Bucket Helmet Rust: Stats, Craft Cost, Bandana Combo & Insert Slots (2026)

Rust armor guide, 2026

The Bucket Helmet is the cheapest metal helmet in Rust. It costs only 20 metal fragments at a Workbench 1, with no cloth, sewing kit or high quality metal, and it blocks 50% of melee damage and 20% of bullet damage to your head. Put a bandana under it and you get 25% bullet and 60% melee for 25 materials in total, which is why it still shows up on wipe day.

This guide covers the Bucket Helmet’s craft cost and blueprint price, its exact protection stats, how it compares with the Riot Helmet, Wolf Headdress, Coffee Can and Metal Facemask, the bandana combo, armor insert slots, where to loot one, what a recycler gives back and when to replace it.

TL;DR The Bucket Helmet (bucket.helmet) crafts from 20 metal fragments at a Workbench 1 (15 seconds). Research it for 40 scrap or unlock it on the Workbench 1 tech tree after the Water Bucket. It gives 20% projectile, 50% melee, 8% bite, 6% cold and 4% radiation protection and can be repaired. Wear a bandana under it for 25% bullet / 60% melee. Crafted helmets roll 0 to 3 armor insert slots. Best loot source: supply drops (about 36%). Recycling one gives 10 frags at a monument recycler.

What Is the Bucket Helmet in Rust?

The Bucket Helmet is exactly what it sounds like: an old metal bucket turned upside down with eye holes cut into it. It is one of the oldest items in the game, added back in 2014, and its in-game description is short: “A Bucket Helmet. It provides a level of regional protection from inflicted damage.”

It sits in the outer head slot, the same layer as the Riot Helmet, Wolf Headdress, Coffee Can Helmet and Metal Facemask, so you wear one of them at a time. It leaves your face slot free, so a bandana fits under it. You can see how all the head layers fit together in our Rust armor guide.

Unlike the Riot Helmet, the bucket has Workshop skins: about 21 on the Steam Market, most selling for under a dollar and the Green Riveted Bucket Helmet near the top at around $6. Prices for every helmet skin are in our Rust outfit builder.

Its one real selling point is price. Every other metal helmet needs cloth, a sewing kit or high quality metal. The bucket needs a handful of frags you get from a few barrels.

How to Craft a Bucket Helmet in Rust

How to craft a Bucket Helmet in Rust: 20 metal fragments makes 1 Bucket Helmet at a Workbench Level 1 in 15 seconds, 7.5 at Workbench 2 and 3.75 at Workbench 3, blueprint 40 scrap
Twenty frags at a Workbench 1. That is the whole recipe.
  1. Learn the blueprint. Research a looted helmet or buy the node on the tech tree (next section).
  2. Get 20 metal fragments. Smelt about 20 metal ore, break a few barrels on the road or recycle a road sign. Our metal fragments guide lists the fastest ways.
  3. Stand at a Workbench 1. Any Workbench Level 1 or higher works. The craft takes 15 seconds at WB1, 7.5 at a Workbench 2 and 3.75 at a Workbench 3.

Older guides list 35 metal fragments. The current game files have it at 20 frags, so it is now even cheaper than it used to be.

Bucket Helmet Blueprint: Research or Tech Tree

The Bucket Helmet is not a default blueprint, so you unlock it once per wipe:

  • Research table: put a looted Bucket Helmet and 40 scrap into a research table. The helmet is used up.
  • Tech tree: on the Workbench 1 tech tree it sits right after the Water Bucket. The Water Bucket node is 1 Blueprint Fragment and the Bucket Helmet node is 30, so 45 scrap unlocks both from scratch.

Be honest with your scrap, though. For 30 scrap you can also unlock the Riot Helmet or Wolf Headdress, and both protect you better. The bucket is only worth the unlock if cloth is your bottleneck.

Bucket Helmet Protection

Rust Bucket Helmet protection stats: 50% melee, 20% projectile, 8% bite, 6% cold and 4% radiation protection on the head
Half your melee damage gone, a fifth of your bullet damage.

The Bucket Helmet gives 50% melee protection, 20% projectile, 8% bite, 6% cold and 4% radiation. All of it applies to your head only.

50% melee is enough to win a lot of spear and rock fights in the first hour of a wipe, because a bare head takes twice the damage yours does. Against a bow, crossbow or gun, 20% is the lowest of any metal helmet, so a headshot from a rifle still drops you fast. Think of it as a wipe day helmet, not a raid helmet.

Protection stacks Rust adds the protection of every piece you wear on the same body part. That is why a bandana under the Bucket Helmet pushes you to 25% bullet and 60% melee. See the Rust clothing guide for how layers work.

Bucket Helmet vs Other Rust Helmets

Bucket Helmet vs Riot Helmet, Wolf Headdress, Coffee Can Helmet and Metal Facemask in Rust: bullet and melee protection, cost or workbench level and bandana compatibility
The cheapest metal helmet, and the weakest.
HelmetBulletMeleeWorkbenchBandana under it
Bucket Helmet20%50%Workbench 1 (20 frags)Yes (25% / 60%)
Bone Helmet25%40%NoneNo
Riot Helmet25%80%Workbench 1 (50 frags + 10 cloth)Yes (30% / 90%)
Wolf Headdress30%60%Workbench 1 (wolf skull + 10 cloth)Yes (35% / 70%)
Coffee Can Helmet35%50%Workbench 2No
Metal Facemask50%70%Workbench 3No

Bucket vs Riot Helmet: the Riot Helmet is better in every stat that matters, with 5% more bullet and 30% more melee protection, for 30 more frags and 10 cloth. If you have the cloth, craft the riot.

