Rust Rock: Craft Cost, Damage, Gather Rates, Throwing & Skins (2026)

Rust tools guide, 2026

The Rock is the first thing in your hands every time you wake up in Rust. It is the most basic melee weapon and gathering tool in the game: it chops trees, mines nodes, harvests animals, breaks barrels and, in a pinch, wins a fight against another fresh spawn. It is also the slowest tool you will ever use, which is why getting off it fast is the first real goal of every wipe.

This Rust rock guide covers the craft cost, the damage it does to players, how much wood and ore it gathers compared with stone tools, how to throw it, the tool upgrade path, what the rock is still good for later in a wipe, and every rock skin.

TL;DR The Rock costs 10 stones, crafts in 5 seconds with no workbench, and every player knows the recipe. You spawn with a rock and a torch. It does 10 melee damage (20 on a headshot), gathers 10 wood and 5 ore per hit, and recycles into 6 stones (4 at a safe zone). A stone hatchet doubles your wood per hit and a stone pickaxe more than triples your ore, so swap as soon as you have 200 wood and 100 stones.

What Is the Rock in Rust?

The Rock is a handheld tool and melee weapon. The in-game description calls it “the most basic melee weapon and gathering tool”, and that is exactly what it is. Every new character and every respawn starts with a Rock in the first hotbar slot and a Torch in the second, plus nothing else. If you die and respawn on the beach, you get a fresh rock and torch again.

There is no workbench, no blueprint and no scrap involved. You can craft a new one from 10 stones in 5 seconds anywhere on the map, so losing a rock never matters. What matters is how slow it is. A rock does the same job as a jackhammer or a chainsaw, but at a fraction of the speed and while leaving a big part of every tree and node behind.

This page is about the Rock tool. The resource you craft it from, Stones, is a separate item that you mine from stone nodes, pick up off the ground or run through a stone quarry.

How to Craft a Rock in Rust

How to craft a Rock in Rust: 10 stones make 1 rock, 5 second craft, no workbench needed, stack size 1, despawns after 5 minutes
The cheapest tool in the game.
  1. Get 10 stones. Pick up the small loose stones lying on the ground, which give a handful each, or hit any stone node with another tool.
  2. Open your crafting menu. The Rock is under Tools and is known from spawn, so there is nothing to unlock.
  3. Craft it. It takes 5 seconds and lands straight in your inventory.
Tip: You almost never need to craft a rock. You spawn with one, and by the time you have lost it you should already be on stone tools. The one time it is worth crafting a spare is when you go out naked to farm and do not want to lose your stone hatchet.

Rock Damage: Melee and Throwing

Rust rock damage: 10 per melee hit, 20 on a headshot so 5 headshots kill a naked player, blunt damage barely scratches doors, right click throws it for about 10 damage, a bow or spear beats it
Ten damage a hit, double on the head.

A rock hit does 10 blunt damage. A naked player has 100 HP, so it takes about 10 body hits or 5 headshots to kill someone with nothing on. Any clothing cuts that down further: even a burlap shirt or a hide poncho adds melee protection, and wood armor turns a rock fight into a very long one.

Throwing. Hold right click to wind up and release to throw the rock a short distance. A thrown rock does roughly the same 10 damage, with a 1.5x headshot bonus, but you then have to walk over and pick it up again. It is most useful for finishing a wounded player who is running away, or for knocking an item off a ledge you cannot reach.

What beats a rock. Almost everything. A wooden spear costs only 300 wood and outranges you, a hunting bow kills from a distance, and the Eoka is the next rung up the ladder. Rock fights are won by whoever lands the first two or three hits, so swing early and aim for the head.

Because the rock’s damage is blunt, it barely scratches doors, walls and other building pieces. It can break twig in a few swings, but there is no realistic way to raid with a rock. For that you need the tools on our Rust raid calculator.

Rock Gather Rates vs Stone Tools

Rust rock vs stone tools: rock gathers 10 wood and 5 ore per hit, stone hatchet 20 wood per hit, stone pickaxe 16 ore per hit, both stone tools cost 200 wood and 100 stones, bone club 9 wood per hit
Half the wood and a third of the ore of stone tools.
ToolCostWood per hitOre per hit
Rock10 stones105
Stone Hatchet200 wood, 100 stones20Low
Stone Pickaxe200 wood, 100 stonesLow16
Bone Club20 bone fragments94

The rock is an all-rounder, which means it is bad at everything. A stone hatchet pulls twice the wood per swing and a stone pickaxe more than three times the ore. Better tools also get more out of each node in total. A full stone node gives about 375 stones with a rock, about 794 with a stone pickaxe and the full 1,000 with a metal pickaxe or better (see our Rust stones guide). The same goes for metal ore and sulfur: a rock leaves most of the node in the ground.

Always aim for the glowing spot. Every node shows a bright X on its surface, and hitting it gives bonus damage, so the node breaks in fewer swings. The spot moves after each hit, so follow it around the rock.

