Road sign armor is the best armor you can craft in Rust before you have high quality metal. The set is the Road Sign Jacket, the Road Sign Kilt and the Road Sign Gloves. All three craft at a Workbench 2 from leather, road signs and sewing kits, and the jacket and kilt each block 20% of bullet damage and 25% of melee damage on top of whatever you wear underneath. Paired with a Coffee Can Helmet, it is the classic Workbench 2 PvP kit, and the kilt stays in the meta loadout all the way to endgame.
This guide covers the craft cost of every road sign piece, the blueprint price, exact protection stats, how road sign armor compares with the Metal Chest Plate and other chest pieces, the best full kits, where to get road signs, insert slots, loot sources, recycle yield and skins.

What Is Road Sign Armor in Rust?
Road sign armor is a set of three crafted pieces made from flattened road signs strapped together with leather. The jacket’s in-game description sums it up: “A shoddy piece of body armor made from roadsigns.” Shoddy or not, it is the strongest chest and leg armor you can make at a Workbench 2.
- Road Sign Jacket (
roadsign.jacket): outer chest layer. It takes the same slot as the Metal Chest Plate, the Jacket and the Snow Jacket, so you wear one of them at a time. - Road Sign Kilt (
roadsign.kilt): outer leg layer. It goes over pants and is still part of the meta kit at Workbench 3. - Road Sign Gloves (
roadsign.gloves): hands. The cheapest piece of the set and the one most players skip.
Because the jacket and kilt are outer armor layers, a hoodie and pants fit underneath and the protection stacks. How the layers fit together is explained in our Rust armor guide and the Rust clothing guide.

How to Craft Road Sign Armor in Rust
- Learn the blueprints. Research a looted piece or buy the nodes on the Workbench 2 tech tree (next section).
- Gather leather. Kill deer, boars, wolves, bears or horses and harvest the corpse. The jacket and gloves need 20 each, the kilt 10, so a full set is 50 leather.
- Collect road signs. A full set needs 4 road signs (2 for the jacket, 1 each for the kilt and gloves). See where to get road signs below.
- Make sewing kits. Each piece needs 2 sewing kits, so 6 kits for the set (20 cloth and 3 rope per kit).
- Craft at a Workbench 2. Each piece takes about 25 seconds at a Workbench 2 and less at a Workbench 3.
| Full set | Leather | Road Signs | Sewing Kits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jacket + Kilt | 30 | 3 | 4 |
| Jacket + Kilt + Gloves | 50 | 4 | 6 |
No high quality metal goes into any piece. Compare that with a Metal Facemask and Metal Chest Plate, which together need 33 HQM, 14 sewing kits and a Workbench 3.
Road Sign Armor Blueprints: Research or Tech Tree
None of the road sign pieces is a default blueprint, so you unlock each one per wipe:
- Research table: the jacket and kilt cost 30 scrap each, the gloves 20 scrap, at a research table. The item you research is used up.
- Tech tree: all three sit on the Workbench 2 tech tree at 1 Blueprint Fragment per node, plus whatever nodes are on the path.
The jacket and kilt are the two blueprints to grab first after you place a Workbench 2. They change every fight you take until your group has HQM.
Road Sign Armor Protection
The Road Sign Jacket and Kilt each give 20% projectile, 25% melee and 10% bite protection, with a -8% cold penalty. The gloves give 10% projectile and 25% melee on the hands.
On their own those numbers look modest. The trick is layering. Rust adds the protection of every piece on the same body part, so:
- Chest: hoodie (20%) + Road Sign Jacket (20%) = 40% bullet.
- Legs: pants (15%) + Road Sign Kilt (20%) = 35% bullet.
The cold penalty is the price you pay for metal on your body. In the snow biome, wear a hoodie under the jacket and keep a fire or a Snow Jacket handy.
