation to speak of in the open, no scientists guarding it, and it sits on a road so you can drive right up. That made it one of the safest red card runs in the game, and it still is.
What changed is its role. The Power Trip update turned the Power Plant into the heart of a new player maintained power system. Instead of every monument feature being on all the time, a lot of them now sit dormant until somebody powers the plant. When it runs, electricity flows down the roadside lines that have been decorating the map for years, and features light up across half a dozen other monuments. When it goes dark, they switch back off. It is the closest thing Rust has to a server wide light switch, and any player can flip it.
Power Plant Rust Stats and Facts
Here is the whole monument in one table, pulled from the current monument data rather than an old guide.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Monument type | Large radtown, not a safe zone |
| Scientists | None |
| Radiation | Median 0, max 52 in the sealed rooms |
| Recyclers | 3 green, plus 1 red at max power |
| Oil refineries | 2 on site |
| Loot puzzle | Green Keycard + Blue Keycard + 1 Electric Fuse |
| Puzzle reward | Red Keycard and 3 Basic Blueprint Fragments |
| Switches / timer | 3 switches and 1 timer |
| Diesel | 2 to 3 barrels (behind the puzzle) |
| Crates | About 31 crates and 15 barrels |
| Tunnel entrance | Yes, links to the underground rail |
| No build zone | 138,544 m² |
| Reset time | About 30 minutes |
Two details matter more than the rest. First, there are no scientists, which makes this a combat free monument as long as another player does not show up. Second, the oil refineries and the tunnel entrance make it a genuine base location, not just a loot stop. It shows up all over our Rust monuments guide for exactly that reason.
The Power Trip Update: What Changed at the Power Plant
The Power Trip update landed on 6 August 2026 and it is the biggest monument rework Rust has shipped in years. The headline is the player maintained monument system, and the Power Plant is its control room. Nearly everything new in the update runs through it.
Before Power Trip, monument features were simply on. Car lifts worked, recyclers ran at 60%, that was that. Now the game starts each wipe in Phase 0 with the grid dead: recyclers are dialled down to 50%, and a stack of monument features are switched off until somebody powers the plant. The tool for that is a new item, the Heavy Fuse, and the more of them the server feeds into the Power Plant, the more the map wakes up.
Heavy Fuses: The New Item That Powers Everything
The Heavy Fuse is the key item of the whole update. You cannot raise the power grid without it, and it is loot only, so there is no crafting your way around the grind.
| Heavy Fuse | Detail |
|---|---|
| How you get it | Military crates about 12%, brown crates about 8% |
| Craftable? | No, loot only |
| Burn time | 9,600 seconds, which is 2 hours 40 minutes |
| Removable? | No, it stays until it burns out |
| Recycles for | 20 scrap, same as a normal fuse |
| Also works | In any fuse box on the map, great for puzzles |
At an 8 to 12% drop rate they are common enough that you will pick a few up just running monuments, but you need a lot to hit the top power level, so they are worth hoarding. The 9,600 second burn is the number to remember: once a fuse is in, it powers the grid for two hours and forty minutes and then dies, and you cannot pull it back out to save it. Keeping the plant lit is an ongoing job, which is exactly why Facepunch calls the whole thing a “player maintained” system.
One quiet perk: because a heavy fuse works in any fuse box, you can drop one into a monument puzzle that normally eats a short lived Electric Fuse and get a run that lasts nearly three hours instead of a couple of minutes. For long group sessions on a red card monument, that alone can be worth it.
