Handmade Shell Rust: Recipe, Damage, Sulfur Cost & Shotgun Trap Ammo (2026)

Rust ammo guide, updated October 30, 2026

The Handmade Shell is the first shotgun shell every Rust player can make. You know the blueprint the moment you spawn, it needs no workbench, and it costs nothing but stones and gun powder. It feeds the Eoka on wipe day, it is the only ammo a Shotgun Trap will take, and it does more damage per sulfur than any other 12 gauge shell in the game.

This handmade shell Rust guide covers the exact recipe, what a stack and a full Shotgun Trap cost in sulfur, the damage it does in all six shotguns, how it compares with buckshot, slugs and incendiary shells, where to loot it, and how to get the most out of a shell that falls apart past a few metres.

TL;DR Craft 2 Handmade Shells from 5 stones and 5 gun powder with no workbench (3 seconds, 1 second at any workbench). It is a default blueprint, so you never research it to use it. That is 5 sulfur per shell and 320 sulfur for a stack of 64. Each shell fires 20 pellets of 9 damage at 100 m/s, up to 180 damage point blank from the Eoka, Waterpipe, Double Barrel and Pump (144 in the M4, 136 in the Spas-12). It is the only ammo the Shotgun Trap accepts, and the only loot sources are Christmas stockings, presents and gingerbread dungeons.

What Is the Handmade Shell in Rust?

In the game files the Handmade Shell is ammo.handmade.shell with item ID 588596902. It stacks to 64 and despawns only 5 minutes after it hits the ground, much faster than most items, so pick up dropped shells quickly. Look up any other short name in our Rust item IDs list.

It is the cheap member of the 12 gauge family, next to 12 Gauge Buckshot, the 12 Gauge Slug and the 12 Gauge Incendiary Shell. All four fit the same shotguns, but the Handmade Shell is the only one you can craft without a workbench, and the only one a Shotgun Trap will load. Each shell throws a wide spread of slow pellets, so it hits hard at arm’s length and barely tickles at range. For every other round in the game, see our full Rust ammo chart.

How to Craft Handmade Shells in Rust

Rust Handmade Shell recipe: 5 stones plus 5 gun powder makes 2 handmade shells with no workbench in 3 seconds, 1 second at any workbench, default blueprint known by everyone
5 stones and 5 gun powder make 2 shells, straight from your inventory.
  1. Skip the blueprint. The Handmade Shell is a default blueprint, so it is in your crafting menu from your first spawn. Researching one only gives you a physical blueprint, which you would need for an Industrial Crafter.
  2. Collect stones. Hit any stone node or pick up loose stones. You need 5 stones per craft of 2.
  3. Make gun powder. 30 charcoal and 20 sulfur make 10 gun powder at a Workbench 1 or a Mixing Table. You need 5 per craft.
  4. Craft in bulk. Type a number in the crafting menu. 32 crafts make a full stack of 64. Stand next to any workbench and each craft drops from 3 seconds to 1.

How Much Sulfur Does a Handmade Shell Cost?

Rust handmade shell cost for one stack of 64: 320 sulfur, 480 charcoal, 160 stones and 160 gun powder, compared with 640 sulfur for a buckshot stack and 1,280 for incendiary shells, and 1,920 sulfur to fill a Shotgun Trap with 384 shells
A stack of 64 costs 320 sulfur. A full Shotgun Trap costs 1,920.

Gun powder is 2 sulfur and 3 charcoal per unit, so the 5 gun powder in one craft is 10 sulfur and 15 charcoal. Split over 2 shells, each Handmade Shell costs 5 sulfur, 7.5 charcoal and 2.5 stones. No metal fragments at all, which is why it is the go-to shell before you have a furnace running full time.

What Guns Use Handmade Shells in Rust?

Rust guns that fire handmade shells with max damage per shell: Eoka Pistol 180, Waterpipe Shotgun 180, Double Barrel 180, Pump Shotgun 180, M4 Shotgun 144, Spas-12 136, plus the Shotgun Trap which takes only handmade shells, about 45 shells for a closed wooden door, and a x1.2 headshot multiplier
Every shotgun takes it. Max damage assumes all 20 pellets land.

Damage per pellet comes from the Facepunch wiki ammo tables. Max damage is that number times 20 pellets, which only happens when you are close enough for the whole spread to land on the target. A few metres out, most of the pellets miss.

The M4 and Spas-12 are semi-automatic endgame shotguns, and wasting their magazines on Handmade Shells throws away most of their power. The shell really belongs in the cheap guns: the Eoka and Waterpipe on wipe day, and the Double Barrel once you have a Workbench 1. Comparing every gun in the game? Our Rust best weapons tier list ranks them all.

