Sandbag Update Rust: 4 Stages, Bunker & Upgrade Rules (2026)

Rust update guide, October 2026

The humble sandbag barricade has barely changed in years. You craft it, you drop it, it soaks a few bullets, and then someone with a double barrel walks through it. The sandbag update in Rust changes that. Sandbags now upgrade in place across four build stages, and the last stage is a sandbag bunker with a firing window you can actually fight from.

This sandbag update Rust guide covers everything confirmed so far: how the four stages work, how upgrading and the new placement guides behave, the rules that stop people from abusing it, what the base barricade costs, and where the new bunker is worth building. If you are catching up on the whole October patch, our Livestock Rust update guide covers the animals, and our milk and cream guide covers the new dairy teas.

The sandbag rework was tested on the September 2026 staging branch and reported in Rustafied’s patch roundup. It is expected to go live with the October 1, 2026 force wipe. Staging details can change before then, and we will update this page if they do.

TL;DR Sandbag barricades now have four build stages. You place a normal sandbag, then upgrade it in place into bigger stacked versions, ending with a bunker that has a firing window. A placement guide shows where each upgrade will go and warns you if your spot would block a future upgrade. Skins carry across every stage, upgrades can’t clip through nearby objects, damaged sandbags keep their health percentage (no free repair), and a recently damaged sandbag can’t be upgraded. Sandbags on player boats can be upgraded too, and the bunker has a no-build zone around it.

What Is the Sandbag Update in Rust?

Before this update, a sandbag barricade was one fixed object. If you wanted more cover, you placed more barricades next to each other and hoped the gaps lined up. The sandbag update turns the barricade into the first step of a small building system.

  • One item, four stages. You still craft and place a standard sandbag barricade. From there you build it up into larger stacked configurations, instead of crafting each size as its own item.
  • A real bunker at the top. The final stage is a sandbag bunker with a firing window, so you can shoot out while most of your body stays behind the bags.
  • Smarter placement. A placement guide shows where each upgrade will end up, and warns you when your chosen spot would stop a later upgrade from fitting.
  • Anti-abuse rules. Upgrades can’t clip through things, can’t be used as a free repair, and can’t be done in the middle of a fight.

It’s a small change on paper, but it gives Rust something it has been missing: fast, cheap field fortification you can grow as a fight drags on. It sits between a throwaway barricade and a full stone wall.

The Four Sandbag Stages Explained

Every upgraded sandbag starts life as the barricade you already know. Here is how the four stages line up, based on the staging notes.

StageWhat you getBest for
1. StandardThe normal sandbag barricade, crafted and placed as beforeQuick cover in a roam or a monument
2. UpgradedThe placed barricade built up into a bigger stackMore cover without moving your spot
3. UpgradedA larger stacked configurationHolding a position for a long fight
4. Bunker NewA sandbag bunker with a firing windowShooting from cover at a hold point

Not confirmed yet The staging notes describe the stages but don’t list exact dimensions or the resource cost of each upgrade. Check the cost in game after the October 1 wipe before you plan a big sandbag compound around it.

How to Upgrade Sandbags in Rust

Upgrading works on a sandbag that is already placed. The process is short:

  1. Place a standard sandbag barricade where you want cover. It’s a Level 1 blueprint, so every player can make one early in the wipe.
  2. Read the placement guide. While placing, the guide shows where each future upgrade will sit.
  3. Watch for the warning. If your spot would stop a later stage from fitting, the guide tells you before you commit. Move it a little and try again.
  4. Upgrade it in place, one stage at a time, until you reach the size you need or the bunker.

The upgrade flow: place, check the guide, heed the warning, upgrade.
Tip Always place the first sandbag with the bunker in mind, even if you only want stage 2 right now. The warning exists because a sandbag that fits today may be blocked by a rock, a wall or a deployable when you try to go bigger mid-fight.

Sandbag Upgrade Rules You Need to Know

Facepunch added a set of rules so the upgrade can’t be exploited. These matter more than the shapes, because they decide when you can and can’t build up.

Six Rust sandbag upgrade rules: skins, clipping, health, combat lock, boats and no-build zone
Six rules from the staging notes.
RuleWhat it means for you
Skins carry overYour sandbag skin moves to every stage, and it now stays on the pieces left behind when a sandbag is destroyed.
No clippingAn upgrade can’t push through nearby objects, so you can’t use it to reach into a base or through a wall.
Health percentage is keptA sandbag at half health is still at half health after an upgrade. Upgrading is not a free repair.
No upgrading while damagedA sandbag that was recently damaged can’t be upgraded straight away. You can’t grow cover in the middle of a shootout.
Works on boatsSandbags placed on player-built boats can be upgraded as well.
Bunker no-build zoneA building-prevention volume sits around the sandbag bunker, so nobody can build right up against it.

The damage lock is the big one for PvP. It means the upgrade is a set-up tool, not a panic button. Build your bunker before the fight, not during it. The health rule works the same way: if a sandbag is chewed up, you are better off repairing it with a hammer first.

Sandbag Barricade Stats (Stage 1)

The base barricade hasn’t been reworked in cost, as far as the staging notes show. These are the current stage 1 values:

StatValue
Crafting cost50 Stone + 5 Cloth
Health200
WorkbenchLevel 1 blueprint, open to all players
Weak toMelee weapons and shotguns
Blocks ladders? No. Barricades can’t block ladders
Stops raiders? No. Players can jump over a standard sandbag
Rust sandbag barricade stats: 50 stone, 5 cloth, 200 health, workbench level 1
Stage 1 is the same barricade players already use.

