Radiation in Rust is the invisible tax on the best loot. The rooms with elite crates, red card puzzles and the Bradley APC all sit inside radiation zones, and every one of them asks for a specific amount of radiation protection. Bring that number and you take zero rads. Bring less and the gap leaks into your rad meter, which keeps draining your health long after you walk out.
This guide gives you the exact radiation level of every monument (median and max, from data verified on November 5, 2026), how protection actually works, the cheapest outfit that covers each zone, what every clothing piece adds, how to cure radiation poisoning, and which monuments you can loot with no protection at all.

Rust Radiation Levels by Monument
Every number below is the radiation protection you need to take zero rads in that part of the monument. Median is what most of the monument runs at, the open ground you walk through. Max is the hottest room, usually the one behind the keycard door. The figures come from RustHelp’s monument data, which was last verified against the live game on November 5, 2026, the same day as the November 2026 update.
| Monument | Median | Max | Level | What to wear |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nuclear Missile Silo | 26 | 81 | Extreme | Hazmat plus 2 or more pills; nothing blocks the level 5 cavern |
| Launch Site | 11 | 52 | High | Hazmat for the red card rooms, pill on the way out |
| Power Plant | 0 | 52 | High | Anything in the yard, hazmat for the sealed rooms |
| Underwater Lab | 0 | 52 | High | Diving gear, then hazmat or pills for red card and plant rooms |
| Military Tunnels | 11 | 26 | Medium | Hazmat, or a hoodie kit with a Snow Jacket |
| Train Yard | 11 | 26 | Medium | Hazmat, or a hoodie kit with a Snow Jacket |
| Water Treatment Plant | 0 | 26 | Medium | Nothing outside, 26 protection for the interior |
| Radtown | 0 | 26 | Medium | Clothes on the road, 26 protection for the buildings |
| Airfield | 11 | 11 | Low | Burlap set or any clothing kit |
| Giant Excavator Pit | 11 | 11 | Low | Burlap set or any clothing kit |
| Satellite Dish | 3 | 11 | Low | Burlap set or any clothing kit |
| Sewer Branch | 3 | 11 | Low | Burlap set or any clothing kit |
| Arctic Research Base | 3 | 11 | Low | Snow Jacket kit (it also fixes the cold) |
| The Dome | 0 | 11 | Low | Burlap set or any clothing kit |
Two things stand out. First, a lot of monuments are milder than their reputation: the Airfield, Satellite Dish, Sewer Branch and the Dome never go above 11, so a wipe day burlap set covers them. Second, the High rooms all sit at exactly 52, which is 2 more than a Hazmat Suit gives, and the Missile Silo is in a league of its own at 81. For crates, puzzles and scientists at each site, see our full Rust monuments guide.
How Radiation Protection Works in Rust
Radiation zones are invisible spheres placed around and inside a monument, and each one has a level. Your radiation protection is the sum of the Radiation stat on everything you wear, and each 1% on an item card counts as one point. Inside a zone, the game subtracts your protection from the zone level. If the result is zero or less, you take nothing. If it is above zero, that leftover builds up on your rad meter.
A worked example: the deep rooms at Military Tunnels are level 26. A normal PvP base layer of hoodie, pants, boots, tactical gloves and bandana gives 21, so 5 leaks through. Throw a Snow Jacket over the hoodie and you are at 41, and the tunnels stop hurting completely. That is why “how much radiation protection do I need” always has a precise answer in Rust: the max number for the room you are going into.