Bucket vs Wolf Headdress: the wolf gives 10% more bullet and 10% more melee, but you need a wolf skull. If no wolves are around, the bucket is the helmet you can make right now.

Bucket vs Coffee Can and Metal Facemask: these are real upgrades that cover the face and block a bandana. Move to a Coffee Can at Workbench 2 and a Metal Facemask at Workbench 3. Full kit picks are in our Rust armor guide.

Bucket Helmet and Bandana Combo

Rust Bucket Helmet plus Bandana Mask combo: 20% plus 5% bullet and 50% plus 10% melee gives 25% bullet and 60% melee head protection for 20 metal fragments and 5 cloth
Five cloth for an extra 5% bullet and 10% melee.

A Bandana Mask costs 5 cloth, needs no workbench and adds 5% projectile and 10% melee to your head. Under a Bucket Helmet that makes 25% bullet and 60% melee for just 20 frags and 5 cloth. That is more melee protection than a Coffee Can Helmet on its own, at a fraction of the cost.

Always add the bandana when you wear a bucket. Just take it off when you upgrade to a Coffee Can or Metal Facemask, because the game won’t let you wear it with those.

Bucket Helmet Armor Insert Slots

Rust Bucket Helmet armor insert slots: crafted helmets roll 0 to 3 slots for metal, wooden, lead or asbestos inserts; looted helmets have no slots; crafting quality tea improves the roll
One of only two helmets that can roll three slots.

Since the armor inserts update, a crafted Bucket Helmet rolls a random 0 to 3 insert slots. It and the Riot Helmet are the only helmets that can roll three, while the Metal Facemask and Coffee Can roll one at most. Helmets you loot from crates or supply drops come with no slots.

That gives the bucket a niche use. Because a craft only costs 20 frags, you can craft a few, keep the one that rolls three slots and fill them with metal inserts. On a poor wipe, a three-slot bucket is a real budget stand-in for a facemask you can’t afford yet. A crafting quality tea before you craft improves your odds. Full numbers per insert are in our Rust armor inserts guide.

Where to Find a Bucket Helmet in Rust

Where to find a Bucket Helmet in Rust: supply drops about 36%, metal detector near swamps, rivers and lakes about 6%, Christmas drops about 10%, underwater crates around 1%, brown crates and scientists under 0.5%
Supply drops are the best place to loot one.
  • Supply drops: the best source by far, with about a 36% chance per drop. See our Rust airdrop guide for how to call and steal them.
  • Metal detector: around 6% per find when you sweep swamps, rivers and lakes with a metal detector.
  • Christmas drops: about 10% from Santa’s supply drop during the December event, see Rust presents.
  • Underwater advanced crates: around 1% at the Underwater Labs.
  • Brown crates and scientists: under 0.5% from normal crates and under 0.2% from scientists, so don’t farm them for it.

Honestly, a helmet that costs 20 frags isn’t worth hunting. Research the first one you find, or buy the tech tree node.

Recycling a Bucket Helmet

Recycling a Bucket Helmet in Rust: 10 metal fragments at a monument recycler, 12 grid powered, 15 at the Power Plant red recycler and 8 at a safe zone recycler
Half the frags back at a monument recycler.
RecyclerEfficiencyMetal Fragments
Monument recycler50%10
Monument, grid powered60%12
Power Plant red recycler75%15
Safe zone recycler40%8

Recycling a bucket helmet gives no scrap. Spares are better handed to a teammate or researched once. More on efficiency in our Rust recycler guide.

Rust Bucket Helmet Tips

Rust Bucket Helmet tips: always add a bandana, craft it when cloth is short, research the first one you loot, roll 3 insert slots and add metal inserts, move to the Riot Helmet next and upgrade to the Metal Facemask at Workbench 3
Small habits that get more out of the cheapest metal helmet.
  • Always add the bandana. 5 cloth for +5% bullet and +10% melee.
  • Craft it when cloth is short. On wipe day cloth goes into sleeping bags, bandages and clothing. The bucket is the only metal helmet that needs none.
  • Gear the whole group cheaply. Five buckets cost 100 frags, less than two Riot Helmets.
  • Hunt for a three-slot roll. Crafts are cheap, so keep the best roll and fill it with metal inserts.
  • Move to the Riot Helmet next. As soon as you have 10 spare cloth, the riot gives 30% more melee for the same workbench.
  • Swap on a gun wipe. Once your group farms AKs, move to a Coffee Can at WB2 and a Metal Facemask at WB3.

Planning a full set? Try our Rust outfit builder, and keep the next Rust force wipe date in mind so you know how long your kit has to last.

No workbench yet? The Snowman Helmet gives the same 20% bullet protection for 10 cloth if you own the Steam item, but it covers the whole head, so no bandana under it.

Rust Bucket Helmet FAQ

How do you craft a Bucket Helmet in Rust?

A Bucket Helmet needs 20 metal fragments at a Workbench Level 1. The craft takes 15 seconds at a Workbench 1, 7.5 at a Workbench 2 and 3.75 at a Workbench 3. You need the blueprint first.
