A garage door in Rust takes 9 satchel charges to break, which costs 4,320 sulfur. It also takes 2 C4 (4,400 sulfur), 3 rockets (4,200 sulfur) or 150 explosive 5.56 rounds (3,750 sulfur). Explo ammo is the cheapest, and rockets are cheaper than satchels and C4 on this door.
The garage door is the best value door in Rust: 600 HP for 300 metal fragments and 2 gears at a Workbench 2. It more than doubles the raid cost of a sheet metal door for a few gears. Here’s every explosive that breaks one.
How Many Satchels for a Garage Door?
9 satchel charges break a garage door, for 4,320 sulfur. Throwing all nine takes about 21 sec, and it’s the same from either side.
Bring 11. Satchels can dud, and nine is a lot of chances for one to fizzle. If you don’t have the satchel blueprint yet, it’s 100 scrap at a research table. See our satchel guide.
How Many Rockets for a Garage Door?
3 rockets break a garage door, for 4,200 sulfur. That’s one of the few targets where rockets beat satchels and C4 on price. Three rockets is one full stack, fired in about 12 sec, and you can do it from range. More in our rocket guide.
How Many C4 for a Garage Door?
2 C4 break a garage door, for 4,400 sulfur. It’s the fastest way, about 12 sec. One C4 isn’t enough: it leaves the door standing. More in our C4 guide.
How Much Explo Ammo for a Garage Door?
150 rounds of explosive 5.56 break a garage door, for 3,750 sulfur. It’s the cheapest option and the same with every rifle. Expect about 1 min 4 sec of fire with a semi-automatic rifle. More in our explosive ammo guide.
Every Explosive vs a Garage Door (Full Table)
Here is every explosive that can break a garage door, sorted from the cheapest to the most expensive in sulfur. Amounts are for one undamaged garage door in vanilla Rust. Raid time is how long it takes to land that many from the moment you start, with no defenders.
| Explosive | Amount | Sulfur | Raid time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Explosive 5.56 AmmoCheapest | 150 | 3,750 | 1 min 4 sec | Workbench 3, 2 rounds per craft |
| Rocket | 3 | 4,200 | 12 sec | Workbench 3, fired from range |
| Satchel Charge | 9 | 4,320 | 21 sec | Workbench 1, can dud |
| Timed Explosive Charge (C4) | 2 | 4,400 | 12 sec | Workbench 3, sticks and blows in 10 sec |
| High Velocity Rocket | 25 | 5,000 | 2 min 24 sec | Workbench 2, weak vs buildings |
| Beancan Grenade | 42 | 5,040 | 2 min 40 sec | Workbench 1, can dud |
| F1 Grenade | 120 | 7,200 | 5 min 2 sec | Workbench 2, never worth it |
| MLRS Rocket | 3 | Loot only | n/a | Loot only, from the MLRS |
| 40mm HE Grenade | 22 | Loot only | 25 sec | Loot only, grenade launcher |
The Cheapest Way to Break a Garage Door
With a Workbench 3: 150 explo ammo for 3,750 sulfur. Without one, 9 satchels (4,320) is the Workbench 1 option, and 42 beancans (5,040) work if you can’t make satchels. Rockets at 4,200 are the best value if you need range.
Garage doors don’t burn, so molotovs and fire arrows do nothing to them.
Garage Door or Wall Frame: Which Is Cheaper?
A garage door sits in a wall frame, and raiders will break whichever is cheaper. A stone wall frame has 500 HP and takes 2 C4 or 10 satchels, which is about the same as the door. A sheet metal frame has 1,000 HP and takes 4 C4, so the door is cheaper. If you’re defending, put your garage door in at least a stone frame, ideally sheet metal.
Garage doors are slow to open and close, so most players use them for loot rooms, vehicle bays and the inner doors of an airlock rather than the front door they run through all day. Our garage door guide covers crafting, skins and placement.
Garage Door vs Other Doors
The garage door sits between sheet metal and armored on raid cost:
| Door | HP | Satchels | C4 | Rockets | Explo ammo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wooden door | 200 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 18 to 19 |
| Sheet metal door | 250 | 4 | 1 | 2 | 63 |
| Garage door | 600 | 9 | 2 | 3 | 150 |
| Armored door | 1,000 | 15 | 3 | 5 | 250 |
For defenders, that’s the garage door’s whole appeal: 9 satchels for 300 metal fragments and 2 gears, against 15 for an armored door that needs 20 HQM and a Workbench 3.

Tips for Raiding a Garage Door
- Check the frame. A garage door in a twig or wood frame is cheaper to raid through the frame.
- Rockets work here. 3 rockets is cheaper than 9 satchels or 2 C4.
- Bring 11 satchels. Two spares for duds.
- Explo on offline raids. 150 rounds is the cheapest, but it takes a minute of fire.
- Two C4 for speed. When the clock matters more than sulfur, 2 C4 and you’re in.
