M39 Rust: Rifle Stats, Where to Find It & Bandit Camp Price (2026)

Rust weapons guide, 2026

Crack open an airdrop and there is a decent chance a long, black rifle is sitting inside. That is the M39 Rifle, Rust’s military grade semi auto. It hits as hard as an AK per shot, it is pinpoint accurate, and you cannot craft it, research it or put it on the tech tree.

This M39 Rust guide covers the gun’s real stats, every place it drops, how to buy one at Bandit Camp, how it stacks up against the SAR, AK and LR-300, the best ammo and attachments, what it recycles into and how many shots it takes to kill.

TL;DR The M39 Rifle is a loot only semi automatic 5.56 rifle. It does 50 damage a shot (100 on a headshot) at about 343 RPM from a 20 round magazine, with a 3.25 second reload and a 0.1 degree aim cone. Your best source is a Supply Drop (about 18%); elite crates, heli crates and Bradley crates only give it around 1% of the time. You can also buy it for 400 scrap at the Bandit Camp Black Market with no blueprint. It recycles into 30 HQM, 3 metal springs and a 60% chance at a rifle body.

What Is the M39 Rifle in Rust?

The M39 is a semi automatic designated marksman rifle that fires 5.56 Rifle Ammo. Its in-game description is simply “Military grade semi auto rifle”, and in the game files it is rifle.m39 with item ID 28201841 (see our Rust item IDs list).

Think of it as the big brother of the Semi-Auto Rifle. Both fire one bullet per click, but the M39 does 50 damage instead of 40, carries 20 rounds instead of 16 and is more accurate. Because it is semi auto, there is no spray pattern to learn: your rate of fire and your recoil both come down to how fast and how calmly you click.

The trade-off is supply. The M39 sits in the same military tier as the L96, M249 and LR-300. There is no blueprint, so every M39 you use is one you looted or bought. Lose it and you go back to hunting for another.

Why it feels so strong The M39 matches the AK at 50 damage a bullet, but with a 0.1 degree aim cone almost every shot lands exactly where the crosshair sits. At mid range it is often more reliable than an AK you are struggling to control.

Where to Find the M39 in Rust

Where to find the M39 in Rust: Supply Drop about 18%, Elite Crate about 1%, Patrol Helicopter crate about 1%, Bradley crates about 0.5%, tunnel dwellers carry it, and Bandit Camp sells it for 400 scrap
Airdrops beat every crate by a mile.

The M39 only spawns in high tier loot. These are the approximate chances per container from current loot tables (they shift a little between updates):

SourceChanceWhere
Supply Drop~18% (1 to 2 rifles)Server airdrops and thrown Supply Signals
Elite Crate~1%Launch Site, Military Tunnels, Underwater Labs
Heli Crate~1%The wreck of a downed Patrol Helicopter
Bradley Crate~0.5%Crates left by the Bradley APC, plus its heavy scientists
Tunnel DwellersCarried weaponThe underground rail network
Bandit Camp Black MarketAlways in stock400 scrap

If you want an M39 on purpose, Supply Drops are the only reliable route. Around one in five drops has one, so a team that farms a few Supply Signals or fights over server airdrops will see it far more often than anyone looting elite crates. Tunnel dwellers, the 125 HP scientists below the rail network, are the other reason to see M39s early in a wipe, because they fight with one.

How to Buy the M39 at Bandit Camp

Buy the M39 at Bandit Camp in Rust: the Black Market sells the M39 Rifle for 400 scrap, the LR-300 for 500 and the M92 pistol for 250, with no blueprint needed
The only shop in Rust that sells military guns outright.

The Black Market at Bandit Camp sells the M39 for 400 scrap. You walk away with a working rifle, no blueprint, research or workbench needed. It is 100 scrap cheaper than the LR-300, which is why many players grab the M39 when they cannot quite afford the LR.

Bandit Camp is a safe zone, so stash your gear first and do not aim a weapon at anyone inside or the guards will open fire. If you are short on scrap, our Rust scrap guide covers the fastest ways to farm it.

