Gunpowder in Rust is the most boring item in the game and the reason you win or lose a wipe. Nobody screenshots a stack of gun powder. Nobody brags about it. But every rocket that goes through your wall, every explosive round that chews your door, every C4 stuck to your loot room started as a pile of grey dust somebody mixed while their furnaces ran.
Here is the part most guides skip: there are two different ways to make gunpowder in Rust, they cost different amounts, and the one almost everybody uses is the expensive one. Get that single decision right and you save a third of your charcoal on every single craft, forever, for the price of 200 metal fragments.
This guide covers the recipe, the real sulfur and charcoal cost, the mixing table trick, how to farm the inputs fast, and how to get gun powder without farming at all. Every number is vanilla and cross checked against the Facepunch wiki and our own Rust raid calculator.

What Is Gun Powder in Rust?
Gun Powder is a crafted resource, not a weapon and not a component you loot off a scientist. It sits in that awkward middle layer of Rust’s economy: too processed to be a raw material, too basic to be a finished item. Its whole job is to be consumed by something louder.
In the game files it goes by the shortname gunpowder, item ID -265876753, and Facepunch’s own description sums it up better than any guide can: “Made from Sulfur and Charcoal, a key ingredient of anything that goes bang!”
Two properties make it worth understanding on its own rather than as a line in someone else’s recipe.
First, it stacks to 1,000. That is enormous by Rust standards. A single inventory slot holds enough gun powder for a full C4, and roughly a stack and a half covers a rocket. Finished explosives stack far smaller, which is why experienced players bank powder instead of pre-crafting boom they might not use.
Second, the blueprint is known by default. You do not research it, you do not tech tree it, and you do not need to find it. From the second you spawn naked on the beach, the recipe is already in your crafting menu waiting for a Workbench Level 1. There is no gate here at all except materials.
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Shortname | gunpowder |
| Item ID | -265876753 |
| Stack size | 1,000 |
| Despawn time | 1 hour |
| Workbench | Level 1 Required |
| Blueprint | Known by default |
| Craft time | 2 sec at WB1, 1 sec at WB2, 0.5 sec at WB3 |
| Loot source | Mine crates and minecarts, 15 to 24 at roughly 8% |
The Gunpowder Recipe: How To Make Gun Powder in Rust
The workbench recipe is two ingredients and has not changed in years.
30 Charcoal + 20 Sulfur = 10 Gun Powder. That is a 3:2 charcoal to sulfur ratio, and it produces ten units per craft, which is the number that trips people up when they are doing raid maths in their head. You are not making one gun powder for 30 charcoal. You are making ten.
The only real requirement is a Workbench Level 1. You cannot craft gun powder by hand out in the field, which catches out players who assume a default blueprint means no bench. It does not. The blueprint is free, the bench is not optional.
Craft speed scales with your bench tier: 2 seconds at Workbench 1, 1 second at Workbench 2, and half a second at Workbench 3. That sounds trivial until you are queuing 1,000 gun powder for a C4 and realise a WB1 takes over three minutes of pure craft time to chew through it.
The Mixing Table Makes Gunpowder 33% Cheaper
This is the section most gunpowder guides do not have, and it is worth more than everything else on this page combined.
The Mixing Table is a deployable most players associate with teas. Berries go in, buffs come out, and if you do not farm you probably never built one. But the mixing table has a second recipe list that has nothing to do with tea, and gun powder is on it at a better ratio than the workbench.
At a workbench, 10 gun powder costs 30 charcoal and 20 sulfur in 2 seconds. At a mixing table, the exact same 10 gun powder costs 20 charcoal and 20 sulfur in 1 second. The sulfur bill is identical. The charcoal bill drops by a third. The speed doubles.
You do not have to take that on trust either. The mixing table’s own recipe screen spells it out in game.
The ingredients sit in four slots of ten because that is how the mixing table takes input, which reads as 10 sulfur, 10 charcoal, 10 sulfur, 10 charcoal. Add them up and it is 20 sulfur and 20 charcoal for a batch of ten.
Over one C4 that saves you 1,000 charcoal. Over a ten C4 raid it saves 10,000 charcoal, which is somewhere north of 13,000 wood you never have to chop, haul or burn.
Getting a mixing table
It costs 200 Metal Fragments and 100 Stones at a Workbench Level 1, has 500 HP, and the blueprint is 30 scrap at a research table (about 90 scrap total if you go through the tech tree instead). That is genuinely nothing. Two hundred metal fragments is one decent barrel run.
While it is placed, the table also mixes low grade fuel, several ammo types and the Explosives item, all at their own ratios, plus the full tea list. If you already run ore teas for farming, you have one of these already and have been crafting your gun powder the expensive way next to it.
What One Gun Powder Actually Costs
Strip out the batch size and every gun powder in Rust costs you 2 sulfur and 3 charcoal at a workbench, or 2 sulfur and 2 charcoal at a mixing table.
