Smoke Grenade Rust: Craft Cost, Turrets, Duration & Gun Powder Trick (2026)

Rust tools and raiding guide, 2026

The Smoke Grenade is the one grenade in Rust that does no damage at all. You pull the pin, throw it, and a few seconds later there is a big wall of grey smoke that nobody can see through. Not players, not auto turrets, not CCTV cameras. That makes it one of the most useful cheap tools in the game for raids, monument runs and fights in the open.

It is also the best scrap to gun powder trade in Rust. A smoke grenade costs 5 scrap at the Outpost and recycles into 21 gun powder. This smoke grenade Rust guide covers the craft cost, how long the smoke lasts, what it blocks and what it does not, where to buy and loot them, the recycling trick and the best ways to use smoke on a raid.

TL;DR A Smoke Grenade costs 35 gun powder and 50 metal fragments (70 sulfur, 105 charcoal) at a Workbench 2 and takes 10 seconds. Research it for 40 scrap. It stacks to 3 and does no damage. The cloud lasts roughly 45 seconds and blocks sight for players, auto turrets and CCTV cameras, but bullets still pass through and SAM sites, flame turrets and shotgun traps ignore it. Buy them for 5 scrap at the Outpost Extra 1 vending machine and recycle them at a powered monument recycler for 21 gun powder and 30 metal fragments each.

What Is the Smoke Grenade in Rust?

The smoke grenade is a thrown tool, not an explosive. The in-game description says it “produces a large cloud of opaque greyish white smoke”, and that is all it does. There is no blast, no fire and no damage to players, doors or deployables. What you get instead is cover you can carry in your pocket.

Anyone looking into the cloud sees only grey, and anyone standing inside it is blind too. Automated defences that need line of sight, like the auto turret, lose their target. That is why you see smoke at every stage of a wipe: crossing open ground at a monument, hiding a locked crate hack, covering the door while you place C4, and blinding a roof camper while your team pushes.

Smoke grenades were added in August 2018. Back then you could only buy them at the Bandit Camp. Today they are a normal Workbench 2 blueprint and one of the cheapest items in the Outpost vending machines.

How to Craft a Smoke Grenade in Rust

How to craft a smoke grenade in Rust: 35 gun powder plus 50 metal fragments makes 1 Smoke Grenade at a Workbench 2 in 10 seconds, 5 seconds at a Workbench 3, 40 scrap to research, stack of 3 and 210 sulfur a stack
Gun powder and frags at a Workbench 2.

The smoke grenade is not a default blueprint. Put one in a Research Table with 40 scrap, or unlock it on the Workbench 2 page of the tech tree. Then craft it at a Workbench 2 from:

Each one takes 10 seconds, or 5 at a Workbench 3. A stack of three costs 210 sulfur, less than two beancans. In practice most players never craft them, because buying them at the Outpost for 5 scrap is far cheaper than farming the sulfur. Our Rust crafting calculator works out bigger batches if you do want to craft.

How Long Does a Smoke Grenade Last?

How a Rust smoke grenade works: throw it, the smoke pops about a second after it lands, and a thick grey cloud gives cover for roughly 45 seconds before it fades; it does no damage and bullets still pass through, shown with a real in-game smoke cloud filling a street
The cloud builds fast and fades in well under a minute.

Put the grenade on your hotbar, select it and throw it like any other grenade. About a second after it lands the canister starts pouring out smoke, and within a couple of seconds the cloud is big enough to hide a whole group. Most tests put the full cloud at roughly 45 seconds. The last part is thin and patchy, so plan on a bit over half a minute of solid cover from one grenade.

Three things to remember:

  • It does no damage. You can drop it at your own feet safely.
  • Bullets go straight through. Smoke blocks vision, not projectiles. A player who knows where you are can still spray into the cloud and hit you.
  • It hides you, not your sound. Footsteps, reloads and gun shots still give you away. Keep moving inside the cloud.

