Rust Workbench Level 1: Cost, Tech Tree, Unlocks & All 3 Workbenches (2026)

Rust crafting guide, 2026

The Workbench Level 1 is the first crafting bench every Rust player builds, usually within the first ten minutes of a wipe. Without it you are stuck with stone tools, a bow and wooden armor. With it you open the first branch of the tech tree and can craft the revolver, the double barrel shotgun, satchel charges, sheet metal doors and much more.

This Rust workbench guide covers the exact 2026 craft cost of the Workbench Level 1, how it compares with the Workbench 2 and 3, what the Workbench 1 tech tree costs in scrap, what you can craft at it, the new workbench upgrades, how much it takes to destroy, and where to put it in your base.

TL;DR A Workbench Level 1 costs 500 wood and 100 metal fragments. You craft it by hand in 30 seconds, no bench needed, and every player knows the recipe from spawn. There is no scrap and no blueprint fragment in the recipe. It opens the Workbench 1 tech tree (about 125 nodes and roughly 3,000 scrap for all of it), has 500 HP (2 C4 or about 4 rockets) and recycles into 300 wood and 60 metal fragments.
Rust Workbench Level 1 at a glance: 500 wood and 100 metal fragments, crafted by hand in 30 seconds, blueprint known by default, about 3,000 scrap for the full Workbench 1 tech tree, 500 HP and 2 C4 to destroy

What Is the Workbench in Rust?

A workbench is a deployable crafting station. Many recipes in Rust are locked to a workbench level: you can only craft them while you stand close to a bench of that level or higher. There are three numbered benches, and the Workbench Level 1 is the cheapest and the first one you need.

The Workbench 1 does two jobs. It lets you craft every item that needs workbench level 1, and it opens the Workbench 1 branch of the Rust tech tree, where you spend scrap to learn blueprints. It is also the bench you craft the Workbench Level 2 at, which in turn crafts the Workbench Level 3.

The crafting range is short. You have to stand close to the bench, inside the same building, for its level to count. A higher bench always counts as every lower one, so a Workbench 3 also does the job of a Workbench 1.

How to Craft a Workbench Level 1

How to craft a Workbench Level 1 in Rust: 500 wood and 100 metal fragments, no workbench needed, 30 second craft, smelt metal ore in a furnace for the fragments, no scrap and no blueprint fragments
The cheapest bench in the game.
  1. Chop 500 wood. Two or three trees with a stone hatchet, or a few minutes of picking up wood piles near the beach.
  2. Get 100 metal fragments. Hit one metal node for metal ore and smelt it in a furnace: each metal ore becomes one fragment. You can also pick up fragments from barrels and crates, or recycle components. Our metal fragments guide covers every source.
  3. Craft it anywhere. Open your crafting menu, find Workbench Level 1 under Items and craft it. It takes 30 seconds and needs no bench, because the recipe is known by every player from spawn.
  4. Place it inside your base. Put it on a foundation or floor inside your walls, ideally in a room with your tool cupboard.
Scrap history Older guides list 50 scrap in the Workbench 1 recipe. The current recipe has none. The Pivot or Die update in November 2025 removed scrap from all workbench recipes, and blueprint fragments are only needed for the Workbench 2 and 3.

Workbench 1 vs 2 vs 3

Rust workbench tiers compared: Workbench 1 costs 500 wood and 100 metal fragments with no blueprint fragments, Workbench 2 costs 500 frags, 20 HQM and 5 Basic Blueprint Fragments, Workbench 3 costs 1,000 frags, 100 HQM and 5 Advanced Blueprint Fragments
Each bench is crafted at the one before it.
BenchCraft costCrafted atFull tech treeHealth
Workbench 1500 wood, 100 metal fragmentsBy hand, 30 s~3,000 scrap, ~125 nodes500 HP
Workbench 2500 metal fragments, 20 HQM, 5 Basic Blueprint FragmentsWorkbench 1, 45 s~5,520 scrap, ~133 nodes500 HP
Workbench 31,000 metal fragments, 100 HQM, 5 Advanced Blueprint FragmentsWorkbench 2, 60 s~2,300 scrap, ~27 nodes750 HP

The jump from Workbench 1 to 2 is the first real wall of a wipe, because the Basic Blueprint Fragments come from green and blue keycard rooms at monuments. The Workbench 1 has no such gate, which is why every base, from a solo 2×1 to a clan compound, starts with one.

Higher benches also craft lower tier recipes faster. Workbench 1 recipes take roughly half their normal time at a Workbench 2, which matters when you are crafting ammo and building parts in bulk.

The Workbench 1 Tech Tree

Rust Workbench 1 tech tree path costs from an empty tree: satchel charge 510 scrap, double barrel shotgun 405 scrap, node prices 15 to 120 scrap by rarity, Salvage upgrade 20% off, whole Workbench 1 tree about 3,000 scrap, all three trees about 10,820 scrap
You pay for every node on the path, not just the one you want.

Interact with the bench and open the tech tree to see the Workbench 1 branch. Each node is a blueprint. You can only unlock a node when the one before it is unlocked, so the real price of an item is the whole path to it.

Since the Pivot or Die update, every node costs the same as researching that item: 15 scrap for common items, 30 for uncommon, 60 for rare and 120 for very rare. There is no extra tech tree tax any more.

