Frog Boots Rust: How to Get Them, Stats, Craft Cost & Tarp Recycle (2026)

Rust clothing guide, 2026

Frog Boots are the rarest footwear in Rust. They were a thank you gift from Facepunch to every player who owned Rust during early access, handed out when the game left early access on February 8, 2018. If your account has them, you can craft a pair from 1 tarp in 1 second with no workbench. They give 5% radiation and 8% cold protection, but no bullet or melee protection at all.

This guide covers how to get Frog Boots in Rust (and why you can’t buy them), the craft cost, their exact stats, how they compare with boots, hide boots and the hazmat suit, what a recycler gives back, and when they are worth wearing.

TL;DR Frog Boots (boots.frog) are a Steam item given to accounts that played Rust in early access (before February 8, 2018). They are not tradable or marketable and are not sold anywhere, so new players can’t unlock them. Owners craft a pair from 1 tarp in 1 second with no workbench. Stats: 5% radiation, 8% cold, 0% projectile and 0% melee. Anyone can still wear a pair they loot from an owner. A monument recycler gives about a 50% chance of 1 tarp back.

What Are Frog Boots in Rust?

Frog Boots are a pair of green rubber boots with a frog face on the toe. The in-game description reads: “Thank you for playing the game through its early access run. Enjoy these boots made from radiation resistant frog rubber.”

They go in the feet slot, the same slot as Boots, Hide Boots and Burlap Shoes, so you wear one pair at a time. A hazmat suit or other full body suit covers your feet itself, so Frog Boots come off when you put one on. They are part of the wider Rust clothing system.

Frog Boots first showed up years before full release as a fun item, were pulled from the game, then came back on release day in 2018 as the official early access reward. Facepunch buffed their radiation protection at the same time, which is why they still have a small use today.

How to Get Frog Boots in Rust

How to get Frog Boots in Rust: given to every account that played during early access before February 8, 2018, not tradable, not marketable, not in the item store; anyone can wear a looted pair, and admins can spawn them
The unlock was a one time gift. The boots themselves still drop from players.

There is only one way to unlock the Frog Boots blueprint: your Steam account must have played Rust during early access. When Rust officially left early access on February 8, 2018, Facepunch awarded the boots to every account that had played the game up to then. Owners know the blueprint by default on every server, every wipe.

  • You can’t buy them. Frog Boots are not tradable or marketable, so they never appear on the Steam Community Market or trading sites. They are not in the Rust item store either, so our skin trading sites guide won’t help here.
  • You can’t research them. A research table won’t teach the blueprint to an account without the Steam item, and they are not on the tech tree.
  • You CAN wear a pair you find. Once crafted, Frog Boots are a normal item. If you kill an early access player wearing them, or find a pair in a raided box, you can put them on.
  • Admins can spawn them. On your own server, inventory.give boots.frog 1 gives you a pair.
Not the frog hat The Wellipets frog hat is a different item. It came from a real world Wellipets x Rust frog wellington boots collab, with a code to redeem in game. Owning that hat does not unlock the Frog Boots.

How to Craft Frog Boots

How to craft Frog Boots in Rust: 1 tarp makes 1 pair of Frog Boots in 1 second with no workbench, but only if your Steam account owns the Frog Boots item
One tarp, one second, no bench.
  1. Check you own them. Open your crafting menu and look in the Attire tab. If Frog Boots show up, your account has the early access item.
  2. Get 1 tarp. Tarp is loot only. Barrels, basic crates and underwater crates are the best sources, see our Rust tarp guide.
  3. Craft anywhere. No workbench is needed, and the craft takes 1 second.
Watch your tarp Tarp is scarce and a hazmat suit needs 4 of them. One tarp for 5% radiation is fine on wipe day, but once you are saving for hazmat, every tarp counts.

Frog Boots Protection

Rust Frog Boots protection stats: 5% radiation, 8% cold, 0% projectile and 0% melee, compared with regular boots at 10% projectile and 10% melee
Good against rads and cold, useless against bullets.

Frog Boots give 5% radiation and 8% cold protection and nothing else. That is more radiation protection than regular Boots (3%) or Hide Boots (2%), and the same 8% cold as Boots.

They give 0% projectile and 0% melee protection. In a fight, Frog Boots are the same as bare feet. Armor in Rust only protects the body part it covers, and feet are a small target, so it rarely decides a fight, but regular boots still take 10% off every foot shot.

Frog Boots vs Other Footwear

Rust footwear compared: Burlap Shoes about 5% bullet for 10 cloth, Hide Boots 5% bullet and 2% radiation for 10 leather, Boots 10% bullet and 3% radiation at a Workbench 2, Frog Boots 0% bullet and 5% radiation for 1 tarp
The best radiation boots, and the worst fighting boots.

Burlap ShoesAbout 5%About 5%LowLow10 cloth, no bench
Hide Boots5%5%2%5%10 leather, no bench
Boots10%10%3%8%20 leather, 15 frags, 1 sewing kit, WB2
Frog Boots0%0%5%8%1 tarp, no bench, Steam item

For PvP, regular Boots win every time, and you can buy them at Outpost for 20 scrap. Frog Boots only make sense when radiation or cold is the threat and you are not expecting a gunfight, or when you just want to show off a 2018 account.

When to Wear Frog Boots

When to wear Frog Boots in Rust: wipe day radtown runs before you have a hazmat suit, the snow biome for 8% cold, and as a flex item from an early access account; swap to boots for PvP
Low rad monuments and snow are where they earn their slot.
  • Early rad runs. Before you have a hazmat suit, 5% radiation on your feet stacks with a burlap set and helps at low radiation monuments like the Train Yard or Water Treatment Plant. For high radiation spots like Military Tunnels, you still need a hazmat suit.
  • Snow biome. 8% cold with no penalty, for 1 tarp and no workbench, beats freezing on wipe day.
  • Wipe day. No workbench and a 1 second craft means you can put them on in your first minute if you find a tarp.
  • Not for PvP. Swap to Boots before a raid or roam. 0% bullet protection is a real gap in a full metal kit.

Recycling Frog Boots

Recycling Frog Boots in Rust: about a 50% chance of 1 tarp at a monument recycler, 60% when grid powered, 75% at the Power Plant and 40% at a safe zone recycler
A coin flip for your tarp back.

A recycler turns Frog Boots back into a chance at 1 tarp. The odds follow the recycler’s efficiency: about 50% at a normal monument recycler, 60% when it is grid powered, 75% at the Power Plant’s red recycler and 40% at a safe zone recycler. Because owners can craft a new pair any time, recycling spares you loot from other players is a cheap way to fish for tarp.

Frog Boots Tips

Rust Frog Boots tips: check your attire tab, don't waste tarp you need for hazmat, never PvP in them, recycle looted pairs for tarp, they never break, and take them off for a hazmat suit
Small habits for the rarest boots in Rust.
  • Check your attire tab. Many players who bought Rust before 2018 forget they own them.
  • Save tarp for hazmat. A hazmat suit (4 tarp, 2 sewing kits, 7 HQM) gives 50% radiation, ten times more than Frog Boots.
  • Never PvP in them. 0% bullet and melee protection. Wear Boots instead.
  • They never break. Frog Boots have no durability, so you never need to repair or replace them.
  • Recycle looted pairs. If you kill a Frog Boots owner and don’t want to wear them, the recycler may give you a tarp.
  • Plan around the wipe. Owners keep the blueprint through every BP wipe. Check when the next force wipe is.
