The Salvaged Hammer is the cheapest way to break into a base without sulfur. It costs 50 metal fragments and one metal pipe, and it hits deployables and metal doors harder than any other melee tool in Rust. It is a poor gathering tool, but as a door breaker and a quick way to clear boxes, bags and barricades it has no real rival.
This Salvaged Hammer Rust guide covers the craft cost and research price, its damage and gather stats, how many hammers and how long it takes to melee raid each door, what else it breaks fast, how it compares with the other melee tools, and the tips that make a hammer raid work. It also covers the new model and animations it got in the September 2026 Breach and Clear update.

What Is the Salvaged Hammer in Rust?
The Salvaged Hammer is a two-handed blunt tool. The in-game description calls it “a Hammer made from a bunch of other crap”: a heavy head welded onto a metal pipe. Do not mix it up with the normal Hammer you use to upgrade and repair your base. The Salvaged Hammer cannot upgrade or repair anything. It is a weapon and a tool for breaking things.
What makes it special is its damage against deployables and doors. Swing for swing, it takes apart sheet metal doors, garage doors, ladder hatches, boxes and turrets faster than a hatchet, mace, pickaxe or sword. That makes it the standard tool for a melee raid, where you break in with tools instead of explosives because you have no sulfur yet.
In the Breach and Clear update (September 3, 2026) Facepunch gave the Salvaged Hammer a full art refresh: a new high-quality model, new textures, new animations and new sounds. The patch notes did not change its recipe or damage, so the numbers in this guide still apply.

How to Craft a Salvaged Hammer
The recipe is 50 metal fragments and 1 metal pipe, crafted at a Workbench Level 1 or higher. It takes 30 seconds at a Workbench 1, 15 at a Workbench 2 and 7 at a Workbench 3.
The fragments are easy. The metal pipe is what limits you: pipes only come from loot (barrels, crates and recycling), and the same pipes go into your guns. A melee raid on a sheet metal door burns through about 23 pipes, so save them up before you plan one.
The blueprint is not known by default. Learn it one of two ways:
- Research Table: put a Salvaged Hammer and 30 scrap in the table. Hammers turn up in normal crates, so this is usually the fastest way.
- Workbench 1 tech tree: unlock its node for 30 scrap, plus every node on the path before it. Our Rust tech tree guide explains how the paths are priced.
Melee Raiding Doors With a Salvaged Hammer
This is the job the Salvaged Hammer is made for. Each hammer breaks after a while, so the cost of a melee raid is counted in hammers used up, not swings. These are the numbers for one player hitting the door non-stop:
| Target | Salvaged Hammers | Time (1 player) | Mace | Hatchet |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wooden Door | 18 | ~17 min | 42 (~23 min) | 11 (~11 min) |
| Sheet Metal Door | 23 | ~21 min | 53 (~29 min) | 75 (~1 h 16 min) |
| Ladder Hatch | 23 | ~21 min | 53 (~29 min) | 75 (~1 h 16 min) |
| Chainlink Fence | 9 | ~8.5 min | 21 (~11.5 min) | 30 (~30 min) |
| Garage Door | 54 | ~51 min | 125 (~1 h 9 min) | 180 (~3 h) |
| Armored Door | 90 | ~1 h 25 min | 209 (~1 h 55 min) | 299 (~5 h) |
On every metal door the hammer is the fastest and the cheapest melee option. A wooden door is the one exception: a Salvaged Sword (9 swords, under 6 minutes) or a hatchet is quicker, and a single molotov or a few fire arrows are cheaper still.
Bring friends. The time drops with every player swinging, so four players with hammers break a sheet metal door in around 5 minutes. The hammer count stays the same, because the door has the same HP whoever hits it.
What the Salvaged Hammer Breaks Fast
Against deployables the hammer is about twice as fast as a hatchet, and one hammer is enough for each of these:
| Target | Salvaged Hammer | Hatchet |
|---|---|---|
| Rug | ~4 sec | ~7 sec |
| Sleeping Bag | ~7 sec | ~14 sec |
| Wooden Barricade | ~9 sec | ~18 sec |
| Large Wood Box | ~10 sec | ~21 sec |
| Twig Wall | ~13 sec | ~18 sec |
| Furnace | ~17 sec | ~36 sec |
| Auto Turret | ~34 sec | ~1 min 12 sec |
| Tool Cupboard | 6 hammers, ~5.5 min | 6 hatchets, ~5.5 min |
That makes it the tool to carry when you clear a raided base, break enemy sleeping bags near your own base or knock down a twig wall someone built to block you. It is also useful against stone walls from the soft side (11 hammers, about 10.5 minutes), though a Salvaged Icepick does that faster (7 icepicks, about 7.5 minutes).