The Four Power Levels Explained
The grid climbs through four phases, and the number of Heavy Fuses in the plant decides the level. Each phase raises the power on the roadside poles and unlocks a new tier of features. It stacks for the whole server, so anyone can top the fuses up, and the perks stay live until the fuses burn out.
| Phase | Heavy Fuses | Power / Pole | What Turns On |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 0 | Off | Fresh wipe. Recyclers run at 50%. Nothing is powered. |
| 1 | 1 to 3 | 12 | Roadside poles (1 turret’s worth), gas station car lift, supermarket freezer, Water Treatment valves and water stations, Airfield airdrop caller, blue room. |
| 2 | 4 to 9 | 18 | Every green recycler on the map is restored to its full 60% efficiency. |
| 3 | 10 to 17 | 24 | Oil Rig switches arm the Dome crude oil pumps. |
| 4 | 18+ | 30 | 75% red recycler, all recyclers speed up to 4.5s, Airfield Chinook call, Launch Site satellite crash. |
The jump most players care about is Phase 1, because a single fuse switches on the roadside power and the everyday convenience features. The endgame jump is Phase 4 at 18 fuses, which is a real commitment but unlocks the best recycler in the game and two big events. Phases 2 and 3 are the steps in between: recyclers back to normal, then crude oil at the Dome.
How to Run the Power Plant (Power the Grid)
Powering the plant is the new way to “run” the Power Plant, and it is refreshingly simple. Inside the main building there are now two heavy fuse boxes: one on the first floor in the corner, and one on the second floor next to the windows. Between them they hold a full stack of fuses, and 18 lights the top level.
- Bring Heavy Fuses. One to start Phase 1, up to 18 for the top level. Loot them from military and brown crates.
- Find the two fuse boxes. First floor corner and second floor by the windows. You do not need the loot puzzle done to reach the ground floor box.
- Insert the fuses. The engines in the middle of the building start up and smoke rises from the chimney, the visual sign the plant is live.
- Watch the green lights. A row of lights shows the current power level, so you always know how many more fuses a jump needs.
- Top up over time. Fuses burn out after 2h 40m, so on a busy server people keep feeding the boxes to hold the grid up.
The Power Plant Loot Puzzle (Green, Blue and the Red Card)
The classic reason to visit is still here, and it is unchanged by Power Trip: solve the puzzle, open the blue card room, and walk out with a Red Keycard plus three Basic Blueprint Fragments. This is the “how to do Power Plant” most guides mean, and it still uses one normal Electric Fuse, not a heavy one.
You need a Green Keycard, a Blue Keycard and one Electric Fuse before you start.
- Switch 1. Head to the three story building opposite the broken cooling tower, climb to the balcony, and flip the switch on the generator under the second staircase.
- Switch 2 and the timer. Cross diagonally to the slanted roof shed on the north west side and hit the second switch, which starts a timer on the green door.
- Green door. Rush the green door on the first floor of the main building and swipe your Green Keycard before the timer runs out.
- Final switch. Inside, go around the machinery to the back and flip the last switch.
- Place the fuse. Head up to the third floor and drop your Electric Fuse into the box in the storage area, right hand corner.
- Blue door and the reward. Return to the blue door by the stairwell, swipe your Blue Keycard, and grab the loot plus the Red Keycard off the desk on the upper level.
That Red Keycard is the whole point for a lot of players, because it is the card you need for Missile Silo and the big red card rooms. Power Plant is one of the more reliable places to farm one, and with no scientists in the way it is far less risky than fighting for cards elsewhere.
How to Power Your Base From the Power Plant
Here is the part base builders care about. Once the plant is running, the wooden poles along the roads carry real power, and you can wire that straight into your base for free electricity, no solar panels or windmills needed.
Some poles carry a transformer, and those are the ones you tap. You climb the pole like a ladder, no actual ladder required, because they use the same climb mechanic as jungle trees. Each transformer has six output ports, and it behaves like a splitter: connect a single line and it takes all the available power, connect all six and it divides evenly, so five power each at the top level. Wire it up with the Wire Tool, and only the owner of a connection can disconnect it.
The amount available scales with the power level: 12 at Phase 1, then 18, 24, and 30 at the top. Even 12 power is enough to run a single Auto Turret, which is why the poles matter from the very first fuse. If you want the pole outside your base, the honest catch is that anyone can wire the same pole, so a contested pole becomes a small territory fight, raid the base tapping it or go find another one.
