Bandages barely scratch your health bar and a Large Medkit is too slow to use mid-fight. The Medical Syringe is the heal that wins gunfights: one click gives you 15 HP on the spot and 20 more over the next few seconds, and a right-click does the same for the teammate in front of you.
This Rust medical syringe guide covers exactly how much it heals, the Workbench 2 recipe, its radiation and poison effects, how it compares to every other heal, our syringe-to-medkit math, where scientists drop them, and the habits that stop you running out.

What Is the Medical Syringe in Rust?
The Medical Syringe is Rust’s mid-game heal. The game describes it simply: “Heal yourself or others with this syringe. Left-click heals you, right-click heals a target.” It sits between the 4-cloth Bandage and Honey Bandage at the bottom of the healing ladder and the Large Medkit at the top.
What makes it the PvP heal is the instant part. Most other heals in Rust work over time, so your health bar climbs slowly while you are still being shot at. The syringe puts 15 HP back the moment the needle goes in, which is often the difference between winning a peek and dying to it.
In the game files the syringe is syringe.medical with item ID 1079279582. You can spawn some on your own server with this command:
inventory.give syringe.medical 2
Every other ID is in our Rust item IDs list.
How Much Does a Medical Syringe Heal in Rust?
A Medical Syringe heals 35 HP in total: 15 HP instantly and 20 HP over time. With a 100 HP health bar, that is just over a third of your health from one item. Three syringes take you from 0 to full (105 HP), with 45 of it landing instantly.
| Effect | Amount | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Instant health | +15 | Lands as soon as you use it |
| Health over time | +20 | Ticks in after the instant heal |
| Radiation | -10 | Small cleanse, not a replacement for anti-rad gear |
| Poison | -5 | Helps with food poisoning |
| Bleeding | None | Use a bandage to stop bleeding |
| Used on a horse | +3.5 speed for 4 s | A short burst for your horse |
The radiation and poison numbers are small. A syringe will clear a light dose of rads after a quick monument run, but for the hot rooms at places like the Power Plant you still want a Hazmat Suit or Anti-Radiation Pills.
Medical Syringe Recipe
| Ingredient | Amount | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Cloth | 15 | Hemp plants and animals |
| Metal Fragments | 10 | Smelted metal ore, recycling |
| Low Grade Fuel | 10 | Cloth + animal fat, barrels, refineries |
- Workbench: Workbench Level 2. You cannot craft it at a Workbench 1.
- Craft time: 10 seconds at a Workbench 2, 5 seconds at a Workbench 3.
- Blueprint: not known by default. Research one at a Research Table for 40 scrap, or unlock it on the Workbench 2 tech tree.
- Stack size: 2. A dropped syringe despawns after 20 minutes.
- Recycling: a monument recycler returns 9 cloth, 6 low grade and 6 metal fragments. A safe zone recycler returns 6, 4 and 4. Only recycle spares you will never use.
input.bind J craft.add 1079279582 1. You still need the blueprint and a Workbench 2 nearby.
How to Use a Medical Syringe
- Put it on your hotbar. Each slot holds 2 syringes, so most players keep two slots of them in a fight.
- Left-click to inject yourself.
- Right-click while looking at a teammate (or any player) close to you to heal them instead. The heal is the same.
- Bleeding? Bandage first. The syringe does not stop bleeding, so you keep losing health under the heal.
Right-click healing is what makes a dedicated medic so useful in group play. One player carrying a stack of syringes can keep a raid or an Oil Rig run going without anyone having to back off and heal themselves.
Medical Syringe vs Bandage, Healing Tea and Large Medkit
| Heal | Instant | Over time | Total | Bench | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bandage | +5 | – | 5 HP | None | Stopping bleeding |
| Honey Bandage | ~8 | ~6 | ~14 HP | WB1 | Early wipe heals, bleeds |
| Medical Syringe | +15 | +20 | 35 HP | WB2 | Mid-fight heals, teammates |
| Pure Healing Tea | +10 | +75 | 85 HP | Mixing Table | Healing after a fight |
| Large Medkit | +10 | +100 | 110 HP | WB2 | Full heals, reviving the wounded |
The pattern is simple. Syringes in the fight, teas and medkits after it. The syringe has the biggest instant heal of any common item, while the tea and the medkit put most of their healing into the slow over-time part.
Syringe to Large Medkit: Is the Upgrade Worth It?
