The Metal Chest Plate is the chest armor almost every geared Rust player wears. It costs 50 leather, 18 high quality metal and 8 sewing kits at a Workbench 3, it takes 25% off every bullet that hits your torso, and with a hoodie under it that number climbs to 45%.
This guide covers the metal chest plate craft cost and what is really inside those 8 sewing kits, the blueprint, its exact protection stats and cold penalty, how layering and armor inserts push it higher, how it compares with every other chest piece, where to find one, the best kit to wear it in, and what you get back from a recycler.

What Is the Metal Chest Plate in Rust?
The Metal Chest Plate (shortname metal.plate.torso) is a sheet of metal strapped over your torso with leather. It sits in the outer chest slot, the same slot as a jacket, a Snow Jacket, a Road Sign Jacket, a Dracula Cape or a Ballistic Vest, so you wear exactly one of those at a time. Under it you can still wear a shirt, a hoodie or a t-shirt, and their protection adds on top.
Together with the Metal Facemask it makes up what Rust players call “full metal”, the classic crafted fighting kit. It is not the strongest chest piece in the game, but it is the strongest one you can reliably craft, and once you have the blueprint you can replace it after every death. Our Rust armor guide shows where it fits against every other armor set.

How to Craft a Metal Chest Plate in Rust
- Learn the blueprint. Research a looted chest plate for 120 scrap, or unlock it on the Workbench 3 tech tree. The next section has the details.
- Get 18 high quality metal. Smelt HQM ore in a furnace or loot it from crates. Our high quality metal guide lists the fastest sources.
- Collect 50 leather. Harvest animals with a hatchet or knife. Bears, horses and boars give the most per kill.
- Make 8 sewing kits. Each sewing kit is 20 cloth and 3 rope at a Workbench 3, or you loot them from barrels and crates.
- Craft it at a Workbench 3. It takes about 45 seconds.
Metal Chest Plate Blueprint
The chest plate is not a default blueprint. You have two ways to learn it:
- Research table: put a looted chest plate and 120 scrap into a research table. The plate is used up, and you keep the blueprint for the rest of the wipe.
- Tech tree: unlock it on the Workbench 3 branch of the Rust tech tree. This costs scrap for every node on the path to it, so research is cheaper if you already have a plate.
Research costs were cut to 15, 30, 60 and 120 scrap by tier in November 2025, so the higher research prices in older guides are out of date.
Metal Chest Plate Protection
Armor in Rust protects only the body area it covers, so the plate does nothing for headshots or leg shots. On the torso it removes 25% of bullet damage and 20% of melee damage, plus a little bite protection against animals.
The catch is the cold. The plate has a -8% cold value, so on its own it makes you colder. In the snow biome, or at night, wear a hoodie under it, which adds 8% cold protection back and cancels the penalty out.
Layering and Armor Inserts
Rust adds the protection of every layer you wear on the same body area. That turns the plate from a decent piece into a great one:
| Chest setup | Bullet protection |
|---|---|
| Metal Chest Plate alone | 25% |
| Plate + T-Shirt | 40% |
| Plate + Hoodie | 45% |
| Plate with 3 metal inserts | 37% |
| Plate with 3 metal inserts + Hoodie | 57% |
Every crafted chest plate rolls 0 to 3 armor insert slots. Three metal inserts add up to +12% projectile protection on top of the plate. Serious crafters drink a Crafting Quality Tea, craft a few plates, keep the three slot rolls and recycle the rest. Our Rust armor inserts guide explains the slots, the tea and every insert type.
Metal Chest Plate vs Other Rust Chest Armor
| Chest piece | Bullet | Melee | Cold | How you get it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wood Chestplate | 10% | 40% | 0% | Craft, no workbench |
| Bone Armor | 25% | 40% | 0% | Craft, early game |
| Road Sign Jacket | 20% | 25% | -8% | Craft at WB2 |
| Metal Chest Plate | 25% | 20% | -8% | Craft at WB3 |
| Ballistic Vest | 35% | 20% | -3% | Loot only |
| Heavy Plate Jacket | 75% | 70% | -17% | Loot only, slows you down |
The Road Sign Jacket is the step before the plate: 5% less bullet protection, but it needs no HQM and only a Workbench 2. The Ballistic Vest from the June 2026 Built Different update beats the plate on bullets, but you cannot craft it, so you only wear it when you loot one. Heavy plate is for holding a base during a raid, not for roaming. For most fights the metal chest plate is the right pick.