The Cheapest Outfit for Each Radiation Level
You do not need a Hazmat Suit for most monuments. We added up the radiation stat of common clothing to find the cheapest kit that clears each level (item values below, the same ones on our Rust clothing guide).
| Outfit | Radiation protection | Clears | Leaks in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nothing | 0 | Rad-free monuments | Everything else |
| Burlap headwrap, shirt, trousers, gloves + Boots | 12 | Low (11) | Medium: 14, High: 40 |
| Hoodie, Pants, Boots, Tactical Gloves, Bandana | 21 | Low (11) | Medium: 5, High: 31 |
| Arctic Suit | 33 | Medium (26) | High: 19 |
| The 21 kit + Snow Jacket | 41 | Medium (26) | High: 11 |
| Hazmat Suit or Heavy Scientist Suit | 50 | Medium (26) | High: 2, Silo peak: 31 |
The Snow Jacket kit is the sleeper pick. It clears every Medium zone, so you can run Military Tunnels, Train Yard and Water Treatment in a kit that still has real bullet protection, instead of the Hazmat Suit’s 30%. Wearing it on top of the hoodie also stops you freezing at the Arctic Research Base.
Radiation Protection per Item
| Item | Slot | Radiation | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hazmat Suit | Full body | 50 | Workbench 2; only 30% bullet and melee |
| Heavy Scientist Suit | Full body | 50 | Loot only; adds 100% explosion protection |
| Arctic Suit | Full body | 33 | Rust Store item; 33% cold too |
| Snow Jacket | Chest (outer) | 20 | Most of any normal clothing |
| Shirt | Chest | 6 | Best basic chest piece for rads |
| Hoodie, Longsleeve, Jacket, BDU Shirt | Chest | 5 | |
| Pants, BDU Pants | Legs | 5 | |
| Tactical Gloves | Hands | 5 | Leather Gloves give 4 |
| Lead Armor Insert | Armor slot | +5 | Per insert on crafted armor |
| Frog Boots | Feet | 5 | Twitch drop item |
| Boots, Bandana, T-Shirt, Hide Vest | Various | 3 | |
| Burlap Shirt, Trousers, Headwrap | Various | 2 | Burlap Gloves give 3 |
Armor helps a little too: metal and road sign pieces carry small radiation values, and every Lead Armor Insert adds 5. That is the way to keep a fighting kit and still shrug off mild zones, but it never gets close to the Hazmat Suit for High rooms.
Is a Hazmat Suit Enough?
For almost everything, yes. The Hazmat Suit gives 50 radiation protection, the most of any single item, and it fully covers every Low and Medium zone in the game. It falls short in four places:
- Launch Site red card rooms (52): 2 rads leak through, which is slow but adds up over a long loot.
- Power Plant sealed rooms (52): the same 2 rad leak.
- Underwater Lab hot rooms (52): red card rooms, plant rooms and the glowing barrels.
- Missile Silo (81): 31 rads leak in the hottest cavern, so a suit alone will not save you. Bring pills.
The answer in all four is the same: wear the suit, move with purpose, and take an Anti-Radiation Pill as you leave. A hazmat skin never changes the numbers, every skin has the same stats as the base suit.
How Radiation Poisoning Works
Radiation does not hit your health directly. Rads that leak past your protection fill a separate radiation poisoning meter, shown as a radiation icon with a number beside your health. While that number is high, it drains your health over time. It falls slowly on its own, so a small dose from a Low zone fades without you noticing.
The catch that kills people: the poisoning keeps draining after you leave the zone. Players finish a Launch Site run with full health, walk away, and die on the road home. If the number is climbing while you loot, deal with it before you leave, not after. The Geiger Counter that road scientists carry clicks faster as rads rise, but the meter by your health is all you really need.
How to Get Rid of Radiation in Rust
| Item | Radiation removed | How to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Anti-Radiation Pills | 75 over 5 seconds (costs 5 hydration) | Loot only: Jungle Crates, trash piles, food crates; stacks to 10 |
| Jar of Honey | 15 | Beehives; also 50 calories |
| Medical Syringe | 10 | Workbench 2 craft; also heals 35 HP |
| Rad. Removal Tea (basic, advanced, pure) | Small amounts | Mixing Table teas; better as a top-up than a cure |
Pills are the real answer. One clears a full High room dose, they stack to 10 and weigh nothing, and they are common in roadside loot. A syringe fixes small doses while healing you, which makes it the best item to jab mid-fight in a rad room.
