Rust Pants: Stats, Craft Cost, Blueprint & Best Leg Armor (2026)

Rust clothing guide, 2026

Most fights in Rust end with shots to the body, and your legs take a big share of them. Pants are the cheapest way to make those hits hurt less: a 40 cloth under-layer that sits under any leg armor and stacks with it.

This Rust pants guide covers the craft cost and blueprint, the exact protection numbers, how pants compare to shorts, BDU pants, burlap trousers and hide pants, what to wear over them, where to find them, and the loadouts that use them best.

TL;DR Pants cost 40 cloth and 1 sewing kit at a Workbench 1 (30 seconds, 15 at a Workbench 2). The blueprint costs 30 scrap at a research table or on the Workbench 1 tech tree. They give 15% projectile, 15% melee, 8% cold, 5% radiation and 3% bite protection on your legs. Only loot-only BDU pants (17% bullets) beat them as an under-layer. Wear them under a Road Sign Kilt and the two stack. A recycler gives back 24 cloth and a 60% chance of the sewing kit.
Rust pants at a glance: crafted at Workbench 1 for 40 cloth and 1 sewing kit, 30 scrap blueprint, 15% projectile and 15% melee protection plus 8% cold, stacks with a Road Sign Kilt, recycles to 24 cloth

What Are Pants in Rust?

Pants are a cloth clothing item for the legs. The game calls them a highly capable undergarment that gives all round protection from damage and the elements, and that is exactly how players use them: as the soft layer that goes under your leg armor.

Rust splits every body part into two clothing layers. On the legs, the under-layer is pants, shorts, BDU pants, burlap trousers or hide pants, and the outer layer is leg armor such as the Road Sign Kilt or Heavy Plate Pants. You can wear one of each, and their protection adds up. That is why our Rust clothing guide calls the hoodie and pants the best craftable under-layers.

Protection only counts where you are hit. Pants do nothing for a headshot, but every bullet, arrow or melee swing that lands on your legs is cut by 15%.

How to Craft Pants in Rust

How to craft pants in Rust: 40 cloth plus 1 sewing kit at a Workbench 1 makes 1 pair of pants; research table 30 scrap, Workbench 1 tech tree 30 scrap node, 30 second craft or 15 seconds at Workbench 2
One craft, two ingredients.
  1. Get the blueprint. Put a pair of pants in a research table with 30 scrap, or unlock the pants node on the Workbench 1 branch of the tech tree for 30 scrap.
  2. Collect the materials. 40 cloth from hemp, and 1 sewing kit from crates, barrels or recycling.
  3. Craft at a Workbench 1. It takes 30 seconds, or 15 seconds near a Workbench 2 or 3.

The cloth is easy. The sewing kit is what limits you early on, because you can only craft one at a Workbench 3 (20 cloth and 3 rope) and every serious armor piece needs kits too. A pair of pants needs just one, which makes it one of the best uses of a kit on wipe day.

Tip Shorts, burlap trousers and hide pants all craft with no workbench at all. If you do not have a Workbench 1 yet, wear those first and swap to pants once the bench is down.

Rust Pants Protection

Rust pants protection stats: 15% projectile, 15% melee, 8% cold, 5% radiation and 3% bite protection on the legs
Five protection values, all on the legs.

Pants give 15% projectile and 15% melee protection, half again as much as any no-workbench leg item. They also add 8% cold, which helps offset the cold penalty of metal armor, plus a little radiation and bite protection.

They are not radiation gear. For monuments with real radiation, a hazmat suit replaces your whole outfit, pants included.

Pants vs Shorts, BDU Pants, Burlap and Hide

Every pair of pants in Rust compared: Pants 15% bullet, 15% melee, 8% cold at Workbench 1; BDU Pants 17%, 15%, 6% cold from loot; Shorts 10%, 10%, 7% with no workbench; Burlap Trousers 10%, 10%, 7% with no workbench; Hide Pants 10%, 10%, 4% with no workbench
Every leg under-layer side by side.

