The Metal Vertical Embrasure is a sheet of corrugated metal that you fix over a window to turn it into two tall, narrow firing slits. It is how you keep a window you can shoot out of while giving the enemy almost nothing to aim at.
This metal vertical embrasure Rust guide covers what it costs, how to get the blueprint, how to place it, how it differs from the horizontal embrasure, the cheapest way to raid it, how it compares with window bars and wood shutters, its upkeep, and the best ways to use it in a base.
Metal Vertical Embrasure Cost
The embrasure is cheap in materials, but it needs a Workbench 2, so most groups add them once the base is past the starter stage.
| Stat | Metal Vertical Embrasure |
|---|---|
| Craft cost | 100 metal fragments |
| Workbench | Workbench 2 |
| Craft time | 10 seconds at a Workbench 2, 5 seconds at a Workbench 3 |
| Health | 500 HP |
| Research cost | 15 scrap |
| Stack size | 20 |
| Recycler | 60 metal fragments at a powered monument recycler (50 with the Power Plant offline, 75 at a red recycler, 40 at a safe zone) |
| Upkeep | 10 to 33 metal fragments a day |
| Decay | 8 hours with no upkeep |
| Dropped item despawn | 5 minutes |
| Item shortname | shutter.metal.embrasure.b (ID -1199897172) |
Covering the eight windows of a 2×2 base costs 800 metal fragments, four times the price of metal window bars for the same windows. That is why most players only put embrasures on the windows they actually fight from.
Metal Vertical Embrasure Blueprint
The embrasure is not a default blueprint. Put one into a research table with 15 scrap and you learn it for the rest of the wipe. The embrasure is used up.
15 scrap is the 2026 price for a common item. Research and tech tree prices were cut in the November 2025 update, so older guides that say 20 scrap are out of date. The vertical and horizontal embrasures are separate blueprints, so learning one does not unlock the other.
How to Place a Metal Vertical Embrasure
- Open the Building Plan, pick Window from the wall options and place it like a normal wall.
- Upgrade the window wall with a hammer. The embrasure only covers the opening, so a twig or wood window wall is still the easy way in.
- Window bars or a glass window can stay in the opening. The embrasure is a separate cover that sits over the window.
- Hold the Metal Vertical Embrasure and aim at the window to place it. Keep metal fragments in your tool cupboard so it does not decay.
The embrasure is static. Unlike wood shutters, it never opens or closes, so the two slits are always there for you to shoot out of, and always there for the enemy to shoot in. It does not fit doorways or wall frames. For how window walls fit into a full base, see the Rust building guide.
Vertical vs Horizontal Embrasure
Rust has two metal embrasures. They cost the same, have the same health and take the same explosives. The only difference is the shape of the gap.
| Vertical embrasure | Horizontal embrasure | |
|---|---|---|
| Gap | Two tall, thin slits | One long, low slit |
| Best for | Aiming down at the ground below, tight angles | Tracking players running across open ground |
| Exposure | Smaller target from the side | Wider gap, easier to hit you from more angles |
| Cost and HP | 100 metal fragments, Workbench 2, 500 HP, 2 C4 | |
Many bases mix them: vertical embrasures on upper floors and peek towers where you aim down at your door, horizontal ones where you watch a wide compound.
Metal Vertical Embrasure Raid Cost
| Tool | Amount | Sulfur |
|---|---|---|
| Incendiary Rocket | 2 | 600 (cheapest) |
| Molotov Cocktail | 14 | – |
| Explosive 5.56 Rifle Ammo | 167 | 4,175 |
| Timed Explosive Charge (C4) | 2 | 4,400 |
| Rocket | 4 | 5,600 |
| High Velocity Rocket | 31 | 6,200 |
| Satchel Charge | 13 | 6,240 |
| Beancan Grenade | 59 | 7,080 |
| 40mm HE Grenade | 28 | – |
| MLRS Rocket | 3 | – |
| Jackhammer (hits) | 44 | – |
The embrasure is a deployable cover, not a building block, and it takes fire damage. That makes incendiary rockets and molotovs far cheaper against it than against the metal window bars behind it. Breaking the embrasure only removes the cover, though: any window bars or glass in the opening still have to be raided separately. Compare every wall and door in the raid calculator, or see all explosives in the Rust explosives guide.
Metal Vertical Embrasure vs Bars and Shutters
| Option | Cost | Bench | HP | Opens | C4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wood Shutters | 200 wood | None | 200 | Yes | 1 |
| Metal Vertical Embrasure | 100 metal fragments | Workbench 2 | 500 | No | 2 |
| Metal Horizontal Embrasure | 100 metal fragments | Workbench 2 | 500 | No | 2 |
| Metal Window Bars | 25 metal fragments | Workbench 1 | 500 | No | 2 |
| Reinforced Glass Window | 4 high quality metal | Workbench 3 | 500 | No | 2 |
Bars and glass fill the window opening; shutters and embrasures cover it from the outside. That means you can stack them. A window with metal bars and a vertical embrasure gives you a narrow slit to fight from, and raiders have to break two pieces to climb in. If you want a window you can fully close between fights, wood shutters are the only option that opens and closes. If you only want to look out, the strengthened glass window is see-through and bulletproof.
Metal Vertical Embrasure Upkeep and Decay
Each embrasure adds 10 to 33 metal fragments a day to your upkeep, depending on how big the base is. Without upkeep it decays in about 8 hours. Repair it with a hammer, which uses metal fragments. If you drop one on the ground it despawns after just 5 minutes, so do not leave spares lying around.
Best Ways to Use a Metal Vertical Embrasure
- Shooting floors. Put vertical embrasures on roof rooms and peek windows over your door, where you aim down at raiders.
- Keep the bars. Leave metal window bars in the opening behind the embrasure so breaking the embrasure does not open the window.
- Fear fire. Two incendiary rockets remove an embrasure. Keep spares in a box nearby and replace them during an online defence.
- Scout from it. The slit is small enough that you can watch raiders set up without giving them a big target.
- Mix both types. Use horizontal embrasures where you need a wide view of a compound.
- No loot windows. Keep loot rooms solid. A window wall is no stronger than the wall around it. Upgrade the wall itself to sheet metal or armored with the rest of the base.
Metal Vertical Embrasure Rust FAQ
How much does a metal vertical embrasure cost in Rust?
100 metal fragments at a Workbench 2. It takes 10 seconds to craft, or 5 seconds at a Workbench 3.
How much HP does a metal vertical embrasure have?
500 HP, the same as metal window bars and the horizontal embrasure.
How do you raid a metal vertical embrasure?
The cheapest way is 2 incendiary rockets (600 sulfur) or 14 molotov cocktails, because the embrasure takes fire damage. It also takes 2 C4, 4 rockets, 13 satchel charges or 167 explosive 5.56 rounds.
What is the difference between the vertical and horizontal embrasure?
Only the shape of the gap. The vertical embrasure has two tall, thin slits and the horizontal embrasure has one long, low slit. Cost, health and raid cost are the same.
Can you open or close a metal embrasure?
No. Metal embrasures are static covers that are always open at the slit. Wood shutters are the only window cover that opens and closes.
Can you put window bars and an embrasure on the same window?
Yes. Bars or glass fill the window opening and the embrasure covers it from outside, so you can have both. Raiders then have to break both to get in.
How do you get the metal vertical embrasure blueprint?
Research one at a research table for 15 scrap. The embrasure is used up and the blueprint lasts the whole wipe.
How much upkeep does a metal vertical embrasure cost?
10 to 33 metal fragments a day from the tool cupboard, depending on the size of your base. Without upkeep it decays in about 8 hours.