Is the Salvaged Hammer Good for Gathering?
Not really. The Salvaged Hammer can hit both trees and ore nodes, but it only yields about as much as a Stone Hatchet or Stone Pickaxe. A plain Pickaxe, Hatchet, Salvaged Icepick, Salvaged Axe or Jackhammer all gather more for less effort.
The one handy case is when you already carry a hammer for raiding and want a little stone or metal ore on the way home without a second tool. It also works on Bradley wreckage, though a jackhammer or icepick strips it much faster.
Salvaged Hammer vs Other Melee Tools
| Tool | Cost | Best at |
|---|---|---|
| Salvaged Hammer | 50 frags + 1 metal pipe, WB1 | Metal doors, hatches, boxes, turrets, sleeping bags |
| Mace | 100 wood + 50 frags, WB1 | Backup door breaker, about half as fast as the hammer on metal |
| Salvaged Sword | 15 frags + 1 metal blade, WB1 | Wooden doors and fighting |
| Salvaged Icepick | 1 metal pipe + 5 metal blades, WB2 | Ore and soft side stone walls |
| Salvaged Axe | 1 metal pipe + 5 metal blades, WB2 | Wood and wooden targets |
| Jackhammer | Loot only | Stone walls, twig and nodes, the fastest tool of all |
A simple rule: a hammer for metal, an icepick or jackhammer for stone, and a sword or fire for wood. If you only bring one tool to a melee raid, make it the hammer, because the door is almost always metal.
Salvaged Hammer Tips
- Stockpile pipes first. Count on about 23 metal pipes for a sheet metal door. Loot roadside barrels and recycle components to collect them.
- Craft at a Workbench 3 if you can. Hammers break quickly, and a 7 second craft keeps the swings going while a teammate keeps crafting.
- Raid with a group. The hammer count stays the same, but four players cut the time to a quarter.
- Check for decay. A base with an empty tool cupboard is losing HP every hour, so the door may need far fewer hammers. Our Rust decay guide shows how fast each tier falls.
- Recycle broken hammers. A hammer with low condition still recycles into 30 metal fragments and has a 60% chance to give the pipe back.
- Swap to the right tool. Hit a wooden door with a sword or a molotov and a stone wall with an icepick. The hammer only wins on metal and deployables.
Salvaged Hammer FAQ
How do you craft a Salvaged Hammer in Rust?
A Salvaged Hammer costs 50 metal fragments and 1 metal pipe and is crafted at a Workbench Level 1. It takes 30 seconds at a Workbench 1, 15 seconds at a Workbench 2 and 7 seconds at a Workbench 3. You need the blueprint first, from a Research Table or the Workbench 1 tech tree.
How much scrap does it cost to research a Salvaged Hammer?
Researching a Salvaged Hammer costs 30 scrap at a Research Table. Its node on the Workbench 1 tech tree also costs 30 scrap, plus the nodes on the path before it.
How many Salvaged Hammers does it take to break a sheet metal door?
A sheet metal door takes 23 Salvaged Hammers and about 21 minutes for one player. A garage door takes 54 hammers (about 51 minutes) and an armored door 90 hammers (about 1 hour 25 minutes).
What is the best melee tool for raiding in Rust?
The Salvaged Hammer is the best melee tool against metal doors, ladder hatches and deployables. For stone walls from the soft side, a Salvaged Icepick or Jackhammer is faster, and for wooden doors a Salvaged Sword is quicker.
Can the Salvaged Hammer upgrade or repair buildings?
No. Only the normal Hammer upgrades, repairs and picks up building parts. The Salvaged Hammer is a melee tool for breaking things.
Is the Salvaged Hammer good for gathering?
No. It gathers wood and ore at about the same rate as a Stone Hatchet or Stone Pickaxe, so a Pickaxe, Hatchet, Salvaged Icepick or Salvaged Axe is a much better choice for farming.
What does a Salvaged Hammer recycle into?
A Salvaged Hammer recycles into 30 metal fragments and a 60% chance of 1 metal pipe at a monument recycler, or 20 metal fragments and a 40% chance of the pipe at a safe zone recycler.
Did the Salvaged Hammer change in 2026?
Yes, in looks only. The Breach and Clear update on September 3, 2026 gave the Salvaged Hammer a new model, textures, animations and sounds. Its recipe and raid numbers did not change.
What is the Salvaged Hammer item ID?
The Salvaged Hammer shortname is hammer.salvaged and its item ID is -1506397857.