That 2 sulfur per gun powder figure is the single most useful number in Rust raiding. It is the constant that makes every canonical sulfur cost check out. A C4 needs 1,000 gun powder, so 2,000 sulfur, plus the 200 sulfur the Explosives recipe adds directly, which lands exactly on the well known 2,200 sulfur per C4. A rocket needs 650 gun powder, so 1,300 sulfur, plus 100 direct, giving 1,400. If a guide’s numbers imply 3 sulfur per gun powder, its entire cost table is wrong.
Recycling gun powder is possible but pointless. A monument recycler returns roughly 1.8 charcoal and 1.2 sulfur per unit, which is the standard 60% return, so you always lose material. Gun powder is a one way street.
Farming Sulfur, The Actual Bottleneck
Charcoal is annoying. Sulfur is the wall. Every raid you will ever run is gated by how much sulfur ore you can put through a furnace, so this is where your time actually goes.
Sulfur nodes are the pale yellow streaked rocks scattered across the map, heaviest in the arid and snow biomes. One node yields roughly 100 to 300 sulfur ore depending on the node and your tool, and one sulfur ore smelts into exactly one sulfur. There is no loss in the furnace, which makes the maths pleasantly simple: if you need 2,200 sulfur for a C4, you need 2,200 ore.
| Sulfur Source | Rough Yield | Worth It? |
|---|---|---|
| Sulfur node, jackhammer Fastest | 100 to 300 ore per node | Best rate by far, needs low grade fuel |
| Sulfur node, metal pickaxe | 100 to 300 ore per node | The reliable default |
| Sulfur quarry | Passive while fuelled | Set and forget, needs diesel |
| Giant Excavator | Huge, but contested | Great yield, terrible safety |
| Stone pickaxe or rock | Same node, much slower | Early wipe only |
Two tricks matter more than tool choice. The first is ore teas: a pure ore tea raises node yield substantially, and since gun powder scales linearly with sulfur, the tea pays for itself several times over on any serious farm run. The second is furnace uptime. Ore does not decay and does not spoil, so there is no reason to ever leave a furnace idle. Load it before you log off.
The Charcoal Problem Nobody Talks About
Ask a Rust player what a C4 costs and they will say 2,200 sulfur. Ask them how much charcoal it takes and you usually get a blank look. The answer is 3,000 charcoal at a workbench, or 2,000 at a mixing table, and plenty of raids stall on charcoal rather than sulfur because nobody was counting it.
Charcoal is a by-product. Every time you burn wood in a furnace, campfire or barbecue, roughly 0.75 charcoal comes out per wood consumed. You are producing it constantly, for free, as a side effect of smelting the sulfur you actually wanted. The problem is that most players treat it as clutter and bin it to free up inventory space, then wonder why the crafting menu is red.
If you genuinely need charcoal in a hurry rather than as a by-product, the fastest producer in the game is not a furnace at all. A small oil refinery burns through wood faster than any furnace, which makes it a legitimate dedicated charcoal machine on top of its day job turning crude into low grade fuel.
Everything That Needs Gun Powder
Fifty separate items in Rust list gun powder as an ingredient. Here are the ones you will actually craft.
| Item | Gun Powder | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| C4 The big one | 1,000 | Via 20 Explosives at 50 gun powder each |
| Rocket | 650 | 10 Explosives (500) plus 150 direct |
| Satchel Charge | 240 | Four beancans at 60 each |
| Incendiary Rocket | 150 | Direct, no Explosives item |
| High Velocity Rocket | 100 | The cheapest rocket by a mile |
| Beancan Grenade | 60 | Plus 20 metal fragments |
| Explosives item | 50 | The intermediate behind C4 and rockets |
| Smoke Grenade | 35 | Remember this one for later |
| F1 Grenade | 30 | Cheap, and brutal on soft targets |
| Survey Charge | 30 | For finding quarry spots |
| Explosive 5.56 | 20 | Yields two rounds, so 10 each |
| 12 Gauge Buckshot | 10 | Per round |
| 5.56 Rifle Ammo | 5 | Per round, and it adds up fast |
| Pistol Bullet | 5 | Per round |
Notice that plain rifle ammo is on that list. A single 5.56 round costs 5 gun powder, which is 10 sulfur. Spray a hundred rounds in a bad fight and you have burned a thousand sulfur, or roughly half a rocket, on nothing. This is why serious players run weapons they can actually feed.