TargetNode pricePath from an empty tree
Satchel Charge60 scrapabout 510 scrap
Double Barrel Shotgun60 scrapabout 405 scrap
Biofuel Generator–about 105 scrap
Whole Workbench 1 tree–about 3,000 scrap (about 125 nodes)
All three trees–about 10,820 scrap

If you loot an item, putting it in a research table costs only the single node price, so a looted double barrel is 60 scrap instead of 405. Our tech tree guide has the full price list and the best unlock order, and the blueprints guide explains how research and the tree fit together.

What You Can Craft at a Workbench Level 1

What you craft at a Workbench Level 1 in Rust: revolver, double barrel shotgun, waterpipe shotgun, crossbow, satchel charge, beancan grenade, sheet metal door and mixing table
The early wipe kit all comes from the Workbench 1.

The Workbench 1 tier covers almost everything you need in the first hours of a wipe:

Most of these still need their blueprint first, from the tech tree or a research table. The bench only gives you the crafting tier.

Workbench Upgrades

Rust workbench upgrades: Salvage gives 20% off tech tree unlocks, Prototype unlocks any node directly at double price, plus Reinforced, Range, Efficiency, Recycle Bin, Comfort and Defensive upgrades found in loot
Upgrades come from loot and slot into the bench.

The May 2026 update added workbench upgrades: loot items you slot into a bench to change how it works. They cannot be crafted, and each bench takes one of each kind.

  • Salvage: 20% off tech tree unlocks at that bench. On the 3,000 scrap Workbench 1 tree that is worth a lot early in a wipe.
  • Prototype: unlock any node directly, without the path, for double its price.
  • Reinforced: makes the bench much tougher against explosives.
  • Range, Efficiency, Recycle Bin, Comfort, Defensive: a bigger crafting radius, a chance of bonus items, a refund of up to 10% of crafting costs, comfort around the bench, and armor slots on crafted clothing.

How to Destroy and Recycle a Workbench Level 1

Destroy and recycle a Workbench Level 1 in Rust: 500 HP, 2 C4 or about 4 rockets to destroy, recycles into 300 wood and 60 metal fragments (200 and 40 at a safe zone recycler), and a new one crafts in 30 seconds
Cheap to lose, but it stops your crafting until you replace it.

A Workbench Level 1 has 500 HP, the same as a Workbench 2. Raiders who reach it can remove it with 2 C4 or about 4 rockets, but nobody spends that much on a bench that costs 600 resources. It usually dies to a stray explosion or gets left alone.

Recycling one gives back 300 wood and 60 metal fragments at a monument recycler, or 200 wood and 40 fragments at a safe zone recycler like the one at Outpost. If you outgrow it, the higher bench already covers Workbench 1 recipes, so a spare Workbench 1 is fine to recycle.

Workbench Level 1 Tips

Workbench Level 1 tips in Rust: craft it early for 500 wood and 100 metal fragments, place it inside the base next to the tool cupboard, unlock a revolver or double barrel first, and path to satchel charges for 510 scrap
The first hour of a wipe, sorted.
  • Craft it in your first base run. 500 wood and one metal node is all it takes. Smelt the ore while you build.
  • Put it inside, next to the TC. A bench outside your walls lets anyone craft at it and gives away where you live.
  • Get a gun before anything else. A revolver or double barrel turns a fresh spawn into a real fighter. Research a looted one if you find it, it is far cheaper than the path.
  • Path to satchels next. At about 510 scrap the satchel is the cheapest way to start raiding other wood and stone bases.
  • Plan the Workbench 2. Once your base is safe, run a green and a blue card room for the 5 Basic Blueprint Fragments the next bench needs. Our Workbench Level 2 guide has the routes.
  • Check the wipe. Benches, blueprints and scrap all reset on a blueprint wipe. See when the next force wipe is before you spend big on the tree late in the month.

Rust Workbench Level 1 FAQ

How much does a Workbench Level 1 cost in Rust?

A Workbench Level 1 costs 500 wood and 100 metal fragments. You craft it by hand in 30 seconds, without any other workbench, and the blueprint is known by default.

Does the Workbench Level 1 cost scrap?

No. Older guides list 50 scrap, but the current recipe is only 500 wood and 100 metal fragments. The Pivot or Die update in November 2025 removed scrap from all workbench recipes.

Do you need a workbench to craft a Workbench Level 1?

No. The Workbench Level 1 is crafted by hand from your inventory. You then need it to craft the Workbench Level 2, and the Workbench 2 to craft the Workbench Level 3.

How much scrap is the Workbench 1 tech tree?

The full Workbench 1 tech tree costs about 3,000 scrap across roughly 125 nodes. Each node costs 15, 30, 60 or 120 scrap depending on the item’s rarity, and you have to unlock every node on the path to the item you want.

What can you craft at a Workbench Level 1?

The Workbench Level 1 crafts the revolver, double barrel shotgun, waterpipe shotgun, crossbow, beancan grenades, satchel charges, sheet metal doors, metal window bars, the mixing table and many other early wipe items, once you have their blueprints.

How many C4 does it take to destroy a Workbench Level 1?

A Workbench Level 1 has 500 HP, so it takes 2 C4 or about 4 rockets to destroy.

What do you get for recycling a Workbench Level 1?

A monument recycler gives 300 wood and 60 metal fragments. A safe zone recycler gives 200 wood and 40 metal fragments.

What is the Workbench Level 1 item ID?

The Workbench Level 1 shortname is workbench1 and its item ID is 1524187186.
