M249 Rust: How to Get It, Stats & Drop Chance

LMG guide, updated 2026

The M249 is the gun everyone in Rust wants and almost nobody gets. It hits harder than an AK, fires faster than an AK, and carries a 100 round belt while an AK carries 30. There is exactly one catch, and it is a big one: you cannot craft it, you cannot research it, and it is not on the tech tree. The only way to hold an M249 in Rust is to take one off something that was trying to kill you.

That makes it the strangest weapon in the game to write about. Every other gun has a shopping list. This one has odds. There are two sources in the entire game, both of them events, and both of them fights you have to win before you even get to roll the dice. Most players go whole wipes without seeing one.

This M249 Rust guide covers all of it: the real stats, both drop sources with their actual percentages, the cumulative odds so you know how many kills a hunt really takes, the ammo and attachments that suit it, why it has a recoil quirk no other rifle has, how it performs in an auto turret, and what the Power Trip update from 6 August 2026 quietly did to what a spare M249 is worth. Every number here is checked against the Facepunch wiki, RustClash, RustHelp and Corrosion Hour, not guessed.

TL;DR The M249 in Rust does 65 damage a shot at 500 RPM with a 100 round magazine, the biggest in the game, for a firing DPS of 541.7. It is not craftable and not researchable, full stop. It drops from exactly two places: Helicopter Crates at 10% (the Patrol Helicopter drops 4, so about a 34% chance per heli) and APC Crates at 8.3% (Bradley drops 3, so about 23% per Bradley). Because Bradley comes back every 60 minutes and the heli only spawns every 2 to 4 hours, Bradley is the faster farm. It fires all four 5.56 types, takes almost every attachment, and has a movement recoil penalty that has been in the game since 2015, so you shoot it standing still. Since Power Trip it recycles for 30 HQM in the new red Power Plant recycler versus 16 in a safe zone. Like everything else, it goes away on the force wipe.

What Is the M249 in Rust?

The M249 is a belt fed light machine gun and the highest damage 5.56 weapon in Rust. Facepunch describes it in the game files as a “high damage, high rate of fire, belt fed light machine gun”, which for once is not marketing. At 65 damage a shot it beats the Assault Rifle by 30%, and at 500 rounds per minute it beats the AK’s 450 too. Nothing else in the game combines those two numbers.

It has been in Rust since Devblog 86 on 12 November 2015, where Facepunch introduced it with a line that still describes it perfectly: “It has a 100 round magazine, making enemy suppression viable without reloading. It also does 25% more damage than the aK47, but with more aimcone, and a slightly slower fire rate.” A week later, in Devblog 87, they made two decisions that shaped the next decade of Rust: they stated flatly that “The M249 is not user craftable”, and they gave it “a new recoil penalty when moving.”

Both of those are still true in 2026. The gun has been rebalanced since, and the modern numbers actually favour it more than the 2015 description did (it now fires faster than an AK, not slower, and does 30% more damage rather than 25%), but the two defining rules never changed. You cannot make one. And you cannot run and gun with one.

That is why the M249 occupies a weird spot in Rust progression. It is not an endgame goal you work toward like C4 or an AK blueprint. It is a trophy. You go and fight something enormous, you win, you open some crates, and maybe the game gives you one. Most of the time it does not.

M249 Rust stats card: 65 damage per shot, 500 rounds per minute, 541.7 firing DPS, a 100 round magazine which is the largest in Rust, 0.2 degree aim cone, 7.5 second reload, 1.8 second draw, fires all four 5.56 rifle ammo types, cannot be crafted or researched, stacks to 1 and despawns in 1 hour, repairs with 30 metal fragments and 11 high quality metal, shortname lmg.m249
Every core M249 number on one card, cross checked against the Facepunch wiki and RustClash.

M249 Rust Stats and Facts

Here is the whole gun in one table. These are current 2026 figures, pulled from the Facepunch wiki item page and cross checked against RustClash and RustHelp.

Two numbers there deserve a second look. The 7.5 second reload is brutal, nearly double the AK’s 4.4 seconds, and the 1.8 second draw means swapping to the M249 mid fight is slow enough to lose you the fight. Those two costs are the balance for the damage and the belt. The M249 is a gun you want already in your hands, already loaded, before anything happens.