Raid Math: Gun Powder Per Explosive
Here is the table to screenshot. Sulfur is the headline cost, but charcoal is always 1.5 times the sulfur figure at a workbench, and exactly equal to it at a mixing table.
| Explosive | Gun Powder | Sulfur | Charcoal (bench) | Charcoal (mixed) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C4 | 1,000 | 2,200 | 3,000 | 2,000 |
| Rocket | 650 | 1,400 | 1,950 | 1,300 |
| Satchel Charge | 240 | 480 | 720 | 480 |
| HV Rocket | 100 | 200 | 300 | 200 |
| Beancan Grenade | 60 | 120 | 180 | 120 |
| F1 Grenade | 30 | 60 | 90 | 60 |
| Explosive 5.56 (per round) | 10 | 25 | 30 | 20 |
Run that against a real target and the scale lands. Cracking an armored door takes 3 C4, which is 3,000 gun powder, 6,600 sulfur and 9,000 charcoal at a workbench. Mix instead and the charcoal bill drops to 6,000. That is a full extra C4’s worth of charcoal saved on a single door.
Free Gun Powder Without Touching a Sulfur Node
Everything above assumes you farm. You do not always have to. Gun powder comes back out of the recycler from anything that had it in the recipe, and some of those items are cheap or free.
The smoke grenade trick
This is the best scrap to gun powder conversion in the game. The Extra 1 vending machine at Outpost sells Smoke Grenades for around 5 scrap. A smoke grenade is crafted from 35 gun powder and 50 metal fragments, so recycling one gives you most of that back.
At a normal monument recycler you get 21 gun powder and 30 metal fragments per smoke grenade. That is 21 gun powder, worth 42 sulfur, for about 5 scrap. There is no farming route in Rust that competes with that if you have scrap sitting idle.
You will also see the figure “18 gun powder per smoke grenade” repeated across a lot of sites. It matches neither recycler rate. The Facepunch wiki lists the smoke grenade’s recycle output as 21 gun powder at a regular recycler and 14 at a safe zone recycler, both at 100 percent, with no random roll involved.
| Recycle This | Gun Powder Back | Where You Get It |
|---|---|---|
| Smoke Grenade Best value | 21 | Outpost Extra 1 vendor, around 5 scrap |
| Rocket | 60 to 113 | Airdrops, elite crates, locked crates |
| HV Rocket | 40 to 75 | Same crate pool as rockets |
| Beancan Grenade | 24 to 45 | Barrels and normal crates |
| F1 Grenade | 12 to 23 | Military crates and scientists |
| Survey Charge | 12 to 23 | Crafted or looted |
| Mine crate or minecart | 15 to 24 raw | Direct drop, roughly 8% chance |
The rocket line is worth reading twice. If you loot a rocket you cannot use because you have no launcher, recycling it hands back 60 to 113 gun powder. Scrapping rockets you will never fire is not a waste, it is a shortcut.
The Fastest Gun Powder Farm Route
Put the whole loop together and it runs like this.
- Build the mixing table first. Two hundred metal fragments and a hundred stones, before you farm a single sulfur node. Everything after this point is a third cheaper in charcoal.
- Run a jackhammer if you can afford one. It clears sulfur nodes far faster than a metal pickaxe and turns a farm session into a fraction of the time. Fuel it with low grade.
- Drink a pure ore tea before the run, not after. The bonus applies to what you mine while it is active, so it has to be up before you swing.
- Load the furnaces and walk away. Ore does not decay. A large furnace full of sulfur ore is free progress while you do literally anything else, including logging off.
- Keep every scrap of charcoal. It arrives free with the sulfur. Give it a box, not the ground.
- Mix in bulk, then stop. Convert to gun powder and bank it at 1,000 a slot. Only turn it into explosives when you know the target.
Gun Powder Mistakes That Cost You a Raid
- Crafting at a workbench out of habit. You burn 50 percent more charcoal for identical output. This is the big one.
- Recycling smoke grenades inside Outpost. The safe zone recycler pays 40 percent. You lose 7 gun powder per grenade for the convenience of not walking.
- Binning charcoal to free up space. It is a third of your raid cost and it costs you nothing to produce.
- Pre-crafting explosives you might not need. Gun powder stacks to 1,000. C4 does not. Bank the flexible version.
- Letting furnaces sit empty overnight. Sulfur ore does not spoil and does not decay. Idle furnaces are the cheapest mistake in Rust.
- Spraying 5.56 like it is free. Every round is 10 sulfur. A hundred wasted rounds is most of a rocket.
Farming for a raid? Gun powder is an item, not a blueprint, so every stack you bank dies with the map. Check the live force wipe countdown before you sink a night into sulfur.

Final Thoughts
Gunpowder is the least glamorous item in Rust and the one that decides who gets raided. The recipe is two ingredients and no blueprint gate, so the only thing separating a player with 10 C4 from a player with none is how efficiently they turn rocks and wood into powder.
Three things do most of the work. Build a mixing table and stop paying the workbench charcoal tax. Keep your charcoal, because it is a third of the bill and it arrives for free. And spend idle scrap on smoke grenades, recycled outside the safe zone, because 21 gun powder for 5 scrap beats any farming route in the game.
Do that and you stop being the player who runs out of powder halfway through a raid window.
