High External Wall Rust: Cost, HP, Raid Cost & Upkeep (2026)

Rust building guide, 2026

Every big base on a Rust server ends up behind a ring of tall palisades or grey stone slabs. Those are high external walls, and they are the fastest way to turn open ground into a compound that only your group can walk into. They also got two real changes recently: they now craft three at a time, and since the August 2026 Power Trip update they cost upkeep from your tool cupboard.

This high external wall Rust guide covers both walls and both gates: crafting cost, health, how many explosives each one takes, the new upkeep rule, upgrading wood to stone in place, and how to lay out a compound that is actually worth the stone. If you want the normal building block instead, our stone wall guide covers that one.

TL;DR Rust has two high external walls and two matching gates, and all four have 500 HP. The High External Wooden Wall crafts three for 4,000 wood at a Workbench Level 1. The High External Stone Wall crafts three for 4,000 stone and a sheet metal at a Workbench Level 2. Gates cost 3,000 wood and 2 gears, or 3,000 stone and 5 gears. A wooden high wall takes 2 C4 or 7 molotovs; a stone one takes 2 C4, 4 rockets or 10 satchels and ignores fire. Since August 2026 each piece adds a static 20% upkeep to the tool cupboard that covers it.

What Are High External Walls in Rust?

High external walls are tall deployable walls that you place straight on the ground, outside your base. They are not building blocks: you craft them at a workbench, put them in your hotbar and place them like any other deployable. They can’t go on foundations, they need fairly level terrain, and each segment snaps to the next so you can run a continuous line around a base, a farm or a quarry.

Their job is simple. They stop people walking up to your base, they soak up the first explosives a raid team spends, and they give you a yard to park vehicles, run farms and fight from. A high external gate is the door in that ring. It takes a key lock or a code lock just like a door.

There is no metal or armored high wall, and there never has been. If you want a perimeter that is genuinely hard to break, that is what a building block shell upgraded to sheet metal is for.

High External Wall Stats

The number that surprises most players is health. Wood and stone have exactly the same 500 HP. What changes is how much damage each explosive does to them, which is why stone costs so much more sulfur to break and why fire does nothing to it.

High External Wall Crafting Cost

In January 2025 Facepunch changed the walls to craft in batches of three, so one craft now gives you three segments for 4,000 wood or 4,000 stone. That works out to about 1,333 per wall. The stone version also picked up one sheet metal per craft at the same time. Gates did not change: one gate per craft.

High external wall crafting cost in Rust: wooden wall 4,000 wood for three, wooden gate 3,000 wood and 2 gears, stone wall 4,000 stone and 1 sheet metal for three, stone gate 3,000 stone and 5 gears
Walls come out three at a time. Gates are one at a time and need gears.
  • High External Wooden Wall: 4,000 wood for three walls at a Workbench Level 1.
  • High External Wooden Gate: 3,000 wood and 2 gears at a Workbench Level 1.
  • High External Stone Wall: 4,000 stone and 1 sheet metal for three walls at a Workbench Level 2.
  • High External Stone Gate: 3,000 stone and 5 gears at a Workbench Level 2.

None of them are default blueprints. Unlock the wooden pieces on the Workbench 1 tech tree and the stone pieces on the Workbench 2 tree, or learn a found one at a research table for 60 scrap (wooden) or 120 scrap (stone). See our blueprints guide for how the tech tree works.

Where the stone comes from A full ring of stone walls eats stone fast. The Stone Quarry gives 5,000 stone per diesel, so a full stack of 20 diesel (100,000 stone) is about 75 stone walls, with no tool wear at all.

High External Wall Raid Cost

These are the numbers per wall or gate. Gates take the same damage as the wall of their tier, so a gate is never the cheap way in. It is only the obvious one.

