Rust has two tops that players just call the shirt: the collared Shirt and the Longsleeve T-Shirt. Both are cloth-only chest pieces made at a Workbench 1, both sit under your jacket or armor, and both are far better than walking around bare-chested after wipe.
This Rust shirt guide covers the craft cost and blueprint for each, the exact protection numbers, which one to wear and when, what to put over it, where to find one, and what you get back from a recycler.

What Is the Shirt in Rust?
The Shirt (shortname shirt.collared) is a button-up collared top. The game describes it as “a smart casual shirt” that “might make you look more trustworthy”. Under the joke, it is the strongest top you can make at a Workbench 1.
The Longsleeve T-Shirt (shortname tshirt.long) is a plain long-sleeved tee. It trades a little bullet protection for more warmth, so it is the pick for snow and night roams.
Rust gives the chest two clothing layers. The under-layer is one top: a Shirt, Longsleeve, T-Shirt, Tank Top, Hoodie, BDU Shirt, burlap shirt or hide vest. The outer layer is a jacket, poncho or chest armor. You wear one of each and their protection adds up. The Snow Jacket is the exception: it fills both chest layers, so no shirt goes under it. You cannot wear a Shirt and a Longsleeve together, because they fill the same slot. Our Rust clothing guide lists every piece in both layers.

How to Craft a Shirt in Rust
- Get the blueprint. Research a looted or bought copy at a research table (40 scrap for the Shirt, 15 for the Longsleeve), or unlock it on the Workbench 1 tech tree.
- Stand near a Workbench 1. Both tops are Workbench Level 1 items. A Workbench 1 costs 500 wood and 100 metal fragments.
- Gather cloth. 25 for the Shirt, 30 for the Longsleeve. Pick hemp, skin animals, or recycle spare clothing. Our Rust cloth guide lists every source.
- Craft it. It takes 15 seconds, and a higher workbench speeds it up.
Because neither top needs a sewing kit, they never compete with your pants, kilt or hoodie for kits. That is the main reason to run one early.
Shirt Protection in Rust
Protection only counts where you are hit. A shirt covers the torso and arms, so it does nothing for a headshot or a leg shot. Every bullet, arrow or melee swing that lands on your chest or arms is cut by 17% with the Shirt or 15% with the Longsleeve.
Two percent sounds small, but the torso is where most shots land, and it carries over when you add armor on top. For cold, the Longsleeve’s 10% is the most any Workbench 1 top gives, and a Snow Jacket gives 30% on its own, but it replaces the shirt, because it fills both chest layers.
Neither is a radiation piece. At 5 to 6% radiation, you still want a Hazmat Suit for monuments with real rads.
Shirt or Longsleeve: Which Should You Wear?
- Fighting, raiding, roaming: the Shirt. 17% bullets is the best you get before a Workbench 2 hoodie.
- Snow biome or night farming: the Longsleeve. 10% cold keeps you warm without a snow jacket on short trips.
- Desert: the T-Shirt or the Shirt. Low cold protection keeps you from overheating.
- Cheapest blueprint: the Longsleeve at 20 scrap, and Outpost sells it, so it is easy to get one to research.
Shirt vs Every Other Rust Top
| Top | Bullet | Melee | Cold | How to get it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shirt | 17% | 15% | 6% | 25 cloth, WB1 |
| Longsleeve T-Shirt | 15% | 15% | 10% | 30 cloth, WB1 |
| T-Shirt | 15% | 15% | 6% | 25 cloth, WB1 |
| Tank Top | Light summer top | 20 cloth, no workbench | ||
| Hoodie | 20% | 15% | 8% | 40 cloth + 1 sewing kit, WB2 |
| BDU Shirt | 23% | 20% | 5% | Loot only |
| Burlap Shirt | 10% | 10% | 7% | 20 cloth, no workbench |
The Shirt is the best top you can craft at a Workbench 1. Once you have a Workbench 2 and a spare sewing kit, the hoodie takes over. The BDU Shirt beats everything but only comes from loot.
What to Wear Over a Shirt
| Outer layer | With the Shirt | With the Longsleeve |
|---|---|---|
| Jacket (WB1) | 32% bullet | 30% bullet |
| Road Sign Jacket | 37% bullet | 35% bullet |
| Metal Chest Plate (WB3) | 42% bullet | 40% bullet |
| Ballistic Vest (loot) | 52% bullet | 50% bullet |

How to Get a Shirt in Rust
- Craft it. Once you know the blueprint, it is just cloth and a Workbench 1.
- Buy a Longsleeve. The clothing vending machine at Outpost sells t-shirts, longsleeves, snow jackets, boots and tactical gloves for scrap. It does not sell the collared Shirt.
- Loot the Shirt. It is a rare drop: about 0.4% from brown crates, wagon crates and Underwater Lab crates, about 1% from sunken chests, and about 0.2% from scientists and tunnel dwellers. You are better off researching one than farming for it.
Recycling a Shirt in Rust
| Recycler | Shirt | Longsleeve |
|---|---|---|
| Safe zone (40%) | 10 cloth | 12 cloth |
| Monument, unpowered (50%) | 12-13 cloth | 15 cloth |
| Monument, powered (60%) | 15 cloth | 18 cloth |
| Power Plant (75%) | 18-19 cloth | 22-23 cloth |
Neither top gives scrap. Recycle spares only when you need the cloth back. Rates are explained in our recycler guide.
Rust Shirt Tips
- Research the Shirt early. 40 scrap for 2% more bullet protection than a t-shirt at the same 25 cloth.
- Keep a Longsleeve for the snow. Swap it in for cold trips instead of burning sewing kits on a snow jacket.
- Save your sewing kits. Spend them on pants, boots or a hoodie while a cloth-only shirt covers your chest.
- Always add an outer layer. A shirt on its own is cheap; a shirt under a road sign jacket or chest plate is a real kit.
- Keep spares by your bag. A few shirts in a box next to your sleeping bag means you never run out bare-chested.
- Remember the wipe. Clothing, blueprints and your base all reset. Check when the next Rust force wipe is.