The other thing worth knowing: it stacks to 1 and despawns after an hour. You cannot hoard a pile of them in a single slot, and if one drops on the ground in a fight and nobody picks it up, it is gone.

How to Get an M249 in Rust

This is the question everybody actually types into Google, so here is the honest answer up front: there are two sources and that is the entire list. No craft. No research table. No tech tree node. No vendor at Outpost or Bandit Camp. No monument puzzle. No airdrop. Two event bosses, both of which shoot back.

How to get an M249 in Rust: the only two sources are the Patrol Helicopter, which drops 4 Helicopter Crates at 10 percent each for a 34 percent chance per heli and spawns every 2 to 4 hours, and the Bradley APC, which drops 3 APC Crates at 8.3 percent each for a 23 percent chance per Bradley and respawns every 60 minutes

The Easter rows are real but you should not plan around them. They only exist while Facepunch has the seasonal event switched on, which is a few days a year. For every practical purpose, the M249 comes from a helicopter or a tank.

The M249 Is the Most Likely Gun in a Heli Crate This is the stat almost every guide misses. In a Helicopter Crate, the M249 sits at 10% while the Assault Rifle, MP5A4, Bolt Action, Thompson and Custom SMG are all at 2%, and the LR-300, L96 and HMLMG are at 1%. You are five times more likely to pull an M249 out of a heli crate than an AK. The M249 is not a lottery ticket inside those crates, it is the headline prize, and every other gun is the consolation.

Source 1: The Patrol Helicopter

The Patrol Helicopter is a scripted event that spawns roughly every 2 to 4 hours on default settings, comes in from a random direction, and patrols the radtowns before leaving the island. There is a nice piece of symmetry here: the heli is shooting at you with M249s. Killing it is how you get one.

The Patrol Helicopter exploding in mid air in Rust with loot crates falling out of the burning wreck, an actual in-game screenshot, the main source of the M249
Four Helicopter Crates falling out of a dead patrol heli. Each one is a 10% roll on an M249.
  1. Get its attention. Hit it with any ranged weapon and it will break off its patrol route and come for you. An L96 with HV ammo is the standard opener because of the range.
  2. Go for the rotors, not the body. The heli has 10,000 HP, which is a lot of bullets. But it also has two weak points: the main rotor at 900 HP and the tail rotor at 500 HP. Destroy both and the helicopter dies regardless of how much body health is left. That is a 1,400 HP problem instead of a 10,000 HP one.
  3. Have somewhere to respawn. It fires rockets and incendiary rockets, and embrasures do not save you from explosions. A base with a bed nearby turns a wipe into a two minute setback.
  4. Show up, or it leaves. If you hit it and then hide, it gives up after about 30 seconds and goes back to its route.
  5. Wait out the fire. The four Helicopter Crates land on fire and cannot be looted for a few minutes. If they land in water the fire goes out immediately and they are lootable straight away.
The 2025 Flee Rework Older Guides Miss Facepunch rebalanced the heli in the Friends with Benefits update (July 2025). It now always flees toward a monument, flees are capped to one grid square, the flee location shows on the map, and it will not flee at all if you engage it from inside or near a monument. In practice that means fewer three grid chases and a lot more third party PvP, because everyone on the server can see where the fight is heading. Bring friends or bring speed.

Source 2: The Bradley APC

The Bradley APC patrols the road loop at Launch Site with 1,000 HP and no weak spot. It only takes explosive damage, which sounds expensive until you look at the actual numbers.

The Bradley APC at Launch Site in Rust seen head on with its headlights on and turret raised, an actual in-game screenshot, the second and faster source of the M249
Bradley drops 3 APC Crates and comes back every hour. That hourly reset is what makes it the real M249 farm.

Rocket1115,40096.25 per hit, do not do this
MLRS7n/a160 per hit, but the launcher cannot move

Seven HV rockets for 1,400 sulfur is the answer for a solo or a duo. Three C4 costs a lot more sulfur but kills it in seconds, which matters because damaging Bradley now deploys waves of scientists, and the later waves include heavy scientists at 300 HP carrying miniguns, M249s and military flamethrowers. Kill it fast and you skip those waves entirely.