Road Sign Jacket vs Metal Chest Plate and Other Chest Armor
| Outer chest piece | Bullet | Melee | Cold | Craft cost | Bench |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jacket | 15% | 20% | 10% | 50 cloth, 2 sewing kits | WB1 |
| Snow Jacket | 20% | 30% | 30% | 60 cloth, 1 sewing kit | WB1 |
| Road Sign Jacket | 20% | 25% | -8% | 20 leather, 2 road signs, 2 sewing kits | WB2 |
| Metal Chest Plate | 25% | 20% | -8% | 50 leather, 18 HQM, 8 sewing kits | WB3 |
| Ballistic Vest | 35% | 20% | -3% | Loot only | None |
The Road Sign Jacket gives up only 5% bullet protection against the Metal Chest Plate, and it actually has more melee protection. In exchange it costs no HQM and only 2 sewing kits instead of 8. That is why many players keep wearing the jacket well into the Workbench 3 phase and save HQM for guns.
The Snow Jacket matches its bullet protection and adds warmth for 60 cloth, so in the snow biome it is the better pick. Elsewhere, the road sign jacket’s chance at 3 insert slots and its cloth-light recipe make it the usual choice.
On the legs, the kilt has no real crafted rival. Heavy Plate Pants are tankier but loot only and slow you down, and Ballistic Leg Armour is loot only. Our pants guide compares every leg option.
Best Road Sign Armor Kits
| Kit | Pieces | Head / chest / legs bullet | HQM |
|---|---|---|---|
| Workbench 2 road sign kit | Coffee Can Helmet, Road Sign Jacket, Road Sign Kilt, hoodie, pants, boots | 35% / 40% / 35% | 0 |
| Meta kit (WB3) | Metal Facemask, Metal Chest Plate, Road Sign Kilt, hoodie, pants, boots | 50% / 45% / 35% | 33 |
| Budget WB3 kit | Metal Facemask, Road Sign Jacket, Road Sign Kilt, hoodie, pants, boots | 50% / 40% / 35% | 15 |
The Workbench 2 road sign kit is the one to aim for in the first day of a wipe. It needs no HQM, eats rifle rounds better than any cloth kit and leaves your scrap free for guns. Once you have a Workbench 3, swap the Coffee Can for a Metal Facemask first, because the head gains the most (35% to 50%). The chest plate is the last upgrade and the smallest.

Where to Get Road Signs in Rust
Road signs are a component that stacks to 20. The road sign armor set needs 4 of them, so plan one road run per set:
- Barrels along roads. The roadside loot barrels are the main source. Follow any road on the map, break every barrel and you will have a stack of road signs within a few minutes.
- Crates near roads and monuments. Basic crates also drop them, so any monument run tops you up.
- Metal detector finds along roads and rail lines can turn up components including road signs.
- Craft them. Road signs are craftable at a Workbench 3 for 20 scrap and 2 HQM, but by then you can usually afford a chest plate, so looting is almost always better.
Road signs also go into the Salvaged Cleaver (1 road sign + 50 frags), the Reinforced Wooden Shield and the Roadsign Horse Armor (4 road signs, 2 sewing kits, WB2), which makes a horse far harder to kill.
Road Sign Armor Insert Slots
Since armor inserts arrived, crafted armor rolls random insert slots. The Road Sign Jacket rolls 0 to 3 slots, which makes it a cheap 3 slot chest option. The Road Sign Kilt rolls 1 slot at most, and the gloves cannot take inserts. Looted pieces never have slots, so craft your own. A metal insert adds the most bullet protection. Drinking crafting quality tea before you craft improves your odds of more slots. Full details in our Rust armor inserts guide.
Where to Find Road Sign Armor in Rust
| Source | Chance per piece |
|---|---|
| Supply drop | About 38% (1 to 2) |
| Christmas presents (event) | About 11% |
| Locked crate (Chinook, Oil Rig, Ghost Ship) | About 1.3% |
| Elite crate | About 0.8% |
| Military crate | About 0.4% |
| Scientists | 0.1% to 0.3% |
The same odds apply to the jacket, kilt and gloves. Research the first piece you loot, then craft the rest. That is far quicker than waiting on drops.