Monuments With No Radiation
These monuments have 0 median and 0 max radiation, so you can loot them naked on wipe day: Harbor (large and small), Junkyard, Outpost, Bandit Camp, Ferry Terminal, Abandoned Military Base, Oxum’s Gas Station, the Abandoned Supermarket, Mining Outpost, Lighthouse, Apartment Complex, Abandoned Cabins and the Jungle Ziggurat.
The oil rigs are rad-free during a normal run too. They only switch on anti-camping radiation after the locked crate has been hacked and looted, to push players off the platform.
Radiation Tips
- Check the max, not the median. The table’s max column is the room you are actually going into.
- Always carry 2 pills. They cost nothing to hold and turn a lethal dose into nothing.
- Use the Snow Jacket kit for Medium monuments. 41 protection clears 26 without giving up your bullet protection.
- Hazmat for 52, plus a pill on exit. The 2 rad leak is small, but it adds up during a long puzzle.
- Be fast in the Silo cavern. At 81, nothing you can wear stops it. Get in, get the loot, take pills.
- Leave early, not late. Poisoning keeps draining after you exit, so stop looting while your health still has room.
Radiation, blueprints and every monument reset with the map. Check when your server’s next Rust force wipe is before you plan a big run.
Rust Radiation FAQ
How much radiation protection do I need in Rust?
As much as the zone’s level: 11 for Low zones (Airfield, Satellite Dish, Sewer Branch, the Dome), 26 for Medium zones (Military Tunnels, Train Yard, Water Treatment, Radtown), 52 for High rooms (Launch Site, Power Plant, Underwater Labs) and 81 for the Missile Silo’s hottest cavern. If your protection matches the level, you take zero rads.
Which Rust monument has the most radiation?
The Nuclear Missile Silo. It runs a median of 26 and peaks at 81 in its deepest cavern, which is more than any outfit can block. Launch Site, Power Plant and the Underwater Labs come next with peaks of 52.
Is a Hazmat Suit enough for Launch Site?
Almost. The Hazmat Suit gives 50 radiation protection and the Launch Site red card rooms are level 52, so 2 rads leak through. That is slow, so a suit plus one Anti-Radiation Pill on the way out covers a full run.
How much radiation does Military Tunnels have?
A median of 11 and a max of 26. A Hazmat Suit covers it fully, and so does a hoodie, pants, boots, tactical gloves and bandana with a Snow Jacket on top, which gives 41 protection.
How do you get rid of radiation poisoning in Rust?
Take Anti-Radiation Pills, which remove 75 radiation over 5 seconds for 5 hydration. A Jar of Honey removes 15 and a Medical Syringe removes 10. Radiation poisoning also falls slowly on its own once you are out of the zone.
Does radiation keep hurting you after you leave a zone?
Yes. Radiation poisoning stays on your meter and keeps draining health until it falls, so take a pill as you leave a high radiation room instead of waiting until you get home.
What clothing gives the most radiation protection in Rust?
The Hazmat Suit and Heavy Scientist Suit give 50, the Arctic Suit gives 33, and the Snow Jacket gives 20, the most of any normal clothing piece. A Lead Armor Insert adds 5 per slot on crafted armor.
Which monuments have no radiation in Rust?
Harbor, Junkyard, Outpost, Bandit Camp, Ferry Terminal, Abandoned Military Base, Oxum’s Gas Station, Abandoned Supermarket, Mining Outpost, Lighthouse, Apartment Complex, Abandoned Cabins, the Jungle Ziggurat and both oil rigs (until the anti-camp radiation after a hacked crate is looted).
Do hazmat skins give more radiation protection?
No. A skin only changes how the suit looks; every Hazmat Suit skin has the same 50 radiation protection. The Arctic Suit and Heavy Scientist Suit are separate items with their own stats.