Then it comes back in 60 minutes. That single fact is what makes Bradley the better M249 farm despite its worse per kill odds. Run the maths: at 23% per Bradley and one Bradley an hour, you are rolling roughly 23% an hour. The patrol heli gives you 34%, but only every 2 to 4 hours, which works out to somewhere between 9% and 17% an hour. If you have the sulfur and you can hold Launch Site, Bradley wins.

M249 Drop Chance: The Real Odds

Percentages per crate are not what you actually want to know. What you want to know is how long a hunt takes. Here is the honest version, and it is worse than most people expect.

Bar chart of the cumulative M249 drop chance in Rust: after one patrol helicopter kill you have a 34 percent chance of at least one M249 and 23 percent per Bradley, rising to 57 and 41 percent after two kills, 72 and 54 percent after three, and still short of certainty after six kills
Cumulative chance of at least one M249. Notice it never touches 100%, no matter how many you kill.

134%23%
257%41%
372%54%
481%65%
588%73%
692%79%

The maths is simple and it is worth understanding, because a lot of players get it wrong. Chances do not add up. Four crates at 10% each is not a 40% chance. What you calculate is the chance of striking out on every single crate and subtract it from one: 1 minus 0.9 to the power of 4, which gives 34.4%. Do the same with three crates at 8.3% and you get 22.9%.

The uncomfortable takeaway is in the last row. Even after six patrol helicopters, roughly a full day of hunting, you are at 92%. Not 100%. There are players who have killed a dozen helis in a wipe and never seen one, and there are players who got one on their first crate. That is genuinely how the maths works, and no amount of grinding changes it.

Rough Rule of Thumb On average it takes about 3 patrol helicopters or about 4 to 5 Bradleys to see one M249. Budget your sulfur around that, not around “next one for sure”.

Can You Craft or Research the M249?

No, and this needs stating clearly because there is bad information out there. The Facepunch wiki item page lists the M249 as Craftable: False and Researchable: False. It has no recipe, it produces no blueprint when you find one, it cannot be put on a research table, and it does not appear anywhere on the tech tree. Facepunch has said so since Devblog 87 in 2015 and has never changed it.

Ignore Sites That Print an M249 Crafting Recipe At least one Rust item database currently shows an M249 “crafting recipe” of 40 HQM, 1 Rifle Body, 6 Metal Springs and 6 Gears at Workbench 3 with a 33 minute craft time. That recipe does not exist in the game. It looks like a value derived backwards from the recycle output and then presented as a recipe. If a page tells you that you can craft an M249, it is wrong, and you should not trust the rest of its numbers either.

What you can do is repair one. A repair bench costs 30 Metal Fragments and 11 HQM per repair, and each repair permanently costs the gun 20% of its maximum condition, so an M249 is not immortal. Look after it, and do not hand it to the guy who runs into every fight naked.

M249 vs HMLMG vs AK

The M249 wins every raw stat comparison in the game, and it is not close. Here is how it stacks up against the two guns you would realistically be holding instead.

M249 versus HMLMG versus Assault Rifle in Rust compared side by side: the drop only M249 does 65 damage at 500 rounds per minute with a 100 round magazine and 541.7 DPS but a 7.5 second reload, the craftable HMLMG does 57.5 damage at 480 RPM with 60 rounds and 460 DPS, and the Assault Rifle does 50 damage at 450 RPM with 30 rounds and 375 DPS
Same ammo, same aim cone, wildly different guns. The M249 wins on paper and loses on availability.

Put a number on what that damage gap actually means. To deal 500 damage, the M249 needs 8 shots and takes 0.96 seconds. The AK needs 10 shots and takes 1.33 seconds. Over a long fight the M249 is roughly 44% faster at putting damage on target, and it does it without a reload while the AK has already stopped to change mags three times.

The HMLMG is the craftable stand-in

The HMLMG exists because Facepunch wanted a machine gun players could actually build. It is a deliberate step down from the M249 and the description says so. You craft it at Workbench 3 for 60 HQM, 3 Metal Springs and 2 Gears, and the blueprint is 120 scrap at a research table (or roughly 660 scrap through the tech tree path). It also turns up in locked crates and, occasionally, from the roadside Travelling Vendor for somewhere in the 100 to 355 scrap range.