Smoke Grenades vs Auto Turrets and Traps

Rust smoke grenade vs turrets: auto turrets and CCTV cameras are blinded by smoke and players cannot see through it, while SAM sites, flame turrets and shotgun traps are not affected; turrets lock on again as soon as the smoke thins
Line of sight defences lose their target inside smoke.

This is the smoke grenade’s best use. The auto turret needs a clear line of sight to shoot, and a smoke cloud between you and the turret breaks it. If the turret itself sits inside the cloud it cannot target anything at all. CCTV cameras are blinded the same way and just show grey to whoever is watching.

Smoke does not help against everything:

DefenceBlocked by smoke?Why
Auto TurretYesNeeds line of sight to aim
CCTV CameraYesThe camera view fills with smoke
PlayersYes (vision only)They can still shoot blind into the cloud
SAM SiteNoTargets aircraft, not players on foot
Flame TurretNoTriggers on anything that moves in front of it
Shotgun TrapNoTriggers on movement in its cone

The catch with turrets is timing. They lock on again the moment the smoke clears, so throw the next grenade before the first one fades, not after. Smoke buys time, it does not kill the turret. Pair it with a few F1 grenades or explosive ammo if the turret has to go.

How to Use Smoke Grenades on a Raid

Rust smoke grenades on a raid: real in-game smoke clouds covering open ground at an airfield hangar, hiding a loot shed and blinding a sniper tower, plus one or two smokes before placing C4, one smoke per turret window and denying raiders a view when defending
Cover the breach, the loot and the open ground.
  • Smoke the door before C4. Placing a timed explosive charge leaves you standing still for a second. One or two smokes on the door stop defenders on the roof from picking you off.
  • Blind turret windows. Throw one smoke per turret before you peek a window or hallway. Bases with turrets on every floor need a full stack.
  • Cross open ground. Runways at the Airfield, the open yard at Launch Site and the walk up to a raid base are where most players get shot. A line of smokes gives you a corridor.
  • Hide the locked crate. A locked crate takes 15 minutes to hack. Smoke on the crate makes it much harder for a third party to snipe you off it.
  • Defend with it too. If raiders are firing rockets from a hill, smoke between them and your base blocks their view of where to aim. Defenders on the roof can smoke the ground so the raiders cannot see each other.

Where to Get Smoke Grenades in Rust

Where to get smoke grenades in Rust: 5 scrap at the Outpost Extra 1 vending machine, crafted at a Workbench 2 for 70 sulfur, 1.6 percent in basic mission loot boxes, 1.3 percent in locked crates, 0.8 percent in elite crates and 0.1 percent from most scientists
Outpost sells them, crates drop a few.

The easiest way to get smoke is to buy it. The Extra 1 vending machine at the Outpost sells one smoke grenade for 5 scrap, and it restocks fast. Loot drops are rare:

SourceChanceAmount
Outpost Extra 1 vending machineAlways (5 scrap)1
Basic mission loot box (missions)~1.6%1
Locked crate (Oil Rig, Ghost Ship, Chinook drops)~1.3%1
Elite crate (including Underwater Labs)~0.8%1 to 2
Military crate and wagon crates~0.4%1
Roaming scientist (night vision)~0.3%1
Most other scientists, heavies included~0.1%1

Loot chances are per container from the Facepunch wiki loot tables, so treat them as a bonus. If you need smoke for a raid, buy it.

The Smoke Grenade Gun Powder Trick

Rust smoke grenade gun powder trick: buy a smoke grenade for 5 scrap at the Outpost and recycle it for 21 gun powder and 30 metal fragments at a powered monument recycler; 14 gun powder at a safe zone recycler, about 18 unpowered, 21 powered and about 26 at the red Power Plant recycler
5 scrap in, 21 gun powder out.

