The sewing kit is the small spool of thread that quietly decides when you get out of cloth clothing and into real armor. A Metal Chest Plate needs 8 of them, a Metal Facemask needs 6, and even a hoodie, a jacket or a bed needs one or two. Run short and you are stuck in burlap while everyone around you is wearing metal.
This sewing kit Rust guide covers what it is, how to craft one, every recipe that uses it, where to loot it and at what odds, the Tactical Gloves loop for cheap kits, what it recycles into, and how many you should bank for a full armor set.
What Is the Sewing Kit in Rust?
The Sewing Kit is a component, the same class of item as rope, tarp, gears and road signs. It does nothing on its own. It sits in your boxes until a clothing or armor recipe calls for it, and almost every piece worth wearing does. That is why experienced players treat sewing kits as an armor material, not a crafting extra.
| Stat | Sewing Kit |
|---|---|
| Type | Component |
| Craft cost | 20 Cloth, 3 Rope |

How to Craft a Sewing Kit
You can craft a sewing kit, but only late. The recipe is 20 cloth and 3 rope at a Workbench Level 3, and you need the blueprint first, which costs 30 scrap at a research table if you have a kit to research. Each craft takes about a second.
Cloth is easy: hemp, animals and recycled clothing give you plenty. Rope is the real limit. It cannot be crafted, so every kit you make spends 3 rope that you had to loot, buy or recycle. A Metal Chest Plate alone hides 160 cloth and 24 rope inside its 8 kits.
What Sewing Kits Craft
More than thirty recipes use sewing kits. These are the ones you will actually craft, with the number of kits each needs.
| Item | Sewing kits | Rest of the recipe | Workbench |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metal Chest Plate | 8 | 18 HQM, 50 Leather | Level 3 |
| Metal Facemask | 6 | 15 HQM, 50 Leather | Level 3 |
| Small Backpack | 5 | 50 Cloth | Level 1 |
| Hazmat Suit | 2 | 8 HQM, 5 Tarp | Level 2 |
| Roadsign Jacket | 2 | 2 Road Signs, 20 Leather | Level 2 |
| Roadsign Kilt | 2 | 1 Road Sign, 10 Leather | Level 2 |
| Jacket | 2 | 50 Cloth | Level 1 |
| Bed | 2 | 60 Cloth, 100 Metal Fragments | Level 1 |
| Ninja Suit / Surgeon Scrubs | 2 | 60 Cloth | None / Level 1 |
| Dracula Cape | 2 | 50 Cloth | Level 1 |
| Hoodie | 1 | 40 Cloth | Level 2 |
| Pants | 1 | 40 Cloth | Level 1 |
| Coffee Can Helmet | 1 | 60 Metal Fragments, 15 Cloth | Level 2 |
A full metal kit, facemask plus chest plate, is 14 sewing kits. Add a hoodie and pants underneath and you are at 16. That number is worth keeping in your head every time you open a barrel. For the full picture of what to wear, see our Rust armor guide and Rust clothing guide.
Where to Find Sewing Kits
Sewing kits come from cheap containers, which is good news early in a wipe. The odds below are the chance per container from the Facepunch wiki loot tables, so treat them as averages over many containers.
| Source | Chance | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Blue and yellow loot barrels | 8% | 3 to 4 |
| Tunnel Dwellers (train tunnels) | about 15% | 3 to 10 |
| Sunken crate | about 21% | 3 to 8 |
| Underwater advanced crate (Underwater Labs) | about 38% | 3 to 12 |
| Recycled Tactical Gloves | Guaranteed | 6 (monument recycler) |
| Recycled Jacket / Dracula Cape | Guaranteed | 1, plus a 20% chance of a 2nd |
| Recycled Hoodie or Pants | 60% | 1 |
Roadside barrels are the reliable early farm, because a single lap of the road can turn up two or three drops of 3 to 4 kits. Mid wipe, the train tunnels are better: Tunnel Dwellers drop up to 10 kits at a time. If you have a boat or a diving setup, sunken crates off the coast and the advanced crates in Underwater Labs have the best odds of any source.
The Tactical Gloves Loop
The cheapest steady way to get sewing kits is the Tactical Gloves loop. Tactical Gloves are sold at the Outpost clothing vendor for scrap, and a monument recycler breaks a pair down into 6 sewing kits plus leather. That is more kits than most barrel runs give you, for a few minutes of travel.
- Buy Tactical Gloves at the Outpost clothing vending machine.
- Carry them to a monument recycler, not the safe zone one, which gives back less.
- Use the 6 kits for your armor, or recycle some of them into rope when you need it for satchels or ladders.
Sewing Kit Recycle Value
A sewing kit recycles into cloth and rope, with no scrap. The amount depends on the recycler since the Power Trip update.
| Recycler | Cloth | Rope |
|---|---|---|
| Red, Power Plant (75%) | 15 | 2, plus a 25% chance of a 3rd |
| Green, powered (60%) | 12 | 1, plus an 80% chance of a 2nd |
| Green, Power Plant offline (50%) | 10 | 1, plus a 50% chance of a 2nd |
| Safe zone, Outpost or Bandit Camp (40%) | 8 | 1, plus a 20% chance of a 2nd |
Recycling is only worth it when you need rope more than kits, for example for satchel charges during a raid. Otherwise a sewing kit is worth far more as part of a piece of armor than as the cloth and rope inside it. Sewing kits do not give metal springs or scrap.
Rust Sewing Kit Tips
- Break every barrel. An 8% chance at 3 to 4 kits adds up fast over a road run.
- Save rope for kits. Spend it on sewing kits and satchels before ladders, barricades or fishing rods.
- Run the gloves loop. One pair of Tactical Gloves is 6 kits at a monument recycler.
- Recycle spare clothing. Jackets give a kit back every time, hoodies and pants 60% of the time.
- Plan for 14 kits. That is one Metal Facemask (6) and one Metal Chest Plate (8).
- Craft only at a Workbench 3. Until then, loot covers you, so do not hold back your armor waiting for the recipe.
Every sewing kit in your boxes resets on wipe day. Check the force wipe countdown before you hoard, and the Rust item IDs list for the sewingkit spawn name.