Handmade Shell vs Buckshot, Slug and Incendiary

Rust 12 gauge shells compared: Handmade Shell 180 max damage for 5 sulfur, 36 damage per sulfur, no workbench; 12 Gauge Buckshot 210 for 10 sulfur, 21 per sulfur, Workbench 2; 12 Gauge Slug 80 for 10 sulfur, 8 per sulfur; Incendiary Shell 150 for 20 sulfur, 7.5 per sulfur
The cheapest shell also gives the most damage per sulfur, as long as you are close.

Here is a number most guides skip: divide each shell’s max damage by its sulfur cost. The Handmade Shell gives about 36 damage per sulfur, close to double what buckshot gives you. The catch is range and speed. Its pellets fly at 100 m/s and spread wide, so that 180 only exists at point blank, while buckshot keeps its punch a few metres further out.

Which one to load Use Handmade Shells for farming, raiding wooden doors and defending a base where fights happen inside doorways. Switch to buckshot for real player fights once you have a Workbench 2, because the extra 30 damage and tighter, faster pellets win the trades that matter. Keep slugs for anything past 10 metres.

Handmade Shells and the Shotgun Trap

Rust Shotgun Trap and handmade shells: the trap takes only handmade shells, 64 per slot, 384 in all 6 slots, a full load costs 1,920 sulfur and 960 stones, it shoots anyone not authorized on the tool cupboard and needs no power, unlike the auto turret
The Shotgun Trap loads Handmade Shells and nothing else.

The Shotgun Trap is a Workbench 1 base defence that fires at anyone not authorized on your Tool Cupboard. It will not accept buckshot, slugs or incendiary shells, only Handmade Shells, and it holds 6 stacks of 64 for 384 shells.

Filling one trap from empty costs 1,920 sulfur, 2,880 charcoal and 960 stones. That sounds like a lot, but a trap only burns shells when someone walks into it, so most traps run for days on a single stack. Unlike an auto turret, it needs no power and no gun, which makes it the cheapest way to cover a doorway or an airlock.

Where to Find Handmade Shells in Rust

Where to find handmade shells in Rust: large stocking 17.5 percent for 8 to 36 shells, small stocking 11.2 percent for 8 to 24, medium present with a Waterpipe and 10 shells 10.6 percent, small present with an Eoka and shells 6.5 percent, gingerbread dungeons 10 shells 10.6 percent, and recycling returns gun powder and stones
Every loot source is a Christmas item. The rest of the year you craft them.

Handmade Shells do not spawn in normal crates, barrels or on scientists. The current Facepunch wiki loot tables only list seasonal Christmas sources, plus the bundles in our Rust presents guide:

SourceAmountChance
Large Stocking8 to 3617.5%
Small Stocking8 to 2411.2%
Medium Present (with a Waterpipe Shotgun)1010.6%
Gingerbread Dungeon crates1010.6%
Small Present (with an Eoka Pistol)a few6.5%

Since the shell is this cheap, crafting is faster than hunting for it anyway. For what every other crate and barrel holds, see our Rust loot tables.

Can You Recycle Handmade Shells?

Yes. A recycler turns each Handmade Shell into 1 gun powder and 1 stone, plus a 50% chance of one more of each. A safe zone recycler gives 1 gun powder and 1 stone. That is about 60% of the 2.5 gun powder that went into each shell, so it only makes sense for shells you will never fire, like the leftovers after you upgrade to buckshot.

Handmade Shell Tips

Rust handmade shell tips: get inside 5 metres because pellets drop off fast, craft an Eoka on wipe day for 75 wood and 30 frags, about 45 shells break a closed wooden door, fill Shotgun Traps with 384 shells, use the Double Barrel for two fast shells, and switch to buckshot at Workbench 2
Cheap shells win fights at arm’s length.
  • Get close. Inside about 5 metres most of the 20 pellets land. Past 10, you are wasting shells.
  • Pair it with an Eoka on wipe day. 75 wood and 30 metal fragments for the gun, stones and gun powder for the ammo, and no workbench for either.
  • Eoka a wooden door. Roughly 45 Handmade Shells break a closed wooden door, about 225 sulfur, far less than any explosive. Open doors take about 50% more, so keep it shut. Check other targets in our eco raid calculator.
  • Keep a Shotgun Trap stack in every base. Top traps up when you pass them, the same way you refill a furnace.
  • The Double Barrel is the best Handmade Shell gun. Two shells back to back is 360 potential damage before a reload.
  • Switch at Workbench 2. Once buckshot is on your bench, save Handmade Shells for traps, farming and door raids.