This is the reason smoke grenades sell out on every server. A smoke grenade has 35 gun powder in its recipe and you buy it for 5 scrap. Recycle it and you get most of that gun powder back with no sulfur farming at all:

RecyclerYieldGun PowderMetal Fragments
Safe zone (Outpost, Bandit Camp)40%1420
Monument, Power Plant offline50%~1825
Monument, powered grid60%2130
Red Power Plant recycler, max power75%~26~37

So do not recycle them inside the Outpost. Buy a load, walk to the nearest monument recycler and you get 50% more gun powder than in the safe zone. The recycler tiers come from the Power Trip update, where powering the grid and the red Power Plant recycler raise the yield. 21 gun powder for 5 scrap is about 42 sulfur worth for 5 scrap, which beats almost any other way to spend spare scrap. The full breakdown is in our gun powder guide.

Smoke Grenade vs 40mm Smoke vs Supply Signal

Smoke grenade vs other smoke in Rust: the thrown smoke grenade gives cover and costs a Workbench 2 craft or 5 scrap, the 40mm smoke grenade is launcher ammo found as loot, and the supply signal makes purple smoke that calls an airdrop
Only grey smoke is cover.

Three items in Rust make smoke, and they do very different things:

ItemWhat it doesHow to get it
Smoke GrenadeThrown grey smoke cloud for coverWorkbench 2 craft, or 5 scrap at the Outpost
40mm Smoke GrenadeSmoke shot from the Multiple Grenade Launcher, a slightly smaller cloud at long rangeLoot only, see our ammo chart
Supply SignalPurple smoke that calls a cargo plane to drop a supply crateLoot only, see our airdrop guide

Never throw a supply signal for cover. The purple smoke is easy to spot from across the map, and the plane overhead tells every player nearby where you are.

Smoke Grenade Tips

Rust smoke grenade tips: smoke turret windows first, throw early because the cloud takes a second to build, spray into the smoke because enemies inside are blind too, recycle spare smokes for 21 gun powder at a monument, and keep moving inside the cloud
Smoke first, then move.
  • Throw before you need it. The cloud takes a second or two to build. Smoke first, then move.
  • Re-smoke early. Turrets and players can see again the moment the cloud thins, so throw the next one at around 30 seconds.
  • Keep moving. Players can still shoot blind into the cloud. Change direction inside it and do not stand where it started.
  • Carry a stack. Three smokes take one slot and cost 15 scrap. They are cheap insurance on any monument run.
  • Use the enemy’s smoke. If someone smokes their push, spray the edge of the cloud where they have to come out.
  • Recycle what you do not use. Spare smokes are 21 gun powder each at a powered monument recycler.

Smoke Grenade Rust FAQ

How do you craft a smoke grenade in Rust?

Craft it at a Workbench 2 from 35 gun powder and 50 metal fragments. It takes 10 seconds, or 5 seconds at a Workbench 3. You need the blueprint first, which costs 40 scrap at a Research Table or on the Workbench 2 tech tree.

How much sulfur is a smoke grenade?

70 sulfur. The 35 gun powder in the recipe is made from 70 sulfur and 105 charcoal, plus 50 metal fragments on top.

Where can you buy smoke grenades in Rust?

At the Outpost. The Extra 1 vending machine sells one smoke grenade for 5 scrap.

How long does a smoke grenade last in Rust?

Roughly 45 seconds. The smoke starts about a second after the grenade lands and thins out near the end, so expect a bit over half a minute of solid cover.

Do smoke grenades block auto turrets in Rust?

Yes. Auto turrets need line of sight, so they cannot target you through a smoke cloud, and a turret inside the smoke cannot target anything. They lock on again as soon as the smoke clears. SAM sites, flame turrets and shotgun traps are not affected.

How much gun powder do you get from recycling a smoke grenade?

21 gun powder and 30 metal fragments at a powered monument recycler. You get 14 gun powder at a safe zone recycler, about 18 when the Power Plant is offline and about 26 at the red Power Plant recycler.

Do smoke grenades do damage in Rust?

No. The smoke grenade does no damage to players, doors or deployables. It only makes a cloud of smoke that blocks vision.

What is the smoke grenade stack size in Rust?

Smoke grenades stack to 3.

Can you shoot through smoke in Rust?

Yes. Smoke only blocks vision. Bullets, arrows and rockets pass through it, so a player who knows where you are can still hit you inside the cloud.