For animals and players, the rock harvests meat, fat, bone and cloth, but a bone knife pulls a lot more from every body.

Rust Tool Upgrade Path

Rust tool upgrade path: rock for 10 stones, then stone tools for 200 wood and 100 stones with no bench, metal tools at Workbench 1, salvaged tools at Workbench 2, then the chainsaw and jackhammer
Each step gathers faster and leaves less behind.
  1. Rock. Your spawn tool. Use it for about the first five minutes.
  2. Stone Hatchet and Stone Pickaxe. 200 wood and 100 stones each, no workbench. These are the first two things to craft on a fresh spawn.
  3. Hatchet and Pickaxe. 100 wood plus 75 or 125 metal fragments at a Workbench Level 1. Smelt your first metal fragments and you are there.
  4. Salvaged Axe and Salvaged Icepick. 1 metal pipe and 5 metal blades each at a Workbench Level 2. The fastest hand tools in the game.
  5. Chainsaw and Jackhammer. The chainsaw crafts at a Workbench 2 and burns low grade fuel. The jackhammer comes from loot only.

What the Rock Is Good For

What the rock is good for in Rust: chopping trees, mining stone metal and sulfur nodes, harvesting bodies, breaking barrels, opening presents, digging up metal detector flags, breaking twig and hitting sleepers
Keep one in your hotbar even later in a wipe.

Once you have better tools, the rock is still handy for jobs where you do not want to risk anything valuable:

  • Barrel runs. Roadside barrels break in a couple of swings, and a rock is free to lose. See our Rust scrap guide for the best routes.
  • Opening presents. Gift boxes have only 30 HP, so a rock opens them fast. Our Rust presents guide covers the loot.
  • Metal detector flags. Any melee tool digs up a flag in 3 hits, and the rock works fine. See the metal detector guide.
  • Naked farming trips. If you get killed, you lose 10 stones instead of a salvaged axe.
  • Sleepers and twig. A rock is enough to finish a sleeping player outside a base or to break freshly placed twig.

Rust Rock Skins

Rust rock skins: the default Rock, the Jungle Rock from the Jungle Pack DLC and the Skull from the 2021 Halloween item store, all with the same stats
Skins change the model, not the stats.

The rock has two official reskins that are their own items in the game files, plus a long list of community workshop skins:

  • Jungle Rock. A carved stone idol face that came with the Jungle Pack DLC, released alongside the jungle biome update in 2025.
  • Skull. A human skull added to the item store for Halloween 2021. Facepunch’s joke at the time was that skulls gather resources just as well as rocks do.

A rock skin changes only how the tool looks in your hand. Damage, gather rate and range are identical. Our Rust skins guide explains how skins work, and the Rust item store guide covers what is on sale each week.

Rock Tips for a Fresh Spawn

Rust rock tips: farm 200 stones first for two stone tools, craft a wooden spear for 300 wood, hit the bright spot on every node, keep a spare rock for 10 stones
Make the first ten minutes count.
  • Farm stone first. Head for the nearest stone node and pick up loose stones on the way. 200 stones and 400 wood gets you both stone tools.
  • Craft a spear early. A wooden spear costs 300 wood and wins most rock fights.
  • Always hit the bright spot. It is the single biggest speed boost a rock has.
  • Keep the torch. It lights the way at night, and it can hit players and break barrels too.
  • Stay away from monuments. A naked player with a rock is free loot for anyone with a gun. Build a small base first, then see when the next force wipe is so you know how long you have.

Rust Rock FAQ

How do you craft a rock in Rust?

Open your crafting menu and craft the Rock from 10 stones. It takes 5 seconds, needs no workbench and the blueprint is known by default.

Do you spawn with a rock in Rust?

Yes. Every new character and every respawn starts with a Rock and a Torch in the hotbar.

How much damage does a rock do in Rust?

A rock does 10 blunt damage per melee hit and 20 on a headshot, so it takes about 10 body hits or 5 headshots to kill a naked player. A thrown rock does about 10 damage with a 1.5x headshot bonus.

Can you throw a rock in Rust?

Yes. Hold right click to wind up and release to throw the rock a short distance. You have to pick it up again afterwards.

Is a rock or a stone hatchet better for wood?

The stone hatchet. It gathers 20 wood per hit against the rock’s 10. A stone pickaxe likewise gathers about 16 ore per hit against the rock’s 5. Both stone tools cost 200 wood and 100 stones.

What do you get for recycling a rock?

A monument recycler gives 6 stones and a safe zone recycler gives 4 stones. It is rarely worth the trip.

Are there rock skins in Rust?

Yes. The Jungle Rock comes with the Jungle Pack DLC and the Skull was a Halloween 2021 store item, plus many community workshop skins. Skins do not change the rock’s stats.

What is the rock item ID in Rust?
