Charcoal Rust: How to Get It, Fastest Oven & Charcoal per C4 (2026)

Rust resources guide, 2026

Charcoal is the resource nobody farms on purpose and everybody runs out of. You never craft it, never mine it and rarely loot it. It just piles up in the output slots of your furnace while you smelt, and then one day you queue a stack of C4 and find out you are thousands short.

This charcoal Rust guide covers how charcoal is made, how much you get per wood, which oven makes it fastest, how much charcoal every explosive costs, how much wood that means you need to chop, the other places charcoal comes from, and the habits that keep your gunpowder flowing for the whole wipe.

TL;DR Charcoal comes from burning wood in any wood oven: furnace, Large Furnace, campfire, BBQ, fireplace or Small Oil Refinery. Each wood that burns has about a 75% chance to leave one charcoal, so 1,000 wood gives roughly 750 charcoal. It is used for gunpowder: 30 charcoal + 20 sulfur = 10 gunpowder at a Workbench Level 1, or only 20 charcoal at a Mixing Table. A C4 needs 3,000 charcoal (about 4,000 wood). The Electric Furnace makes none. Stack size is 1,000.

What Is Charcoal in Rust?

Charcoal is a basic resource. Its in-game description calls it a “byproduct from campfires and furnaces used for crafting gunpowder,” and that sums it up. It has no recipe and no blueprint. The only way to make it is to burn wood, and nearly the only thing you do with it is turn it into gunpowder.

That makes charcoal the quiet half of every raid. Sulfur gets all the attention because you have to go out and hit nodes for it, but every gunpowder craft needs one and a half times as much charcoal as sulfur. Groups that plan their sulfur and forget their charcoal end up with a box of sulfur and nothing to mix it with.

How to Get Charcoal in Rust

How to get charcoal in Rust: 1,000 wood burnt in a furnace for about 33 minutes gives roughly 750 charcoal while it smelts ore, about a 75% chance per wood
Burn wood, collect charcoal.
  1. Chop wood. Any tree or log pile works. A stack of 1,000 wood is the unit to think in.
  2. Put it in an oven. A furnace, Large Furnace, campfire, BBQ, stone fireplace or Small Oil Refinery. Wood goes in the fuel slot.
  3. Turn it on. Every piece of wood that burns rolls for one charcoal, about 75% of the time. You do not need ore in the oven for this to work.
  4. Empty the output. Charcoal lands in the output slots next to your smelted metal or sulfur. When the output fills up, the oven stops, so pull it out or automate it.

The neat part is that you get it for free while smelting. Run a furnace full of metal ore or sulfur ore and the wood that powers it leaves charcoal behind at the same time.

Best Way to Make Charcoal: Which Oven Is Fastest?

Best charcoal makers in Rust: Small Oil Refinery about 40 wood a minute, furnace 30 wood a minute, Large Furnace also makes charcoal, campfire BBQ and fireplace are slow, Electric Furnace makes no charcoal
Same yield per wood, very different speed.

Every wood oven turns wood into charcoal at the same rate of roughly 0.75 per wood. What changes is how quickly it eats wood, which decides how much charcoal you get per minute.

OvenWood burnt1,000 wood takesCharcoal per hour (approx.)
Small Oil RefineryAbout 40 a minuteAbout 25 minutesAbout 1,800
Furnace30 a minute (1 every 2 s)About 33 minutesAbout 1,350
Large FurnaceYes, with five ore slotsDepends on the loadSame ~0.75 per wood
Campfire, BBQ, Stone FireplaceSlowOver 2 hoursA few hundred
Electric FurnaceNone, runs on 3 power–0

The Small Oil Refinery is the best dedicated charcoal machine. It burns wood faster than any furnace, and if you feed it crude oil it also turns that into low grade fuel at the same time. A few standard furnaces are the next best thing, and they smelt your ore while they work.

The Electric Furnace is the trap. It smelts without wood, so it makes no charcoal at all. If your main base runs only electric furnaces, keep at least one wood burner going on the side.

Charcoal Into Gunpowder: Workbench vs Mixing Table

Charcoal into gunpowder in Rust: 30 charcoal and 20 sulfur make 10 gunpowder at a Workbench Level 1 in 2 seconds, or 20 charcoal and 20 sulfur at a Mixing Table, saving 33% charcoal
Mix it and save a third of your charcoal.

Gunpowder is where all your charcoal goes. There are two ways to make it:

  • Workbench Level 1: 30 charcoal + 20 sulfur = 10 gunpowder in 2 seconds. The blueprint is known by default, but you do need to be at a bench. See our Workbench Level 1 guide.
  • Mixing Table: 20 charcoal + 20 sulfur = 10 gunpowder. Same sulfur, a third less charcoal.

That 33% saving adds up fast. Over a single C4 it is 1,000 charcoal, which is more than 1,300 wood you do not have to chop and burn. If you raid at all, a Mixing Table next to your furnaces pays for itself on the first batch.

