Join any Rust server and you will hear it within five minutes: “zerg on the hill”, “grub at the recycler”, “he’s softsiding our compound”, “bring sulf, we’re offlining tonight”. Rust has its own language, built from item short names, monument nicknames and a decade of server chat.
This Rust slang glossary explains it all in plain English: what zerg, grub, chad and nakeds mean, base words like TC, softside, honeycomb and airlock, raid words like offline and eco raid, resource and weapon nicknames, monument abbreviations, server and wipe terms, and the quick chat calls teams use in a fight. If you only learn one word, make it wipe: our Rust force wipe countdown tells you exactly when the next one lands.

The 10 Rust Terms Every New Player Needs
Start here. These ten come up in every game, on every server, from the first minute on the beach.
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| TC | The Tool Cupboard. It stops other players building near your base and holds the resources that pay your upkeep. “Auth on the TC” means add yourself to it. |
| BP | A blueprint. Learning the BP of an item lets you craft it. “BP’d” means you know it. See Rust blueprints. |
| Wipe | A server reset. A map wipe deletes every base, a BP wipe also deletes what you have learned. |
| Nakeds / nakey | Fresh spawns with only a rock and a torch. “Just a naked” means not a threat (usually). |
| Zerg | A very large group that wins by numbers. “Zerg server” = no group limit. |
| Offline | Raiding a base while its owners are logged off. The opposite is an online. |
| Softside | The weak, textured face of a wall that tools break fast. “They softsided us” = they got in with tools, not explosives. |
| Sulf | Sulfur, the main cost of every explosive. “How much sulf?” means “what does this raid cost?” |
| Kit / kitted | A full set of armour and a gun. “He’s kitted” = he has real gear. |
| Pop | Server population: how many players are online right now. |
Rust Base Building Slang
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Auth / authed | Being authorized on a TC, turret or code lock. Teammates are not authed automatically, see Rust clans and teams. |
| Core | The middle of the base where the TC and the main loot sit. |
| Loot room | The room full of boxes. Raiders go straight for it. |
| Honeycomb | Extra rings of walls and triangle foundations around the core so raiders have to blow through more layers. |
| Airlock | Two doors in a row with a small space between. Shut the first before you open the second so nobody can push in behind you. |
| Softside / hardside | Every wall has a weak side (softside) and a strong side. Wood softside falls to about 2 hatchets, stone to about 7 pickaxes, see wood walls and stone walls. Always face the strong side out. |
| Compound | A yard around the base made of high external walls, often with farms and a car lift inside. |
| External TC | A second cupboard outside the main base to block other players building right next to you. |
| Bunker | A base whose entrance is sealed with a building trick so raiders cannot walk in through the door. See Rust bunkers. |
| Starter / 2×1 / 2×2 | Small first bases named by their foundation footprint. See base designs. |
| Peeks / shooting floor | Windows and embrasures on the roof or top floor used to shoot at raiders. |
| Twig / wood / stone / sheet / HQM | The five building grades, from twig up to armored. “Upgrade to stone” is the first thing most groups do. |
| Decay / upkeep | Bases lose health unless the TC holds enough resources. Groups of 5+ authed players pay more since September 2026, see the upkeep calculator. |
| Trap base | A base built to lure players in and kill them with shotgun traps, turrets or a fake door. |
| T1 / T2 / T3 | Workbench levels 1, 2 and 3. “We need a T2” = we need a Workbench Level 2. |
Rust Raiding Slang
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Offline (offlining) | Raiding while the owners are asleep or logged off. Cheap and safe, and the most common kind of raid. |
| Online | Raiding while the owners are on and shooting back. Expensive and loud. |
| Eco raid | Breaking in without rockets or C4: melee on softsides, fire, shotguns on doors, beancans. Our eco raid calculator shows the cost. |
| Counter raid | Waiting for raiders to spend their boom, then killing them and taking it. |
| Boom | Any explosives. “How much boom do we have?” |
| C4 | The Timed Explosive Charge, the strongest raid tool for its size. |
| Satch / satchels | Satchel charges: cheap, crafted early, sometimes dud. |
| Rockets / HVs | Rockets fired from the Rocket Launcher. HVs are the fast, low damage HV rockets used against players. |
| Explo | Explosive 5.56 ammo, shot into walls to finish them off. |
| Beancan | The Beancan Grenade, the cheapest boom in the game. |
| Raid cost | How much sulfur a wall or door takes. See the raid calculator and raid chart. |
| Door camping | Waiting outside someone’s door to kill them the moment they step out. |
| Roof camping | Sitting on a roof, often your own, to shoot anyone who walks past. |
| Despawn | Dropped loot disappearing after a while. “Grab it before it despawns.” |
| Raid base | A small, quick base built next to a target to store boom and respawn during the raid. |
| ORP | Offline raid protection, a plugin on some modded servers that makes offline bases harder to raid. |
Rust Player Slang: Zerg, Grub, Chad and More
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Zerg | A huge group, often 8 or more, that overwhelms everyone through numbers. Borrowed from StarCraft. |
| Grub | A low-geared player who plays dirty: third-partying fights, stealing kills, looting bodies, hitting the recycler. Used as an insult and, sometimes, a proud playstyle. |
| Chad | A confident, fully geared fighter, usually in a metal facemask and chest plate with an AK. |
| Naked / fresh spawn | A player who just spawned or respawned with nothing. |
| Roamer / roam | A player or group running the map hunting fights. “Let’s roam” = go look for kills. |
| Rat / ratting | Sneaking, hiding and looting quietly instead of fighting. |
| Solo / duo / trio / quad | Group sizes of 1, 2, 3 and 4. Many servers cap groups at one of these. |
| Sleeper | The body of a logged-off player. Killing a sleeper can loot everything they carry. |
| Friendly | A player who says they will not shoot. Rust’s oldest lie. |
| KOS | Kill on sight. Shoot first, never trust “friendly”. |
| Neighbour | The base next door. Could be a friend, could be your next raid. |
| Main / alt | A player’s main account and a second account, often used to scout or to get round a group limit (against the rules on most servers). |
| Cheater / blatant / closet | A hacker; “blatant” is obvious, “closet” hides it. See Rust cheats and anti-cheat. |
Rust Resource and Item Slang
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| HQM | High quality metal, used for top tier gear and armored walls. |
| Frags | Metal fragments, the most used metal. |
| Sulf / sulf ore | Sulfur and sulfur ore. Smelts 1:1 in a furnace. |
| LGF | Low grade fuel: furnaces, lights, vehicles and explosives. |
| GP | Gunpowder, made from sulfur and charcoal. |
| Comps | Components like gears, springs, pipes and tech trash. “Recycle the comps.” |
| Scrap | Rust’s currency: research, the tech tree and the Outpost shops. See scrap. |
| Node / farm | An ore rock, and gathering resources from them. “Farm stone” means go hit nodes. |
| Res | Resources in general. “Drop the res in the TC.” |
| Stack | A full slot of an item, for example 1,000 wood. |
| Meds / syringes / bandies | Healing items: med kits, syringes and bandages. |
| Cards / keycards | The green, blue and red keycards that open monument puzzles. |
| Elite / mil / locked | Elite crates, military crates and the locked crate. |
| Drop | An airdrop, usually from a supply signal. |

| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Force wipe | The forced monthly map wipe when Facepunch ships the update, on the first Thursday of every month. Track it on the force wipe countdown. |

Rust Slang FAQ
What does zerg mean in Rust?
A zerg is a very large group of players, often 8 or more, that wins fights and raids by numbers rather than skill. The word comes from the swarming Zerg race in StarCraft. A zerg server is one with no group limit.
What is a grub in Rust?
A grub is a low-geared player who plays dirty, such as third-partying fights, stealing kills, looting other people’s bodies or camping the recycler. It is mostly used as an insult, but some players call themselves grubs on purpose.
What does chad mean in Rust?
A chad is a confident, fully geared fighter, usually in a metal facemask and chest plate with an AK, who pushes fights instead of hiding. It is the opposite of a grub or a naked.
What does TC mean in Rust?
TC means Tool Cupboard. It stops other players building near your base, lets authorized players build and upgrade, and holds the resources that pay your base’s upkeep.
What does BP mean in Rust?
BP means blueprint. Learning an item’s blueprint, through research, the tech tree or a blueprint fragment unlock, lets you craft that item. A BP wipe resets every blueprint you have learned.
What is an offline raid in Rust?
An offline raid, or offline, is raiding a base while its owners are logged off and cannot defend it. An online raid is the opposite, raiding while the owners are on the server and fighting back.
What does softside mean in Rust?
The softside is the weaker side of a wall, the side that shows the frame and supports. Tools and melee break it much faster than the strong side, so walls should always face their strong side outward. Softsiding means breaking in through softsides without explosives.
What do HQM, LGF and sulf mean in Rust?
HQM is high quality metal, LGF is low grade fuel and sulf is sulfur. Frags are metal fragments, comps are components and GP is gunpowder.
What does KOS mean in Rust?
KOS means kill on sight: shoot any player you see without talking first. Many players play KOS because “friendly” players often turn on you.