Realistically, the HMLMG is what you will run. The M249 is what you will celebrate. If you are picking a gun to build a base defence around, the HMLMG is the one you can replace when it gets stolen.

M249 Ammo: What to Feed the Belt

The M249 fires all four 5.56 Rifle Ammo types, and the choice genuinely changes the gun.

The four 5.56 ammo types the M249 can fire in Rust: standard 5.56 Rifle Ammo at 65 damage, 541.7 DPS and 488 metres per second, HV 5.56 at 65 damage and 585 metres per second, Incendiary 5.56 at 72.8 damage and 606.7 DPS which is the highest damage per 5.56 shot in the game, and Explosive 5.56 at 65 plus 5 damage with a wider 0.7 degree aim cone for raiding

Explosive 5.5665 +5541.8293 m/s0.7 degRaiding only. Never PvP.

The one to notice is Incendiary. It is a flat 12% damage bump on every 5.56 weapon in the game, which on the M249 pushes it to 72.8 damage and 606.7 DPS, the highest single shot 5.56 damage in Rust. The trade is a much slower bullet at 293 m/s, so it is a close range and turret round, not a sniping round.

Explosive 5.56 is a trap in a PvP fight. It more than triples the aim cone from 0.2 to 0.7 degrees, which throws away exactly the accuracy that makes the M249 special. Save it for walls and doors, and check the counts on our Rust raid calculator before you burn a stack.

Best M249 Attachments

The M249 takes almost every attachment in the game. Here is what each one actually does to it, taken straight from the modification table.

Best M249 attachments in Rust: the Weapon Lasersight cuts aim cone 20 percent and aim sway 90 percent, the Holosight cuts aim cone 20 percent, the 8x Zoom Scope adds 50 percent recoil but suits the M249 at range, the Muzzle Brake removes 50 percent recoil and all aim sway at the cost of 15 percent damage, the Muzzle Boost adds 10 percent fire rate, the Military Silencer costs 25 percent damage and velocity, and the Simple Handmade Sight changes no stats

The standard build is lasersight plus holosight. The lasersight is doing the heavy lifting there: 90% less aim sway on a gun this heavy is the difference between a spray that lands and a spray that decorates the wall behind your target. If you are camping at range, swap the holosight for an 8x and accept the recoil penalty, because the M249 is one of the few autos that can genuinely carry a big scope.

The silencers are a hard sell. Losing 25% damage drops you from 65 to 48.75, which is below an AK’s base 50. If you want to be quiet, be quiet with a different gun.

How to Actually Shoot the M249

This is the part that catches out everyone who finally gets one and then dies with it. The M249 has a movement recoil penalty that Facepunch added in Devblog 87 and never removed. Their own words at the time were blunt: “This gun is basically unusable beyond 10m, unless you are stationary and crouched.”

First person view of the M249 in Rust with the 5.56 ammo belt feeding into the receiver, aimed across the desert at the Dome monument, an actual in-game screenshot showing the belt fed light machine gun view model
The M249 view model with the belt feeding in. Stop moving before you pull the trigger.

The gun has been rebalanced repeatedly since 2015 and it is nowhere near that harsh today, but the underlying rule has not gone anywhere. Move while you shoot and your groupings fall apart. The technique that works:

  1. Stop, then shoot. Come to a full stop before you open up. Crouching helps further.
  2. Burst, do not hose. The 100 round belt tempts you to hold the trigger. Short controlled bursts land far more of those 65 damage rounds.
  3. Use the belt as suppression, not as a magazine. The reason a 100 round belt matters is that you can keep a group pinned behind cover for a long time without a reload window. That is a defensive tool.
  4. Never reload in the open. 7.5 seconds is an eternity. Break line of sight first, every time.
  5. Pick your ground. The M249 is a roof, a window and a doorway gun. It is bad in the open field and it is bad while pushing.

The M249 in an Auto Turret

If you would rather not risk carrying it, the M249 is the strongest gun you can put in an auto turret in Rust. A turret does not move, so the movement recoil penalty that hurts a player never applies, and the 100 round belt means it will not run dry halfway through a raid defence.