High external wall raid cost in Rust: wooden wall 2 C4, 3 rockets, 6 satchels, 98 explosive ammo or 7 molotovs; stone wall 2 C4, 4 rockets, 10 satchels or 185 explosive ammo
Fire is the cheapest way through wood. C4 is the cheapest way through stone.
ExplosiveWooden wall or gateStone wall or gate
C42 (4,400 sulfur)2 (4,400 sulfur) Cheapest
Rockets3 (4,200 sulfur)4 (5,600 sulfur)
Satchel charges6 (2,880 sulfur)10 (4,800 sulfur)
Explosive 5.56 ammo98 (2,450 sulfur)185 (4,625 sulfur)
Beancan grenades2646
Molotov cocktails7 (no sulfur) CheapestNo damage
Incendiary rocket1No damage

Two things stand out. The wooden wall is a fire problem, not an explosives problem: seven molotovs or a single incendiary rocket will take a segment down, and fire spreads along the line. And on stone, a whole C4 barely finishes the job, so two C4 per wall is the number to plan around. Run your own numbers in our raid calculator.

Most raiders don’t blow the wall at all A wooden ladder on the outside, or a siege tower, puts a raider on top of the wall for a tiny fraction of the sulfur. High walls buy you time and noise. They are not a vault.

Wooden vs Stone High Walls

Same health, same size, very different raid cost. Wood is cheap and fast, needs only a level 1 workbench, and is fine for the first night of a wipe. But a raider with a few molotovs walks straight through it. Stone costs the same amount in stone as wood does in wood, needs a level 2 workbench, and forces raiders to spend real sulfur.

Wooden vs stone high external wall in Rust: both 500 HP, wood burns and falls to 7 molotovs, stone is immune to fire and takes 2 C4, and wooden walls can be upgraded to stone with the hammer
Wood burns. Stone doesn’t. And you no longer have to tear wood down to go stone.

You also no longer have to pick up and replace your wooden ring. Since January 2025, a wooden high wall or gate can be upgraded to stone in place with the hammer, just like a building block. Each upgrade uses up one crafted stone wall (or stone gate) from your inventory, so craft the stone versions first, then walk the line with the hammer.

High External Wall Upkeep and Decay

For years, high walls were free to keep. That ended with the Power Trip update on August 6, 2026. Now every high external wall and gate inside a tool cupboard’s range adds a static 20% upkeep, paid in wood for the wooden pieces and in stone for the stone pieces. That is about 267 wood or stone per wall and 600 per gate every day. That is double the 10% a small base pays per building block, which is exactly what Facepunch intended: walling off whole monuments and quarries is now expensive.

High external wall upkeep in Rust since the August 2026 Power Trip update: a static 20 percent upkeep per wall or gate drawn from the tool cupboard, paid in wood or stone
Each wall and gate now draws from your tool cupboard. Out of range, they decay.

Walls outside any cupboard’s range still decay, just like before. The old fix of dotting tiny TC shacks around the perimeter still works to stop decay, but every shack now has to be stocked. So before you craft a huge ring, count the segments and check you can feed the tool cupboard for them every day. Our decay guide explains how upkeep scales with base size.

How to Build a High Wall Compound

A good compound is a ring of stone high walls, one gate, and something watching both. The layout matters more than the number of walls.

How a high external wall compound works in Rust: one locked gate, a code lock, auto turrets covering the wall tops, and ladders as the main threat
One gate, one lock, and turrets on the tops. Ladders are the real threat.
  1. Pick the ground first. High walls need fairly level terrain and can’t sit on foundations, so walk the line before you craft.
  2. Leave a gap to the base. A wall touching your base is a free climb onto your roof. Keep a few metres of yard between them.
  3. Use one gate. Every gate is a door raiders can target. Put a code lock on it the moment it goes down.
  4. Cover the tops. Auto turrets or shotgun traps that can see the top edge punish anyone laddering over.
  5. Stock the cupboard. Every segment now adds upkeep, so fill the TC before you log off.

High External Adobe Wall and Other Skins

Besides the two base walls, you will see a few other looks on servers. None of them change the numbers: a skin has exactly the same HP, raid cost and upkeep as the wall it reskins.