  • M39 vs SAR: a straight upgrade. 25% more damage per shot, 4 more rounds and a tighter aim cone. If you find an M39, your SAR becomes a backup.
  • M39 vs AK: the M39 wins at mid to long range because every shot lands where you aim. The AK wins up close, where 30 rounds of full auto beats anyone clicking.
  • M39 vs LR-300: the LR is the easier gun to win close fights with. The M39 hits harder per bullet and is the better pick for holding an angle or a compound wall.

For the full weapon ranking, see our Rust weapons tier list, where the M39 sits in S tier.

Best M39 Ammo and Attachments

Best M39 ammo and attachments in Rust: 5.56 Rifle Ammo, HV, Incendiary and Explosive rounds, plus Holosight, 8x Zoom Scope, Extended Magazine and Burst Module
Every 5.56 round fits, and so does the full rifle attachment set.

Ammo. The M39 fires the same 5.56 as the AK, SAR, LR-300, Bolt Action Rifle and M249:

  • 5.56 Rifle Ammo: the default and the best value. 50 damage a shot.
  • HV 5.56: faster, flatter bullets for long range shots, at a small damage cost.
  • Incendiary 5.56: sets things on fire but leaves a bright tracer that gives away your position.
  • Explosive 5.56: a soft raiding round, weak against players. See our explosive ammo guide.

Attachments. The M39 takes the full rifle attachment set:

  • Holosight: 20% tighter aim cone and a clean sight picture. The best all-round pick.
  • 8x Zoom Scope or Variable Zoom Scope: turns the M39 into a proper marksman rifle, at the cost of 50% more recoil.
  • Extended Magazine: 20 rounds becomes 25.
  • Weapon Lasersight: 20% tighter aim cone and much better hip fire.
  • Burst Module: fires short bursts instead of single shots, with less recoil and spread per shot. You get it by recycling a Prototype 17.
  • Muzzle Brake: halves recoil but costs 15% damage.
  • Silencers: hide your muzzle flash and sound for roaming, but cut damage and bullet speed.

M39 Recycle Yield

M39 recycle yield in Rust: 30 high quality metal, 3 metal springs and a 60% chance of a rifle body at a monument recycler, or 20 HQM, 2 springs and 40% at a safe zone recycler
A spare M39 is half of an AK craft.

Put an M39 in a recycler and you get:

  • Monument recycler: 30 High Quality Metal, 3 Metal Springs and a 60% chance of a Rifle Body.
  • Safe zone recycler (Outpost, Bandit Camp): 20 HQM, 2 Metal Springs and a 40% chance of a Rifle Body.

No scrap comes back. Recycling only makes sense if you have spare M39s and need a Rifle Body for an AK or Bolt Action Rifle; otherwise, keep the gun. A dropped M39 despawns after 40 minutes on the ground.

M39 Shots to Kill

M39 shots to kill in Rust: 2 body shots or 1 headshot on a naked player, 2 headshots through a metal facemask, about 3 body shots against a Hazmat Suit and about 4 against a chest plate with a hoodie
Approximate hits at close range with standard 5.56.

Players have 100 HP. With standard ammo at close range, before damage falloff kicks in:

TargetShots to kill
No armor2 body shots, or 1 headshot
Metal Facemask (blocks 50%)2 headshots
Hazmat Suit (blocks 30%)About 3 body shots
Metal Chest Plate + Hoodie (about 45%)About 4 body shots

Arm and leg hits do less, and damage drops off at long range, so treat these as best-case numbers. The lesson is simple: aim for the head. Even through a facemask, two clean headshots end the fight. For more on gear, see our Rust armor guide.

Tips for using the M39

  • Pace your clicks. Spamming the trigger throws off your aim. A steady rhythm keeps every shot on target.
  • Fight at range. Hold roofs, compound walls and monument angles. Avoid running into close fights against AKs and shotguns.
  • Put a holosight on it first. It is the cheapest big upgrade for the gun.
  • Do not roam with it carelessly. There is no blueprint, so a lost M39 is gone until the next airdrop.

Every gun you own disappears on force wipe. Check when the next Rust force wipe is so you know how long your M39 has left.