M249 in a Rust auto turret compared with other turret guns by damage per second: the M249 leads with 606.7 DPS on incendiary 5.56 and 541.7 on plain 5.56, ahead of the HMLMG at 515.2 and 460, the Assault Rifle at 420.1 and 375.1, and the MP5A4 at 420 and 375, with a note that the Power Trip update raised the auto turret craft cost to 25 high quality metal

Only Arm a Turret You Can Defend A turret is a container. Anyone who breaks it open walks away with your M249. The old community advice still holds: put it in a loot room turret deep inside your base, never an external one facing the road. And remember the Power Trip update raised the Auto Turret craft cost to 25 HQM, up from 10, so the turret itself is a real investment now too.

What the Power Trip Update Changed for the M249

Facepunch shipped Power Trip on 6 August 2026, and while it did not touch the M249’s stats at all, it changed something quietly important: what a spare M249 is worth.

The Rust Power Plant cooling towers at sunset after the August 2026 Power Trip update, an actual in-game screenshot, the monument whose heavy fuse power grid now decides how much high quality metal an M249 recycles into
The Power Plant after Power Trip. How much your M249 recycles for now depends on whether this monument is switched on.

The short version of the update is that the Power Plant became a server wide power grid that players maintain themselves. You loot Heavy Fuses, you feed them into special fuse boxes at the plant, and the more fuses are in, the more of the island switches on. There are four phases, gated at 1 to 3, 4 to 9, 10 to 17 and 18 or more fuses.

The parts of that update that touch this guide directly:

ChangeWhat it means for you
Recycler yield now depends on the gridGreen recyclers run at 50% when the plant is dead and are restored to 60% when it is powered. Safe zone recyclers are unchanged at 40%.
New red recycler at the Power PlantRuns at 75% at full power. Best recycle rate in Rust, and it processes faster too.
Auto Turret now costs 25 HQMUp from 10. Arming turrets with looted guns is a bigger commitment than it was.
Airfield Chinook terminal (Phase 4)Calls a locked crate to the tarmac. Not an M249 source, but a reason to have one when the whole server turns up.
The satellite crash event (Phase 4)A new server wide loot event at Launch Site with heavy PvP. Exactly the kind of fight an M249 is built for.

None of this makes the M249 easier to get. What it does is give you a much better reason to keep the second one you find instead of leaving it in a box, because the scrap and HQM economy around it moved.

M249 Recycle Value

An M249 is one of the richest single items you can put in a recycler, and after Power Trip where you recycle it matters more than it ever did.

M249 recycle value in Rust after the August 2026 Power Trip update: the new red Power Plant recycler returns 30 high quality metal, 4 gears and 4 metal springs at 75 percent yield, a charged green recycler returns 24 HQM, 3 gears and 3 springs at 60 percent, an unpowered green recycler returns 20 HQM, 3 gears and 3 springs at 50 percent, and a safe zone recycler returns 16 HQM, 2 gears and 2 springs at 40 percent
The same gun, four very different payouts. Fourteen HQM separates the best recycler from the worst.

Every one of those also rolls an extra Rifle Body, Gears and Metal Spring on top of the guaranteed output, at the same percentage as the recycler’s yield. Full breakdown of how the machines work is in our Rust recycler guide.

Do Not Recycle Your Only One 30 HQM is a good haul, but it is not that good. An M249 is worth more in a turret, in a loot room, or on your back than it is as high quality metal. Recycle the second one, or a badly damaged one you cannot afford to keep repairing.

M249 Rust Skins

There are around 30 workshop skins for the M249 and, as with every skin in Rust, none of them change a single stat. They are cosmetic only. A Bombshell M249 and a plain one do exactly the same 65 damage.

Popular ones include Tempered, Black Gold, Popstar, Rainbow Pony, Bombshell, Factory New, Redemption and Cold Hunter. Several are Twitch drops rather than market items, including Frost LMG, Trainwreck, GalaaxXy, M2cG, FancyOrb and the Team Buddha and Erobb skin, which is why they show up in searches with no price attached.

There Is No Pay to Win M249 Skin Skins in Rust never affect damage, recoil, capacity or fire rate. If a listing or a video claims a particular M249 skin has a cleaner sight picture or better recoil, it is selling you something. The only thing a skin changes is what other people see when they loot your body.