High external wall skins in Rust: the High External Adobe Wall is a stone tier skin, the Legacy Wood wall is a wood tier skin, and the High Ice Wall is a holiday event item
Adobe reskins stone, Legacy Wood reskins wood. Stats never change.
  • High External Adobe Wall and Gate: a skin for the stone high wall and gate from the Adobe Gate and Wall Pack ($9.99 in the Rust store). Earthy brown walls with barbed wire along the top and wooden gate doors. It needs the High External Stone Wall blueprint, costs the same to craft and breaks to the same 2 C4.
  • Legacy Wood Wall and Gate: a skin for the wooden high wall and gate from the Legacy Wood Gate and Wall Pack ($9.99, March 2025). It still burns like any wooden wall.
  • High External Frontier Wall and Gate: the older wooden skin from the Frontier pack, with walkways along the top instead of barbed spikes.
  • High Ice Wall: a holiday event item rather than a store skin. It takes damage like a stone high wall.
Pick the skin before you craft Wall skins have to be selected in the crafting menu before you craft. If you craft the plain wall first, the skin won’t be applied, so choose Adobe or Legacy in the skin list and then hit craft.

High External Wall Tips

Six high external wall tips in Rust: go stone early, budget upkeep, use one gate, cover the tops with turrets, upgrade wood to stone in place, and leave a gap to your base
Six rules that keep a compound worth its stone.
  • Go stone as soon as you have a Workbench 2. Wood falls to seven molotovs, which any raider can craft from cloth and low grade fuel.
  • Budget the upkeep. Every segment and gate adds 20%. A 20 wall stone ring is over 5,000 stone a day now.
  • One gate only. Two gates means two targets and double the gear cost.
  • Cover the tops. Turrets that see the top edge stop ladders, the cheapest way in.
  • Upgrade in place. Hammer the wooden ring to stone instead of tearing it down.
  • Think twice before walling a quarry. Caging a sulfur quarry used to be free to hold. With upkeep on every segment, it is now a daily bill.

High External Wall Rust FAQ

How much does a high external stone wall cost in Rust?

One craft costs 4,000 stone and 1 sheet metal and gives you three High External Stone Walls, so each wall works out to about 1,333 stone. You need a Workbench Level 2 and the blueprint from the tech tree or a research table.

How much does a high external wooden wall cost?

4,000 wood for three walls at a Workbench Level 1, or about 1,333 wood per wall. The High External Wooden Gate costs 3,000 wood and 2 gears.

How many C4 does it take to break a high external stone wall?

Two C4. It also takes 4 rockets, 10 satchel charges or 185 explosive 5.56 rounds. Fire does nothing to it. At 4,400 sulfur, two C4 is the cheapest explosive option.

How many rockets for a high external wooden wall?

Three rockets, or 2 C4, 6 satchels or 98 explosive rounds. The cheapest option is fire: about 7 molotovs or a single incendiary rocket.

Do high external walls have upkeep in Rust?

Yes, since the August 6, 2026 Power Trip update. Each high external wall and gate inside tool cupboard range adds a static 20 percent upkeep, about 267 wood or stone per wall and 600 per gate each day. Walls outside any cupboard’s range decay.

Can you upgrade a wooden high wall to stone?

Yes. Since January 2025 you can upgrade a wooden high external wall or gate to stone with the hammer, like a building block. Each upgrade uses one crafted stone wall or stone gate from your inventory.

How much HP does a high external gate have?

500 HP, the same as the wall of its tier. A wooden gate breaks like a wooden wall and a stone gate breaks like a stone wall, so the gate is not a weak spot for explosives.

What is the High External Adobe Wall in Rust?

It is a paid skin for the High External Stone Wall and Gate, sold as the Adobe Gate and Wall Pack for $9.99. It looks like earthy adobe with barbed wire on top but has the same 500 HP, crafting cost and raid cost as a normal stone high wall. Select the skin in the crafting menu before you craft.

Is there a metal high external wall in Rust?

No. There are only wooden and stone high external walls and gates, plus skins like the Adobe, Legacy Wood and Frontier walls and the High Ice Wall event item. For a harder perimeter, build a building block wall and upgrade it to sheet metal.