What Each Power Level Unlocks Across the Map
The reason the Power Plant matters so much now is that powering it lights up features at half a dozen other monuments. Here is the tour, roughly in the order the phases unlock them.
Gas station car lift and supermarket freezer (Phase 1)
Oxum’s Gas Station gets a working car lift behind a real garage door, so you can service and modify vehicles there. The gas station has its own small generator too, so the lift works on low grade fuel even if the plant is dark, but it is cleaner with the grid up. There is also a new advanced vehicle crate in the cave under the lift. Over at the supermarket, a freezer stocks food and pies while the plant runs, and switches off the moment the power drops.
Water stations (Phase 1)
Power lets you activate roadside water stations scattered around the map. To turn them on you visit Water Treatment with two Gears, insert one into each of the two valve wheels (one on top of the jump puzzle, one in the blue card room area), and crank them. Each station then holds 15,000 units of clean water, which you can drink, jug, or move with a vehicle. For anyone farming without a river nearby, that is a huge deal.
Dome crude oil (Phase 3)
At Phase 3, the Dome becomes a crude oil farm. You arm it by flipping switches in the Oil Rig card rooms, red keycard on the Large rig, blue on the Small. The Large rig switch runs the pumps at full rate, the Small rig at half, and using both together gives 1.5x. In testing that has worked out to roughly 540 crude from the Small rig, about 1,080 from the Large, and around 1,600 with both, over a 20 minute pump, though Facepunch is still tuning the exact yields. To collect it, drive a car with a tank module to the Dome, connect the hose to the pumps (you can run all three at once), and take the crude out with a car lift. Refine that into low grade with a small oil refinery.
Airfield airdrops and Chinook (Phase 1 and Phase 4)
Climb the Airfield tower and you find two computers and two fuse boxes. From Phase 1, feed the upper box and press the button to call an hour of doubled airdrops at random spots on the map. At Phase 4, the second computer and lower panel come alive, letting you call a one time Chinook crate straight to the Airfield, like the Oil Rig heavy call but with no NPCs to fight.
The Crashing Satellite (Phase 4)
The showpiece of the update is the Crashing Satellite, unlocked at Phase 4. In the Launch Site control room there is a new computer station. Insert an MLRS Aiming Module (and around 9 tech trash in the current build, still in development), pick a satellite and steer where it lands with the thruster buttons, then lock it in. About 10 minutes later a satellite streaks down and crashes, visible to the whole server. Once the fire dies you loot up to five crates and mine the wreck for high quality metal, tech trash, CCTV cameras, targeting computers, more aiming modules, solar panels, and three engine modules that recycle into explosives. Cooldown is still being tuned, with sources citing anywhere from about 45 minutes up to 3 hours, and the crash site runs hot with radiation, so gear up.
Recyclers at the Power Plant (and the Red Recycler)
The Power Plant has always had recyclers, but Power Trip tied their efficiency to the grid, which is a big reason players now fight over the plant. It has three green recyclers plus a brand new red recycler that only works at max power.
| Recycler | Efficiency | Speed | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Green, unpowered | 50% | 5.0s | Phase 0, every wipe start. |
| Green, powered | 60% | 5.0s | Phase 2 restores the classic rate. |
| Green, max grid | 60% | 4.5s | Phase 4 speeds every recycler up. |
| Red recycler Best in game | 75% | 4.0s | Phase 4 only, next to the puzzle room. |
That is the twist Power Trip added: on a fresh wipe, every green recycler on the entire map is stuck at 50% until the plant reaches Phase 2. So the first group to power the plant is quietly doing the whole server a favour, and the last one to hold Phase 4 controls the only 75% recycler in the game. Safe zone recyclers at Outpost and Bandit Camp are untouched by all this and stay at their usual 40% and 8 seconds. For the full breakdown of what recycles into what, see our Rust recycler guide.