A Large Medkit is crafted from 2 Medical Syringes and 10 Low Grade Fuel at a Workbench 2 in 15 seconds. Here is what that trade actually does, worked out from the game’s heal values:
| 2 Medical Syringes | 1 Large Medkit | Difference | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instant heal | 30 HP | 10 HP | -20 HP |
| Over time | 40 HP | 100 HP | +60 HP |
| Total | 70 HP | 110 HP | +40 HP |
| Raw cost | 30 cloth, 20 frags, 20 low grade | 30 cloth, 20 frags, 30 low grade | +10 low grade |
| Revives a downed player | No | Yes | – |
So the medkit is the better deal on paper: 10 low grade buys you 40 extra HP. The catch is speed. You lose 20 HP of instant healing, which is exactly what you need while someone is still shooting. Keep most of your stock as syringes and convert a few into medkits for reviving teammates and for full heals between fights.
Where to Find Medical Syringes
You do not have to craft every syringe. Scientists drop them constantly, which is why monument runs often pay for their own meds. These are the main sources and their drop chances from the Facepunch item data:
| Source | Chance | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Heavy Scientist (Oil Rig, Cargo, Bradley) | 88.9% | 1-4 |
| Jungle Crate | 42.1% | 1-6 |
| Monument, Cargo, Oil Rig and Patrol scientists | 33.4-36.3% | 1-2 |
| Medical Crate | 25% | 1 |
| Road Scientist | 23.6% | 1 |
| Bandit Guard, Peacekeeper, Tunnel and Underwater Lab Dwellers | 16.7% | 1-2 |
| Brown Medical Crate | 10% | 1 |
| Locked, Elite and Military Crates | 0.4-1.3% | 1-2 |
Heavy Scientists are the jackpot: almost 9 in 10 drop syringes, up to 4 at a time. A full clear of the Large Oil Rig or the Cargo Ship usually leaves you with more syringes than you went in with. Around Christmas, stockings and gingerbread dungeons drop them too.
Medical Syringe Tips
- Research it first at Workbench 2. At 40 scrap it is one of the cheapest and most useful blueprints in the game.
- Jab early, not at 5 HP. Only 15 HP lands instantly. If you wait until you are almost dead, the 20 HP over time comes too late.
- Stack them back to back. Two quick syringes give 30 HP instantly, more than a Large Medkit’s 10.
- Bandage first when bleeding. A syringe will not stop the bleed.
- Keep the low grade flowing. Every syringe needs 10 low grade, so a refinery or a stack of animal fat keeps your med production going.
- Save a medkit for revives. Only the Large Medkit picks a wounded teammate back up.
If you are planning your wipe around meds and blueprints, check when the next Rust force wipe is so your Workbench 2 rush lines up with it.
Medical Syringe FAQ
How much does a medical syringe heal in Rust?
35 HP in total: 15 HP instantly and 20 HP over time. It also removes 10 radiation and 5 poison.
What is the medical syringe recipe in Rust?
15 Cloth, 10 Metal Fragments and 10 Low Grade Fuel at a Workbench Level 2. It takes 10 seconds, or 5 seconds at a Workbench 3.
What workbench do you need for a medical syringe?
A Workbench Level 2. You also need the blueprint, which costs 40 scrap at a Research Table or can be unlocked on the Workbench 2 tech tree.
How do you heal a teammate with a syringe in Rust?
Hold the syringe, look at your teammate and right-click. Left-click heals yourself instead. The heal amount is the same either way.
Does a medical syringe stop bleeding in Rust?
No. The syringe heals health, radiation and poison, but it does not stop bleeding. Use a Bandage or Honey Bandage for that.
How many syringes stack in Rust?
Medical syringes stack to 2 per inventory slot.
Is a syringe or a Large Medkit better?
The syringe is better in a fight because 15 HP lands instantly. The Large Medkit heals more in total (110 HP against 35) and can revive downed players, but most of its healing comes slowly.
How many syringes make a Large Medkit?
2 Medical Syringes plus 10 Low Grade Fuel make 1 Large Medkit at a Workbench 2. That trade turns 70 HP of syringes into 110 HP of medkit.
Where do you find medical syringes in Rust?
Mostly from scientists. Heavy Scientists drop 1 to 4 with an 88.9% chance, and most monument scientists drop 1 to 2 about a third of the time. Medical crates (25%) and brown medical crates (10%) also have them.
