Boonie Hat Rust: Craft Cost, Stats, Blueprint & Bandana Combo (2026)

Rust clothing guide, 2026

The boonie hat in Rust is the best cheap hat in the game. It costs 10 cloth, needs no workbench, and gives more bullet protection than any other cloth hat. There is one catch most guides skip: you can only craft it if you own a Boonie Hat skin on Steam.

This guide covers the Boonie Hat’s craft cost and how its blueprint really works, its exact protection stats, how it compares with the other hats, the boonie and bandana combo, where to loot one, the best outfit to wear it with, and what you get from recycling it.

TL;DR The Boonie Hat costs 10 cloth with no workbench and takes about 15 seconds. The blueprint is not researchable: it unlocks when you own any Boonie Hat skin in your Steam inventory, so players without one have to loot it. It gives 15% projectile, 15% melee, about 7% cold, 3% bite and 2% radiation protection. It stacks with a bandana for 20% bullets and 25% melee. Look for it in basic crates (about 4.8%) and barrels (about 1.1%). A recycler gives back 6 cloth (4 at a safe zone recycler).

What Is the Boonie Hat in Rust?

The Boonie Hat (shortname hat.boonie) is a wide brimmed cloth hat that goes in the head slot. The game describes it as offering minor protection from damage and cold for your head, and that is exactly what it is: a starter hat that beats the Baseball Cap and Beenie Hat for bullets and melee.

Its real value is that it is a hat, not a face piece. That means a bandana fits under it, and the two add together. Our Rust clothing guide explains how the layers work across the whole body.

How to Craft a Boonie Hat in Rust

How to craft a boonie hat in Rust: 10 cloth makes 1 Boonie Hat with no workbench in 15 seconds; the blueprint comes from owning a Boonie Hat skin; recycles to 6 cloth at a monument recycler or 4 at a safe zone recycler
One ingredient, no bench, but you need the blueprint first.
  1. Collect 10 cloth. Pick a few hemp plants or skin an animal. Our Rust cloth guide covers every source.
  2. Open the crafting menu. The Boonie Hat is in the clothing tab. It needs no workbench.
  3. Craft it. It takes about 15 seconds. If the hat is greyed out with a lock, you do not have the blueprint. Read the next section.

Boonie Hat Blueprint: Why You Might Not Have It

This is the part that confuses most players. In Rust’s item data the Boonie Hat is not a default blueprint and it is not researchable, so a research table will not take it and there is no tech tree node for it. Instead it is flagged as a Steam item: the blueprint unlocks when you own any Boonie Hat skin in your Steam inventory.

  • Own a Boonie Hat skin? You can craft the hat for 10 cloth on every server, every wipe.
  • No skin? You cannot craft it. Loot one from basic crates and barrels instead, or buy a cheap Boonie Hat skin from the Steam market or the Rust Item Store when one rotates in.
  • Got one from a Twitch drop? The Rust Isles Boonie Hat from our Rust Twitch drops guide counts as a skin, so it unlocks the craft too.

The same rule applies to the Baseball Cap and the Bandana Mask. The Beenie Hat is different: anyone can research it.

Tip Skins only change the look. A skinned Boonie Hat has exactly the same 15% bullet and 15% melee protection as the plain one. See our Rust skins guide for how skins and the market work.

Rust Boonie Hat Protection

Rust boonie hat protection stats: 15% projectile, 15% melee, 7% cold, 3% bite and 2% radiation
The best bullet numbers of any cloth hat.

The Boonie Hat gives 15% projectile and 15% melee protection to your head. That is half again what a Baseball Cap or Beenie Hat gives, and it matches the Improvised Balaclava. Cold protection is small, about 7%, so it is not a snow hat.

Bite and radiation are tiny at 3% and 2%. For rad towns you still need a hazmat suit.

Boonie Hat vs Other Rust Hats

Rust boonie hat compared with other cloth head items: Boonie Hat 15% bullets, 15% melee, 7% cold for 10 cloth; Baseball Cap 10%, 10%, 7% for 5 cloth; Beenie Hat 10%, 10%, 7% for 15 cloth; Bandana Mask 5%, 10%, 10% for 5 cloth; Improvised Balaclava 15%, 15%, 13% for 15 cloth
The boonie ties the balaclava for bullets and costs less cloth.

Worn alone, the Boonie Hat and the Improvised Balaclava tie for bullets and melee. The balaclava is warmer, but it covers the face, so the game will not let you add a bandana to it. The boonie can take a bandana, which makes it the stronger cloth head setup. Once you have metal, a Wolf Headdress or Coffee Can Helmet beats any hat.

Boonie Hat and Bandana Combo

Rust boonie hat and bandana combo: 15% boonie bullet protection plus 5% bandana equals 20% bullets together, 25% melee together, 17% cold together, for a total of 15 cloth
Two cheap pieces that add together.

Rust adds the protection of every piece on the same body part. A bandana sits on the face and the boonie sits on top, so wearing both gives about 20% bullets, 25% melee and 17% cold for just 15 cloth and no workbench. That is the strongest head setup you can make from cloth alone on wipe day.

It still falls well short of a Metal Facemask at 50% bullets, which is why the facemask is the end goal in our Rust armor guide.

How to Get a Boonie Hat in Rust

How to get a boonie hat in Rust: craft it for 10 cloth if you own a skin, about 4.8% chance in a basic crate, about 1.1% in yellow and blue barrels, Halloween event loot, and any Boonie Hat skin from the Steam market unlocks the craft
No skin means loot is your only route.
  • Craft it. 10 cloth, no workbench, if you own a Boonie Hat skin.
  • Basic crates: about a 4.8% chance per crate. These are the brown crates at roads and monuments.
  • Yellow and blue barrels: about 1.1% each.
  • Seasonal events: Halloween and Christmas event loot can drop it.

Since the hat is cheap and common in crates, most players without a skin just wear whatever they find on a barrel run.

Best Boonie Hat Outfit

Best boonie hat outfit in Rust for the desert: Boonie Hat plus Bandana on the head for 20% bullets and 15 cloth, T-Shirt on the chest, Shorts on the legs, and Boots on the feet for 10% bullets at a Workbench 2
Light clothing for hot biomes.

The boonie hat is the classic desert hat. In hot biomes heavy clothing makes you overheat, so the usual kit is a boonie and bandana, a t-shirt, shorts and boots. That keeps your temperature down while still giving your head 20% bullet protection. In the snow, swap it for a balaclava and a snow jacket.

Rust Boonie Hat Tips

Rust boonie hat tips: add a bandana for 20% bullets, upgrade to a wolf headdress later, check basic crates for a 4.8% drop chance, no skin means no blueprint so loot one, swap for a metal facemask at Workbench 3, and skip the recycler for only 6 cloth back
Small habits that make the boonie hat worth wearing.
  • Always add a bandana. Five more cloth takes you from 15% to 20% bullets.
  • Upgrade once you have a wolf skull. A Wolf Headdress plus bandana gives 35% bullets.
  • Check basic crates on wipe day. At 4.8% you will find one on most road runs.
  • No skin, no blueprint. Do not waste scrap looking for it at a research table.
  • Swap it for a facemask later. The Metal Facemask is 50% bullets at a Workbench 3.
  • Remember the wipe. Your hat goes with everything else when the server resets, but a skin keeps the blueprint. Check when the next force wipe is.