Where to Find a Metal Chest Plate in Rust
| Source | Chance of a chest plate |
|---|---|
| Locked crate (Oil Rigs, Cargo Ship, Chinook drops) | About 53% |
| Elite crate (incl. Underwater Labs) | About 2% |
| Patrol helicopter crate | Under 1% |
| Heavy scientists (Oil Rigs, Bradley) | Under 1% |
A locked crate rolls a chest plate more than half the time, which makes the Oil Rigs, the Cargo Ship and Chinook drops at monuments the places to farm one. The odds in elite and military crates are low, so do not count on them. Once you loot one plate, research it straight away so a death never costs you the recipe.
Best Metal Chest Plate Kit
The standard crafted PvP kit around the chest plate is:
- Head: Metal Facemask (50% bullet). A Coffee Can Helmet is the cheaper option before Workbench 3.
- Chest: Metal Chest Plate over a hoodie (45% bullet).
- Legs: Road Sign Kilt over pants.
- Hands and feet: Roadsign or tactical gloves and boots.
A full metal set, facemask plus chest plate, is 14 sewing kits, so stock up on cloth and rope before you start crafting kits for a group. The Rust clothing guide covers which soft layer goes where.
Recycling a Metal Chest Plate
A damaged or low-slot plate is worth recycling. At a monument recycler one chest plate returns 30 leather, 10 HQM and 4 sewing kits. A safe zone recycler at Outpost or Bandit Camp returns less, about 20 leather, 7 HQM and 3 sewing kits. Getting half the sewing kits back is the main reason to recycle instead of repairing a badly worn plate.
Rust Metal Chest Plate Tips
- Never wear it bare. A hoodie under it takes you from 25% to 45% and fixes the cold penalty.
- Research the first one. 120 scrap keeps the blueprint for the whole wipe.
- Roll for slots. A three slot plate with metal inserts reaches 37% on its own.
- Stock sewing kits. Each plate needs 8, which is where most crafting stalls.
- Not with a hazmat. The Hazmat Suit and other full-body suits fill every slot, so swap back to the plate after a radiation run.
- Skins are cosmetic. Skinned chest plates, like the ones in the Rust item store or past Twitch drops, have the same stats. Browse more in our Rust skins guide.
- Remember the wipe. Your armor and usually your blueprints go when the server resets. Check when the next force wipe is.
Rust Metal Chest Plate FAQ
How do you craft a metal chest plate in Rust?
Craft it from 50 leather, 18 high quality metal and 8 sewing kits at a Workbench 3. You need the blueprint first, from a research table or the Workbench 3 tech tree.
How much does it cost to research a metal chest plate?
Researching a metal chest plate costs 120 scrap and one chest plate at a research table. You can also unlock it on the Workbench 3 tech tree.
How much protection does a metal chest plate give in Rust?
The Metal Chest Plate gives 25% projectile, 20% melee and 3% bite protection to the torso, with a -8% cold penalty. With a hoodie under it you get 45% bullet protection on the chest.
Can you wear a hoodie under a metal chest plate?
Yes. The hoodie is an under-layer and the chest plate is an outer layer, so you can wear both and their protection stacks to 45% bullet protection on the chest.
Can you wear a jacket with a metal chest plate?
No. The jacket, snow jacket, road sign jacket, Dracula cape, ballistic vest and metal chest plate all use the outer chest slot, so you can wear only one of them.
Where do you find a metal chest plate in Rust?
The best source is a locked crate, which has about a 53% chance of a chest plate. Locked crates appear on the Oil Rigs, the Cargo Ship and in Chinook drops. Elite crates and heavy scientists drop them only rarely.
Is the ballistic vest better than the metal chest plate?
On bullets, yes: the Ballistic Vest gives 35% projectile protection against the plate’s 25%. But the vest is loot only, so the metal chest plate is the best chest armor you can craft every wipe.
What do you get from recycling a metal chest plate?
A monument recycler returns 30 leather, 10 high quality metal and 4 sewing kits. A safe zone recycler returns about 20 leather, 7 HQM and 3 sewing kits.

A crafted metal chest plate rolls 0 to 3 armor insert slots. Three metal inserts add up to 12% projectile protection, taking the plate to 37% on its own.
What is the metal chest plate item ID in Rust?
The Metal Chest Plate uses the shortname metal.plate.torso and the item ID 1110385766.