BDU Pants17%15%3%5%6%Loot only (elite and locked crates)

Burlap Trousers10%10%3%2%7%20 cloth, no workbench
Hide Pants10%10%8%2%4%10 leather, no workbench

Pants win every craftable comparison. The only better leg under-layer is the BDU pants from the June 2026 Built Different update, which add 2% more bullet protection but trade away 2% cold and cannot be crafted or researched. If you loot a pair, wear them. If not, pants are only 2% behind.

What to Wear Over Your Pants

Leg armor to wear over Rust pants: Wood Armor Pants 10% bullet with no workbench, Road Sign Kilt 20% bullet at Workbench 2 with no HQM, Ballistic Leg Armour 30% bullet from loot, Heavy Plate Pants 75% bullet at Workbench 2 but slow and cold
Pants go under every one of these.

Pants are the under-layer, so the real question is what goes on top. Every option below stacks with pants.

Leg armorBulletMeleeRecipeBest for
Wood Armor Pants10%40%150 wood, 15 cloth, no workbenchWipe day melee fights
Road Sign Kilt20%25%10 leather, 1 road sign, 2 sewing kits, WB2Everyday PvP
Ballistic Leg Armour30%40%Loot onlyWhen you find it
Heavy Plate Pants75%70%4 HQM, 1 sheet metal, WB2Holding a base during a raid

The Road Sign Kilt is the standard pick. It is light, needs no high quality metal and, with pants under it, covers your legs nearly as well as the meta chest piece covers your body. That is the leg half of the classic Metal Facemask, Metal Chest Plate and Road Sign Kilt kit in our Rust armor guide.

Watch out Heavy Plate Pants have huge protection but slow you down and carry a big cold penalty. They are for holding a compound, not for roaming. Pants underneath help with the cold.

Pants cannot take armor inserts. Only armor pieces like the kilt roll insert slots, which our armor inserts guide covers.

How to Get Pants in Rust

How to get pants in Rust: craft them for 40 cloth and 1 sewing kit at Workbench 1, learn the blueprint for 30 scrap, find them in airdrops and tool crates, get sewing kits from crates and barrels, recycle spares for 24 cloth and maybe a sewing kit, and farm hemp for cloth
Craft, loot or recycle.
  • Craft them. The reliable route once you have the blueprint and a Workbench 1.
  • Loot them. Pants are a regular drop in supply drops and tool crates, so you often find a pair before you can craft one.
  • Buy them. Vending machines at Outpost and player shops often sell clothing for scrap or cloth.
  • Recycle spares. A recycler turns a pair into 24 cloth with a 60% chance of the sewing kit back. Spare loot pants are a cheap source of kits.

Pants also come in many skins, from the Item Store and the Steam market. Skins change only the look, never the protection. See our Rust skins guide.

Best Pants Loadouts

Best pants loadouts in Rust: wipe day burlap trousers or hide pants with no workbench; PvP meta pants plus Road Sign Kilt for 15% plus 20% bullet protection with no HQM; base defence pants plus Heavy Plate Pants for 15% plus 75% but slow and cold
Three leg setups from wipe day to late wipe.

The head of that meta kit is the Metal Facemask. Whatever you wear on top, keep pants underneath.

Rust Pants Tips

Rust pants tips: always wear them for 15% protection at 40 cloth, add a Road Sign Kilt because the two stack, save sewing kits since pants need only one, use the 8% cold in the snow biome, swap to BDU pants for 17% if you loot them, and match them with a hoodie
Small habits that make 40 cloth count.
  • Never run bare legs. 15% less damage on every leg hit for 40 cloth is the cheapest protection in the game.
  • Add a kilt as soon as you can. Pants and a Road Sign Kilt stack, and that pair is the meta for a reason.
  • Spend sewing kits wisely. Pants need 1, the kilt needs 2, and a hoodie needs 1. Plan your kits before you craft capes or cosmetics.
  • Use them for cold. 8% cold protection matters in the snow biome and around the Arctic Research Base.
  • Swap to BDU pants if you loot them. 17% bullets beats 15%.
  • Pair them with a hoodie. The hoodie does the same job for your chest and arms.
  • Remember the wipe. Clothing, blueprints and the base you keep it in all reset. Check when the next force wipe is.
