An armored wall in Rust takes 15 rockets to break, which costs 21,000 sulfur. It also takes 8 C4 (17,600 sulfur), 46 satchel charges (22,080 sulfur) or 799 explosive 5.56 rounds (19,975 sulfur). C4 is the cheapest way through, and nothing else comes close.
Armored walls (also called HQM walls) are Rust’s top building tier: 2,000 HP for 25 high quality metal each. They’re built to make raiding expensive, and they do. Here’s every explosive that breaks one, and why most raiders look for another way in.
How Many Rockets for an Armored Wall?
15 rockets break an armored wall, for 21,000 sulfur. Firing them takes about 1 min 24 sec with reloads, which is five full rocket stacks.
That’s 3,400 sulfur more than 8 C4. Rockets only make sense on an armored wall you can’t reach, like a high wall on a tower or one covered by turrets. On a wall you can walk up to, C4 is cheaper and faster. See our rocket guide.
How Many C4 for an Armored Wall?
8 C4 break an armored wall, for 17,600 sulfur. That’s the cheapest explosive and the fastest, about 20 sec from the first stick.
Eight is the minimum: seven leaves the wall standing. Budget for 9 if a turret or a defender might destroy one before it goes off. Full recipe in our C4 guide.
How Many Satchels for an Armored Wall?
46 satchel charges break an armored wall, for 22,080 sulfur. That’s the most expensive of the main options, and with duds you’ll want over 50.
Nobody raids an armored wall with satchels. If satchels are what you have, use them on a weaker part of the base: a sheet metal door is 4 and a garage door is 9.
How Much Explo Ammo for an Armored Wall?
799 rounds of explosive 5.56 break an armored wall, for 19,975 sulfur. It’s cheaper than rockets or satchels but takes about 5 min 47 sec of fire, which on most servers means you’ll be counter raided before you finish. More in our explosive ammo guide.
Every Explosive vs an Armored Wall (Full Table)
Here is every explosive that can break an armored wall, sorted from the cheapest to the most expensive in sulfur. Amounts are for one undamaged armored wall in vanilla Rust, hitting the hard side. Raid time is how long it takes to land that many from the moment you start, with no defenders.
| Explosive | Amount | Sulfur | Raid time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Timed Explosive Charge (C4)Cheapest | 8 | 17,600 | 20 sec | Workbench 3, sticks and blows in 10 sec |
| Explosive 5.56 Ammo | 799 | 19,975 | 5 min 47 sec | Workbench 3, 2 rounds per craft |
| Rocket | 15 | 21,000 | 1 min 24 sec | Workbench 3, fired from range |
| Satchel Charge | 46 | 22,080 | 1 min 16 sec | Workbench 1, can dud |
| Beancan Grenade | 223 | 26,760 | 13 min 59 sec | Workbench 1, can dud |
| High Velocity Rocket | 134 | 26,800 | 13 min 18 sec | Workbench 2, weak vs buildings |
| F1 Grenade | 1,986 | 119,160 | 82 min 47 sec | Workbench 2, never worth it |
| MLRS Rocket | 12 | Loot only | n/a | Loot only, from the MLRS |
| 40mm HE Grenade | 114 | Loot only | 2 min 26 sec | Loot only, grenade launcher |
The Cheapest Way to Break an Armored Wall
Straight 8 C4 for 17,600 sulfur is the cheapest way to break an armored wall with carried explosives. Explo ammo (19,975), rockets (21,000) and satchels (22,080) all cost more.
The real cheapest way is to not break the armored wall at all. An armored door has half the HP (1,000) and takes 3 C4, and many bases have a garage door, a window or a stone piece somewhere on the path. If you find an MLRS at Abandoned Military Base, a full barrage of 12 MLRS rockets breaks one armored wall, but only if every rocket hits it directly.
Can the MLRS Break an Armored Wall?
Yes, but it takes the whole barrage. An armored wall needs 12 MLRS rockets, the full 12 rocket load, and every rocket has to land directly on that wall. In practice some splash onto other pieces, so the MLRS is better at breaking several weaker parts of a base than one armored wall. Our MLRS guide covers aiming modules and range.
Explosives do the same damage to both faces of an armored wall, so the soft side doesn’t help with boom. With tools, the soft side takes about 59 salvaged icepicks and over an hour, which isn’t a realistic raid.
Armored Wall vs Other Walls
Armored walls double sheet metal’s HP and double the C4 bill again. Here’s how they compare with the rest of the base:
| Target | HP | Rockets | C4 | Satchels | Explo ammo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stone wall | 500 | 4 | 2 | 10 | 185 |
| Sheet metal wall | 1,000 | 8 | 4 | 23 | 400 |
| Armored wall | 2,000 | 15 | 8 | 46 | 799 |
| Armored door | 1,000 | 5 | 3 | 15 | 250 |
Every armored building piece with 2,000 HP (half walls, low walls, doorways, window walls, wall frames and foundations) takes the same 8 C4. See our armored wall guide for HQM cost and upkeep.

Tips for Raiding an Armored Wall
- Raid the door, not the wall. An armored door is 3 C4. The wall around it is 8.
- Look for the weak piece. One stone or sheet metal piece on the path cuts the cost by thousands of sulfur.
- Bring a ninth C4. Turrets and defenders can shoot a charge off the wall before it blows.
- Don’t open with explo ammo. Almost 6 minutes of fire is an invitation to every group nearby.
- Check if it’s decaying. Armored pieces decay in 12 hours without upkeep. An offline base out of HQM gets cheaper every hour.