Cloth is the part that slows people down early. If you are short, our cloth farming guide has the fastest routes. Stone comes easily from nodes and the stone quarry.

The Sandbag Bunker (Stage 4)

The bunker is the headline of the sandbag update. It’s the last stage of a normal sandbag barricade and it adds a firing window: a gap in the bags you can shoot through while the rest of you stays covered.

The bunker: a firing window, built from sandbags, with a no-build zone around it.

Two details make it work in real fights:

  • The no-build zone. Because nobody can build tight against the bunker, enemies can’t wall off your window with a cheap twig wall or a barricade.
  • It’s still a sandbag. It keeps the sandbag’s weaknesses. Explosives, melee and shotguns will still go through it, so treat it as cover, not as a base.

Don’t confuse the sandbag bunker with a base-building bunker design. Those are layouts that stop raiders using the tool cupboard path. The sandbag bunker is a field position you shoot from.

Where to Build Upgraded Sandbags

Best places to build upgraded sandbags in Rust: monuments, boats, compounds and roams
Four places the new sandbags earn their cost.

Monument holds

This is where the bunker shines. At a crate spot or a puzzle room exit you need to hold for minutes, a stage 4 bunker gives you a window to shoot through while the loot room timer runs. It’s a good fit for Launch Site, Military Tunnels and the open ground around Airfield. Read up on monument blockers too: since the Breach and Clear update, destructible barricades sit on some routes into red keycard puzzle rooms, so plan your hold around them.

Boat decks

Sandbags on player-built boats can be upgraded, which turns a deck into a floating firing position. If you are building one, start with our Rust boat building guide. A RHIB is still the faster raiding boat.

Your compound

Inside your base walls, upgraded sandbags give defenders cover between the wall and the door. Pair them with an auto turret or two so you aren’t the only thing shooting back.

Roam fights

A standard sandbag is still the fastest cover you can throw down. In a long fight, build it up before the enemy starts shooting at it, because of the damage lock.

How to Break Sandbags in Rust

More stages mean more cover, but sandbags are still soft. The stage 1 barricade has 200 health and is weak to melee and shotguns. The health of stages 2 to 4 wasn’t in the staging notes.

  • Shotguns: a double barrel is the classic sandbag counter, and it still is.
  • Explosives: don’t waste satchels on a stage 1 sandbag. A higher stage bunker at a monument may be worth one. Our explosives guide and raid calculator show the sulfur costs.
  • Flanking: the bunker only covers what it faces. Go around it.
Tip Because a damaged sandbag can’t be upgraded for a while, a few shots into an enemy’s stage 1 sandbag stops them from turning it into a bunker. Chip it early.

When Does the Sandbag Update Come Out?

The sandbag rework is part of the October 2026 update, which ships with the monthly force wipe on Thursday, October 1, 2026 at about 18:00 UTC (19:00 UK time, 2 PM ET, 11 AM PT). Check the live timer on our force wipe countdown.

Sandbag Update Pro Tips

  1. Build before the fight. The damage lock means you can’t upgrade under fire.
  2. Plan for stage 4. Trust the placement warning. Moving a sandbag half a step now saves a failed upgrade later.
  3. Repair, then upgrade. Health percentage carries over, so fix a damaged sandbag before you build it up.
  4. Skin it once. Your skin follows every stage and stays on the rubble, so it’s worth putting on.
  5. Keep the window facing the threat. A bunker is only strong in the direction it faces.
  6. Don’t rely on it for base defence. It’s cover, not a wall. Use stone or metal walls for anything that must stop raiders.

Sandbag Update Rust FAQ

What is the sandbag update in Rust?

The sandbag update reworks the sandbag barricade into four build stages. You place a standard sandbag, then upgrade it in place into bigger stacked versions, ending with a bunker that has a firing window.

How many sandbag stages are there in Rust?

There are four. Stage 1 is the normal barricade, stages 2 and 3 are larger stacked versions, and stage 4 is a sandbag bunker with a firing window.

How do you upgrade sandbags in Rust?

Place a standard sandbag barricade, then upgrade the placed barricade one stage at a time. A placement guide shows where each upgrade will go and warns you if your spot would block a later stage.

Can you upgrade a damaged sandbag in Rust?

Not straight away. A recently damaged sandbag can’t be upgraded. When you do upgrade a damaged sandbag, it keeps its health percentage, so upgrading is not a free repair.

Do sandbag skins carry over when you upgrade?

Yes. Skins transfer to every stage, and they now stay on the pieces left behind when a sandbag is destroyed.

Can you upgrade sandbags on a boat in Rust?

Yes. Sandbag barricades placed on player-built boats can be upgraded like ones on land.

How much does a sandbag barricade cost in Rust?

A standard sandbag barricade costs 50 stone and 5 cloth and needs a Level 1 workbench, down from 100 stone and 10 cloth before the October 2026 update. The cost of each upgrade stage wasn’t listed in the staging notes.

When does the sandbag update come out in Rust?

It’s expected with the October 2026 update, which ships with the force wipe on Thursday, October 1, 2026 at about 18:00 UTC.