Recycling Road Sign Armor
| Piece | Monument recycler (50%) | Safe zone recycler (40%) |
|---|---|---|
| Road Sign Jacket | 10 leather, 1 road sign, 1 sewing kit | 8 leather, 80% road sign, 80% sewing kit |
| Road Sign Kilt | 5 leather, 1 sewing kit, 50% road sign | 4 leather, 80% sewing kit, 40% road sign |
| Road Sign Gloves | 10 leather, 1 sewing kit, 50% road sign | 8 leather, 80% sewing kit, 40% road sign |
Recycling gives no scrap, so only break down spares you have already researched. The sewing kit back is the most useful part. More on efficiency in our Rust recycler guide.
Road Sign Armor Skins
The jacket and kilt are two of the most skinned items in Rust, with well over a hundred Workshop skins each (for example the Forest Raiders, Hazard Protection and Caution vests). The Knight’s Armour torso and skirt are variants of the jacket and kilt with the same recipe. Skins never change protection. Compare prices in our guide on where to buy Rust skins.
Rust Road Sign Armor Tips
- Always layer. A hoodie under the jacket and pants under the kilt turn 20% into 40% and 35%.
- Bank road signs early. Keep 4 from every road run so you can craft a set the moment your Workbench 2 goes down.
- Unlock the jacket and kilt first. 60 scrap for both is the best value on the Workbench 2 tree.
- Craft, don’t loot. Your own jacket can roll 3 insert slots. A looted one never has any.
- Upgrade the head first. At Workbench 3, the Metal Facemask is a bigger jump than the chest plate.
- Keep the kilt forever. It is part of the meta kit even at endgame, so craft a spare.

Rust Road Sign Armor FAQ
How do you craft road sign armor in Rust?
The Road Sign Jacket needs 20 leather, 2 road signs and 2 sewing kits. The Road Sign Kilt needs 10 leather, 1 road sign and 2 sewing kits. The Road Sign Gloves need 20 leather, 1 road sign and 2 sewing kits. All three craft at a Workbench Level 2.
Is road sign armor good in Rust?
Yes. It is the best armor you can craft without high quality metal. The jacket and kilt give 20% bullet and 25% melee each, and with a hoodie and pants underneath you reach 40% on the chest and 35% on the legs.
How much scrap is the road sign jacket blueprint?
The Road Sign Jacket and Road Sign Kilt cost 30 scrap each at a research table, and the Road Sign Gloves cost 20 scrap. All three are also on the Workbench 2 tech tree.
Is the Road Sign Jacket better than the Metal Chest Plate?
No for bullets, yes for value. The Metal Chest Plate gives 25% bullet against the jacket’s 20%, but it needs 18 HQM, 8 sewing kits and a Workbench 3. The road sign jacket has slightly more melee protection.
Where do you get road signs in Rust?
Break the loot barrels along roads. They are the main source. Crates and metal detector finds also give road signs, and you can craft them at a Workbench 3 for 20 scrap and 2 high quality metal.
Can you wear a hoodie under a road sign jacket?
Yes. The road sign jacket is an outer armor layer, so a hoodie, shirt or t-shirt fits underneath and the protection stacks. Hoodie plus road sign jacket gives 40% bullet protection on the chest.
How many insert slots does road sign armor have?
A crafted Road Sign Jacket rolls 0 to 3 armor insert slots, and a crafted Road Sign Kilt rolls 1 at most. The gloves cannot take inserts, and looted pieces never have slots.
What does road sign armor recycle into?
At a monument recycler, a Road Sign Jacket gives 10 leather, 1 road sign and 1 sewing kit. A kilt gives 5 leather, 1 sewing kit and a 50% chance of a road sign. No scrap comes out.
Does road sign armor slow you down?
No. Only heavy plate armor has a movement penalty. Road sign armor does lower your cold protection by 8% per piece.