How Much Charcoal for C4, Rockets and Satchels

Charcoal per explosive in Rust: C4 3,000 charcoal (2,000 mixed), rocket 1,950 (1,300), satchel 720 (480), HV rocket 300 (200), explosive ammo 30 per round (20)

How Much Wood Do You Need for Charcoal?

Wood needed for charcoal in Rust: about 4,000 wood for one C4, 2,600 for a rocket, 960 for a satchel and 120 for an F1 grenade at 0.75 charcoal per wood
Charcoal really means chopping.

Divide the charcoal by 0.75 and you get the wood you have to burn. With workbench gunpowder:

  • 1 C4: about 4,000 wood (about 2,700 if you mix the gunpowder).
  • 1 Rocket: about 2,600 wood.
  • 1 Satchel: about 960 wood.
  • 1 HV Rocket: about 400 wood.
  • 1 F1 Grenade: about 120 wood.

A three C4 armored door is roughly 12,000 wood worth of charcoal. That is why the fastest wood tools matter: a chainsaw or salvaged axe instead of a stone hatchet, and a wood tea before a big chopping run.

Other Ways to Get Charcoal

Other ways to get charcoal in Rust: harvest Patrol Heli, Bradley and scrap heli wreck debris with a pickaxe or jackhammer, burn wood in an oil refinery, and recycle spare gunpowder
Wrecks and recyclers hand out a little extra.
  • Wreck debris. The burning gibs left by a downed Patrol Helicopter, a destroyed Bradley APC or a crashed scrap heli can be harvested with a pickaxe or jackhammer for charcoal and metal fragments, once they cool down.
  • The oil refinery. Every refining run leaves charcoal from the wood that heats it, so low grade fuel production doubles as charcoal production.
  • Recycling gunpowder. Gunpowder you find in crates or on dead raiders gives charcoal and sulfur back at a recycler, about 1.8 charcoal and 1.2 sulfur per gunpowder at a monument recycler.
  • Raiding and trading. Enemy furnaces and boxes are full of it, and some servers trade it at vending machines.

Charcoal Tips

Charcoal tips in Rust: mix gunpowder at a mixing table for 20 charcoal not 30, burn wood in a refinery for the fastest charcoal, overfeed furnaces with wood, automate output with industrial conveyors
Never run short on boom.
  • Mix your gunpowder. 20 charcoal instead of 30 is the single biggest charcoal saving in the game.
  • Overfeed wood. Extra wood in a furnace is never wasted, it just becomes charcoal. Leave the furnace running after the ore is done if you need more.
  • Run a refinery. If you have crude, a Small Oil Refinery gives you low grade and charcoal in one go.
  • Automate it. Industrial conveyors can pull charcoal and smelted ore out of a furnace into a box so it never stalls on a full output slot.
  • Store it next to your sulfur. Keep charcoal, sulfur and a Mixing Table in the same room so turning them into gunpowder is one trip.
  • Do not burn low grade. Low grade fuel powers lanterns and the refinery, but it does not make charcoal. Only wood does.
  • Plan for wipe day. Charcoal is deleted with everything else on a wipe. Our home page shows when the next force wipe is.

Rust Charcoal FAQ

How do you get charcoal in Rust?

Burn wood. Put wood in the fuel slot of a furnace, Large Furnace, campfire, BBQ, stone fireplace or Small Oil Refinery and turn it on. Each piece of wood that burns has about a 75% chance to leave one charcoal in the output slots.

How much charcoal do you get per wood in Rust?

About 0.75 charcoal per wood on average, so 1,000 wood gives roughly 750 charcoal. The rate is the same in every wood-burning oven.

What is the fastest way to make charcoal in Rust?

A Small Oil Refinery. It burns about 40 wood a minute, so a stack of 1,000 wood takes about 25 minutes, against about 33 minutes in a standard furnace and over 2 hours in a campfire. Running several furnaces at once also works.

Does the electric furnace make charcoal?

No. The Electric Furnace runs on power and burns no wood, so it makes no charcoal. Keep at least one wood furnace or refinery running if you need gunpowder.

How much charcoal is needed for gunpowder in Rust?

30 charcoal and 20 sulfur make 10 gunpowder at a Workbench Level 1. At a Mixing Table it takes 20 charcoal and 20 sulfur for the same 10 gunpowder.

How much charcoal is a C4 in Rust?

3,000 charcoal with workbench gunpowder, or 2,000 if you mix the gunpowder at a Mixing Table. That is roughly 4,000 or 2,700 wood burnt.

Can you craft charcoal in Rust?

No. Charcoal has no recipe or blueprint. It only comes from burning wood, harvesting wreck debris and recycling gunpowder.

What is the charcoal stack size in Rust?

1,000 per slot. The shortname is charcoal and the item ID is -1938052175.