Power Plant Radiation and What to Bring
This trips new players up, because the Power Plant reads as low radiation on the map and then poisons them inside. The open yard is genuinely near zero rads, which is why you can drive up and loot the outer crates in anything. The sealed rooms, the puzzle building interior and the card rooms, spike up toward a max of 52, high enough to tick your health even through protection.
Does the Power Plant Have Scientists?
No. The Power Plant has no scientists and no NPC defenders at all. That is one of its best features and the reason it is such a friendly monument for newer players and solos. There is no combat built into the monument, so the only threat is other players who happen to be there at the same time.
That makes the Power Plant one of the safest red card sources in the game. Compare it to fighting through the elite scientists at Missile Silo or an Oil Rig, and the Power Plant’s zero NPC puzzle looks very appealing. The trade off is that everyone knows it is easy, so contested servers see plenty of players passing through, especially now that the fuse boxes give people a reason to keep coming back.
Other Power Trip Changes Worth Knowing
Power Trip was not only about the Power Plant. A few other changes in the same update reshape how you play around it, and they are easy to miss.
| Change | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Auto Turret cost up | Now 25 High Quality Metal to craft, up from 10. |
| High walls cost upkeep | High external walls and gates now draw upkeep from your tool cupboard, to stop clans walling off monuments. |
| Recycle Bin storage | The recycle bin now has its own inventory, so cashback goes into the bin, not your pockets. |
| Wolf headdress | Now needs a Tier 1 workbench to craft. |
| Water Well vendor | Sells only 2 items before a 10 minute restock, up from a 2 minute wait. |
| Bar Games DLC | A cosmetic pack with pool, darts, a jukebox and mini fridge skins. No pay to win. |
The Auto Turret change stings if you defend with them, since 25 HQM per turret is a real jump, and the high wall upkeep is the one base builders need to plan for. Walling off a compound now has an ongoing stone or wood cost, so bank more upkeep than you used to. If you run turrets on your walls, that combination, pricier turrets fed by pole power, is the defining base building shift of this update.
Powered the plant right before a force wipe? Every heavy fuse, every wired connection and every blueprint resets when the server force wipes. Check the countdown before you sink fuses into the grid.
Force Wipe CountdownPro Tips for the Power Plant
- One fuse is the sweet spot for a solo. A single Heavy Fuse lights the roadside poles and the convenience features. You do not need 18 to benefit.
- Do the loot puzzle with a normal fuse, not a heavy one. The blue room only needs an Electric Fuse. Save your Heavy Fuses for the grid.
- Wire a road pole for a free turret. 12 power at Phase 1 runs one Auto Turret with no generator of your own.
- Bring meds, not just a Hazmat. The sealed rooms tick through the suit. Syringes keep you topped up.
- Grab the Red Keycard every visit. It is the gateway to Missile Silo and the Large Oil Rig, and Power Plant is a safe place to farm one.
- Watch the green lights. They tell you the current power level at a glance, so you know how many more fuses a jump needs.
- Do not expect your fuses back. Once placed they burn down and cannot be pulled. Contribute what you can spare.
- Use a heavy fuse for long puzzle sessions. Dropped into a normal monument fuse box it lasts nearly three hours instead of two minutes.

Final Thoughts
The Power Plant went from a quiet red card stop to the beating heart of the whole server in one update. That is a lot of new mechanics, but the core of it is simple: Heavy Fuses in, power out, and the more the server pours in, the more the map wakes up.
For a solo, one fuse and the loot puzzle is still a great, low risk run. For a group, holding Phase 4 gives you the best recycler in the game and two events nobody else can trigger. And for anyone building a base, a wired road pole is free power for your turrets and traps, as long as you can hold the pole. It is the rare monument that rewards a fresh spawn and an endgame clan for completely different reasons.
Whatever you do with it, remember it all resets on the force wipe. Fuses, connections, blueprints, the lot. Check the clock before you commit, because the grid you build up over a wipe goes dark the moment the timer hits zero.