Pro Tips for Using an M249

  1. Never carry it into a fight you did not choose. A gun with a 1.8 second draw and no replacement is not a roaming weapon. It is a defence weapon and an ambush weapon.
  2. Repairs are finite. Each repair costs 20% of maximum condition. Do not top it up after every skirmish, only when it matters.
  3. Bring it to the heli fight you are already having. The M249 is genuinely excellent against the Patrol Helicopter, and Corrosion Hour notes it can tag the heli at extreme range. An M249 is the best tool for farming more M249s.
  4. Run incendiary in turrets, HV in your hands. Incendiary is slow but hits hardest, which is perfect for a stationary turret at close range. HV is flat and fast, which is what you want when you are the one aiming.
  5. Watch the despawn. One hour on the ground and it is gone. If it drops during a fight, someone needs to pick it up.
  6. Do not leave it in an external turret. Anyone who cracks that turret is walking away with the rarest gun on the server, and they will tell everyone.
  7. It all wipes anyway. Blueprints reset on the monthly force wipe and every item in your base goes with the map. There is no point saving an M249 for a rainy day when the rain is scheduled.

Know exactly how long you have to find one. The monthly force wipe resets the map, your base and your loot. Check the live countdown before you plan a heli hunt.

M249 Rust FAQ

How do you get the M249 in Rust?

There are only two ways. You loot it from a Helicopter Crate dropped by the Patrol Helicopter, where it has a 10% chance per crate and the heli drops 4 crates, or from an APC Crate dropped by the Bradley APC at Launch Site, where it has an 8.3% chance per crate and Bradley drops 3. That works out to roughly a 34% chance per patrol helicopter and a 23% chance per Bradley. There is no craft, no research table, no tech tree node and no vendor that sells it.

Can you craft the M249 in Rust?

No. The Facepunch wiki lists the M249 as not craftable and not researchable, and Facepunch stated this in Devblog 87 back in November 2015 when the gun was first balanced. It has no recipe, it cannot be put on a research table, and it does not appear on the tech tree. Any site showing an M249 crafting recipe is wrong, including ones that list something like 40 HQM plus a rifle body and gears at Workbench 3. That recipe does not exist in the game.

How rare is the M249 in Rust?

Rare enough that plenty of players go entire wipes without one. Per crate it is 10% from a Helicopter Crate and 8.3% from an APC Crate. Because chances do not simply add up, killing a patrol helicopter gives you about a 34% chance of at least one, and killing a Bradley gives about 23%. Even after six patrol helicopters you are only at about 92%, never 100%. On average, expect about three patrol helis or four to five Bradleys per M249.

What is the rarest gun in Rust?

The M249 is the usual answer, and the reasoning is about access rather than raw percentages. It is the only gun in Rust that cannot be crafted, cannot be researched, is not on the tech tree, is not sold by any vendor and drops from just two event bosses. Every other top tier weapon in the game has at least one route you can work toward with scrap and materials. The M249 has none.

How much damage does the M249 do in Rust?

65 damage per shot with standard 5.56 Rifle Ammo, doubled to 130 on a headshot. At 500 rounds per minute that is a firing DPS of 541.7. Incendiary 5.56 raises it to 72.8 damage and 606.7 DPS, the highest single shot 5.56 damage in the game. For comparison, the Assault Rifle does 50 damage at 450 RPM for 375 DPS, and the HMLMG does 57.5 at 480 RPM for 460 DPS.

What ammo does the M249 use in Rust?

The M249 fires all four 5.56 Rifle Ammo types. Standard 5.56 does 65 damage at 488 metres per second. HV 5.56 does the same 65 damage but travels at 585 metres per second for the flattest bullet drop. Incendiary 5.56 does 72.8 damage but only 293 metres per second. Explosive 5.56 does 65 plus 5 splash but widens the aim cone from 0.2 to 0.7 degrees, so it is a raiding round rather than a PvP round.

How big is the M249 magazine in Rust?

100 rounds, which is the largest magazine of any firearm in Rust. The HMLMG holds 60 and the Assault Rifle holds 30. The trade is a 7.5 second reload, nearly double the AK’s 4.4 seconds, so the belt is best used as sustained suppression rather than as a magazine you plan to empty and swap.

What are the best attachments for the M249 in Rust?

The Weapon Lasersight and the Holosight. The lasersight cuts aim cone by 20%, hip aim cone by 50% and aim sway by a huge 90%, which is exactly what a heavy gun needs. The holosight cuts aim cone by another 20% and gives a clean sight picture. For long range, swap the holosight for an 8x Zoom Scope and accept the 50% recoil penalty, since the M249 is one of the few automatics that can carry a big scope well. Skip the silencers, because losing 25% to 30% damage drops the M249 below an AK’s base damage.

Does the M249 have bad recoil in Rust?

It has a movement recoil penalty that Facepunch added in Devblog 87 in 2015 and never removed. Standing still and crouching makes the gun dramatically easier to control, and moving while spraying wrecks your accuracy. Its aim cone is actually a very tight 0.2 degrees, the same as an Assault Rifle, so a stationary M249 with a lasersight is extremely accurate. The rule is simple: stop moving, then shoot, and use short bursts rather than holding the trigger.

Is the M249 better than the AK in Rust?

On paper, yes, comfortably. The M249 does 65 damage to the AK’s 50, fires at 500 RPM to the AK’s 450, and holds 100 rounds to the AK’s 30, giving 541.7 DPS against 375. In practice the AK is better for most players most of the time, because you can craft an AK, replace it when you die, reload it in 4.4 seconds instead of 7.5, and draw it in 1 second instead of 1.8. The M249 is the better gun and the AK is the better choice.

Is the M249 or the HMLMG better in Rust?

The M249 is better in every stat: 65 damage versus 57.5, 500 RPM versus 480, and a 100 round belt versus 60. The HMLMG’s advantage is that you can actually build one. It costs 60 HQM, 3 Metal Springs and 2 Gears at Workbench 3, and its blueprint is 120 scrap at a research table. Because of that, the HMLMG is the machine gun you run day to day and the M249 is the one you save for defending a base.

What is the best gun for an auto turret in Rust?

The M249, by a clear margin. In a turret it puts out 606.7 DPS with incendiary 5.56 and 541.7 with plain 5.56, ahead of the HMLMG at 515.2 and 460, and well ahead of the Assault Rifle and MP5A4 at around 420 and 375. A turret never moves, so the M249’s movement recoil penalty never applies, and the 100 round belt means it will not run dry mid raid. Just keep it in an internal loot room turret, because whoever breaks that turret takes the gun.

How much does an M249 recycle for in Rust?

It depends on the recycler, and since the August 2026 Power Trip update that matters more than it used to. The new red Power Plant recycler at full grid power returns 30 high quality metal, 4 Gears and 4 Metal Springs. A powered green recycler returns 24 HQM, 3 Gears and 3 Metal Springs. An unpowered green recycler returns 20 HQM, 3 Gears and 3 Metal Springs. A safe zone recycler at Outpost or Bandit Camp returns 16 HQM, 2 Gears and 2 Metal Springs. All of them also roll an extra Rifle Body on top.

Did the Power Trip update change the M249?

Not the gun itself. Power Trip, released on 6 August 2026, did not touch the M249’s damage, fire rate, magazine or drop rates. What it did change is the economy around it. Recycler yields are now tied to the player maintained Power Plant grid, so the same M249 recycles for anywhere between 16 and 30 high quality metal depending on where you take it, and the new red recycler at the Power Plant is the best in the game at 75%. The update also raised the Auto Turret craft cost from 10 HQM to 25 HQM, which makes arming a turret with a looted M249 a bigger commitment.

Can you repair an M249 in Rust?

Yes, at a repair bench for 30 Metal Fragments and 11 high quality metal. The catch is that every repair permanently removes 20% of the weapon’s maximum condition, so an M249 cannot be repaired forever. Since you cannot craft a replacement, treat repairs as a limited resource and only top it up before a fight that actually matters.

Do M249 skins change stats in Rust?

No. Every skin in Rust is purely cosmetic and has zero effect on damage, recoil, magazine size, fire rate or accuracy. That is true of all roughly 30 M249 skins, including the Twitch drop skins like Frost LMG and Trainwreck and market skins like Tempered, Black Gold and Bombshell. There is no pay to win M249 skin, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something.
